CoachRich
Interesting article in todays The Province's Back of the Net - http://communities.canada.com/theprovince/blogs/backofthenet/archive/2009/03/22/what-s-in-a-name.aspx Wha's in a name? By Marc Weber 03-22-2009 Back of the Net To almost comical proportions, members of our local media (on behalf of members of our local community) have been losing their marbles at the thought of "Whitecaps" being banished from the face of the Earth. First off, it's not happening people! No one ever said it was going anywhere! Stop worrying! (Insert "Dr. Stranglelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Whitecaps" joke here). Listen. Bobby loves it. The team loves it. The fans love it. It's not going anywhere. The point of "Vancouver 2011", which I'll make again, is twofold: 1. It distinguishes this marketing campaign from the Whitecaps' USL one (as if the full-page newspaper ads and banner ads on TSN.ca etc., didn't do that). 2. It gives the team the chance to tell YOU, the fans, that you have a voice in this matter. And then you feel all warm and fuzzy when you were part of keeping the name Whitecaps. HOWEVER, I do have a point here. I love "Whitecaps" too. Honest. But, I'm not convinced it needs to the be the primary reference for the team. I mean Gunners is pretty cool, but how often do you use it when refering to Arsenal? Either way it's usually preceeded by a cuss word, I know. Full credit to my friend Jake Steele on this one (yes, his real name; no, not friends with Max Power). Jake is a Vancouverite lost in Toronto right now, but soon to be returning home and has already put his deposit down for Caps' seasons. That gives him a voice in my book. Jake's point is simple: Chanting TFC is cool. Chanting Whitecaps, or Go Whitecaps or Let's Go Whitecaps, is kinda cumbersome and kinda hockey like. I do like that one clapping routine that ends with a "Whitecaps" yell, but otherwise tend to agree with him. There's a ton of history and pride in the name worth preserving, but maybe — just maybe — it's not the best everyday name for the club. His thought: What about VFC? Would it fly? Keep Whitecaps but go by Vancouver FC as first reference? What I like about VFC: 1. It's like TFC but better and will piss off Toronto folks who think they cornered the market 2. It's easy to chant 3. The V is a very versatile weapon. Fans can en masse claim victory, or, in a nod to our British forefathers, tell the opposition they're absolute Horst Hrubesch. Fans can plead for peace when the situation requires, and really wacko fans in behind the goal can wear those Guy Fawkes masks from V for Vendetta to creep out the visiting keeper. This is all just off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure the possibilities are limitless. Voluminous even. VFC, VFC, VFC, VFC. Am I way off here? Calgary Boomer
You're forgetting about WHITE - CAPS from one side of the stadium to the other. The best, most simple cheer EVER!
AlanDouglas
Abbreviation-mania is spreading. Honestly, why don't we just name every team after the three-letter code for their city's airport? Vancouver would be YVR, Toronto would be YYZ (or YTO), the Galaxy would be LAX (which is oddly appropriate), etc. Also, ditto what Boomer said. The best, most simple cheer EVER! I was going to mention the same thing. It's going to be great to hear that one done full force again. Don't know who this Marc Weber guy his but he sounds like a turd....and chanting TFC or in this case VFC, just sounds a lot like the boring U-S-A chant. The best, most simple cheer EVER! Keep the name. However i am not opposed to VFC as well as i like to align with a euro style name. Whitecaps on the flipside is the best nic name in history and as it is so well represented i think it wouldn't be lost at all if the name were to change to VFC Lose the cheer. It sounds like a bad green day concert or like someone is trying to drop a deuce and is screaming white - caps to help himself along. SthMelbRed
Euro style name, you say? Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Blackburn Rovers Football Club, Bolton Wanderers Football Club, West Bromwich Albion Football Club, Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, Kickers Offenbach Football Club, Go Ahead Eagles, Vancouver Whitecaps Football Club.....you're right, this North Americanisation of the game must stop. It's pure evil.
