Gian-Luca
http://my.thescore.com/footyblog/archive/2009/03/18/12271.aspx Or should I say "Vancouver MLS team" rather than "Whitecaps"....

Gian-Luca
http://communities.canada.com/theprovince/blogs/backofthenet/archive/2009/03/18/vancouver-officially-in-mls-by-2011.aspx Of note: "The Whitecaps did not come to an agreement on player development with the league so those talks continue. MLS values what Vancouver has done with its residency program and will want to encourage that model somewhat, without pissing off its existing teams. Right now players have to declare for the draft and the Whitecaps would get no compensation for bringing them along."
bettermirror
How absolutely ridiculous is that eh!?!?!?! Why would that piss off other teams? Frankly, they should have been doing this from day 1!!! Bloody Americans and their draft.
Andrew W
Actually, this is starting to change. Houston just signed a player out of their youth development system. I think by the time the Caps enter the league, this issue will be fixing itself. Obviously, it's not a deal breaker at this point.
Gian-Luca
http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/2009/03/18/vancouver_mls_2011/ And according to the CP, the team might not be called the Whitecaps. I can't really see the argument for changing the name, personally.

Andrew W
Lenarduzzi couldn't guarantee the team will keep the Whitecaps name once it joins MLS. "There is a lot of things we need to make decisions on," he said. "The Whitecaps name has a lot of equity. There may be people out there that think it may need to be something other than that." That's the quote. I personally think that's politico-speak where you're making nice-nice (or maybe I just hope so). If they think the brand is wrapped up in the USL team they only need look directly south to realize that the product will elevate the name (if that's a concern). My only other thought is if they have to, for any reason, separate the current organization from the MLS team to protect the academy set up which is all under Whitecaps FC. I'm just waxing poetic, but you never know. I normally don't get too bent about it, but they sure didn't divorce themselves from the Whitecaps name through the presentation. I hope they keep it because it's the name that introduced me to the game as a kid.

The only things we know is that they agree on a maximum($35M) to join the MLS in 2011? The took a position. Again, i'm not seing a firm deal here? Nice press conference BTW

Grandstander
Also as suggested in earlier threads once Miami bowed out, maybe some of the more solid bids gained leverage. Vancouver compared to everyone else left (and those that were gone) did have it's ducks in a row from the out set.

Not bad for an 18 year old kid. FWIW, TFC is pushing through with a full-scale academy (complete with either residency or CHL-style billeting) as well. It's still at least a year away, though. Perhaps two.
