Calgary Boomer
I must say...Kevin Calabro is one of the best basketball announcers of all time. His voice is so deep, my cat started purring when the game was on. But he's got a LONG way to go before he gets the terms and "feel" of the game down. Knobbs
The Sounders looked pretty good, but I don't know if it's because they are that great or because the Red Bulls sucked that badly (they really sucked that game. I think Drew Carey could have came on and ran circles around the NY backline) Montero was all over the place and Seattle's passing was crisp.... Didn't really notice Tyrone Marshall do anything worthwhile, but really, who ever notices Tyrone Marshall do anything worthwhile for his team? ag futbol
Hurtado was pretty good for Seattle i thought. Angel is not an easy customer to deal with but they completely isolated him up top. He also muscled several guys off the ball and made some key challenges. Story of the game is Montero though, without a doubt.

Cheeta
quote:Originally posted by Rudi Highlights Oh, boy. Some great movements by Seattle but New York's defending on a couple of those goals. Ug. New York has some hard work ahead of them. Montero is going to score some goals this year if he can stay healthy and enthusiastic. No doubt about it. Andrew W
If Montero and Jaqua do that up top all year and Nyassi and Le Toux have time to move the ball, this team could be tough. Jaqua made so much room for Montero by holding the ball up and pressuring defenders. He didn't get a lot of love on the score sheet, but I thought he made it so they couldn't surround or double up Montero. BTW, that kid is a quality player, which is huge for an expansion team. To have a striker and goalkeeper like that is a great start for them. I don't think they have quality in defence, just some solidity.
ottawaguy2009
THAT WAS AN AMAZING GAME! I only watched the highlights but damn. Those fans. They give TFC supporters a run for their money! I predict Seattle goes to the final 4 in this year's playoffs atleast. Not only that, but that Montero, man he has some good pace and ball control. I figure he breaks into the top 3 for the Golden Boot this season. I wish I would have chosen him for my fantasy team...will have to make a trade. Free kick
Notice how nice those highlights look on TV? It looks really professional and if anyone around the world were watching those highlights, the reputation of the league not be diminished. It has to do with position of the cameras (high angle) and the back drop of the Stadium. Which all brings me back to that debate about Stade Saputo that we were having last fall. This is what i ( and a few others like Grizzly) were getting at when arguing that Saputo stadium is not sufficient for what MLS needs and wants. It validates Garber's concerns and why a lot of money would have been needed to upgrade it or that, perhaps, it should not have been built at all under the current plans. If you were to watch similar highlights at Saputo, you would probably note the low position of the cameras ( because there is no upper deck to the stands) and you would see open space in the corners showing the park, trees, Hot dog stands etc.. Similar highlights at Saputo might conjure up images of USL soccer and perhaps a Concacaf qualifying match involving Surinam and Belize. If you are trying to position and portray your product in that way then Saputo will do. But if you are trying to lure better Int'l players, more sponsors and grow the league, then a facility like saputo ( as it currently stands) does nothing for you. Image and perception counts for a lot.
squizz1402635577
^ Very good points. When watching the highlights for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised by how damned good Qwest Field looked, both in terms of the physical appearance of the stadium and the enthusiasm of the fans. Calgary Boomer
Qwest was built by Paul Allen with Soccer in mind from the get-go. They moved the seats as CLOSE as legally (NFL) possible. The upper stands are STEEP allowing an intimate atmosphere. But man, you can't build fans. It's as if the team was around for 100 years. And anybody who thought Adrian Hanauer was just a small fish in the ownership group...he was the one who found Le Toux and Montero. Seattle's making the playoffs and making a splash. Daniel
That first goal should have been called offside. The forward was too close to the shot to be deemed not interfering with the play.

Vancouversoccerman
Excellent, awesome night at Qwest Field. It had great atmosphere, and knowledgeable fans. Lots of fans recognized our new Southsider scarves, and they can't wait to get the whole Cascadia rivalries up and running again! I took a few snapshots...enjoy! http://www.flickr.com/photos/36541668@N07/sets/72157615686498710/
Tuscan
Wow... looks like it was a hell of a game, and atmosphere to boot! I certainly hope Seattle doesn't fall victim to post-opening game blues, where half the fans from the opening game don't bother to keep coming back. What was your general impression of the crowd type that was there? Are they likely to keep coming out in force?
Regs
It would be hard for them to lose half the fans from opening night since 22,000 of them are season ticket holders and capacity for the rest of the season is 26,

Didn't really notice Tyrone Marshall do anything worthwhile, but really, who ever notices Tyrone Marshall do anything worthwhile for his team? Marshall may be an improved player this year because unlike in previous seasons he'll have Casey Keller behind him to tell him what to do & to organize the defense. And yes, the stadium looked & sounded fantastic but I too think the first goal could have been called back on offside. I'm not sure what that striker was doing running in on goal like that while his teammate took the shot but he got away with it, maybe he knew that Seattle would be likely to get the calls for this match. CanadianSoccerFan
Seattle players and management were mentioning in weeks prior that the FieldTurf at Qwest plays far better than any other artificial surface in the league including Toronto. I have to say after watching the game the ball appears to move and react much like on grass. Wasn't a lighting quick skating rink like BMO and the Meadowlands. MM2
quote:Originally posted by Daniel That first goal should have been called offside. The forward was too close to the shot to be deemed not interfering with the play. I thought that at first, but I reviewed the replay several times and 1. The player (Nyassi?)was definitely in an offside position. Nothing wrong with that. 2. To be called offside he would have to: A. Touch or play the ball (interfering in play) -he didn't B. Obstruct the view of the goalie (interfering with an opponent) and "in the opinion of the referee/AR" he wasn't. You'll notice that Nyassi made his run from the opposite angle to the shot and wasn't interfering with the goalie's sight line. Therefore the AR made the right call. No offside. Seattle has a great soccer culture, and the MLS Sounders have done a lot of things differently (and right). The concept of having Season Ticket holders as active "Members of the Alliance" gave the Sounders management instant feedback and ideas on how to make Qwest friendly to soccer fans. One thing I thought was cool was the way ALL fans in the lower tier stood for the entire game...not just the ones in the end zones. I don't know if the marching band in the end zone's going to last, but they were good for the most part about not playing during the run of play. I think Seattle's support is just going to grow over time as people come to check it out just to see what the party's about. And what they build is going to be unique from other cities in MLS. I think it's something that's going to evolve more over time.
