Super League teams are ready for action

Friday, 27 February 2009 14:51 RC Sport

[brøndby, who is currently the league leader, will face off against rival FC Copenhagen on Monday in what will be the biggest match of the season]

There is no certain winner of the Super League as at least four teams look to be preparing to battle it out for the trophy

The Danish Super League begins its season’s second half on Saturday when FC Midtjylland hosts Esbjerg at the SAS Arena in Herning.

Brøndby is currently top of the league with a 12-3-2 record, followed closely by perennial rival FC Copenhagen at 11-4-2. Odense and FC Midtjylland are third and fourth respectively, the four teams being considered as the only ones left in the race for this season’s league title.

UEFA Cup darling and last year’s league champion, Aalborg, is playing great football at the moment, but a terrible Autumn season that saw the firing of head coach Bruce Rioch has left them realistically out of the running this year.

Brøndby - who has won the Super League championship 10 times since 1985 - is back in top form after two years where it finished sixth and eighth in the league’s 12-team standings. Led by a rejuvenated Morten Duncan Rasmussen up front, newer profiles such as defender Max von Schlebrügge, midfielder Samuel Holmén and forward Osman Jallow have helped elevate the team’s play this season.

FC Copenhagen, which has won the league title in five of the past eight seasons, has been playing inconsistently in the UEFA Cup tournament and during the league’s first half.

Despite its second-place standing, analysts believe that Copenhagen has under achieved, despite its strong starting line-up that included seven regular national team players: Libor Sionko and Zdeněk Pospěch of the Czech Republic, Atiba Hutchinson of Canada, and Jesper Christiansen, Martin Vingaard, Jesper Grønkjær and Morten Nordstrand of the Danish national team.

Copenhagen and Brøndby face-off on Monday evening at Brøndby Stadium for the season’s biggest match. Brøndby won the clubs’ Autumn match 1-0 in the first of three season meetings between the two teams. The final FC Copenhagen-Brøndby battle takes place on 17 May at the city’s Parken Stadium.

Odense Boldklub (OB) is still in the thick of the title race at 11-2-4. The club recently unloaded bad apple David Nielsen to Norwegian club Brann Bergen. Late last year Nielsen revealed in his autobiography that he deliberately injured a team-mate during training and conspired to lose matches through playing poorly.

But OB got talented Cameroon midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba out of the deal - one of many transactions the team has made over the past year. The club’s offence will rely heavily on Senegalese attacker Baye Djiby Fall, who started the fall season on fire with nine goals in the team’s first 10 games, but was held scoreless in the last seven.

FC Midtjylland is the wild card in the title race. The team has streamlined in the off-season, renting out several players including Thomas Røll and Baba Collins.

But the club has two of the league’s top position players in midfielder Mikkel Thygesen and forward Jonas Borring, and boasts a strong defence that includes American Danny Califf, Kolja Afriyie of Germany and Danish players Lasse Heinze and Winston Reid.

After playing 17 games in the fall half, Super League teams play 16 during the spring season, with the final season matches taking place on 31 May.

Marcel de Jong is starting for Roda at home to De Graafschap. Score after 57 minutes is 2-1.

De Wree and Andres Oper scored for Roda and Ben Sahar for De Graafschap.

You can watch the final 30mins here : http://nl.justin.tv/rowanf1

EDIT :

Marcel just scores from a free-kick to make it 3-1 just before the end. It was a shocking goalkeeping error but very important nevertheless for Roda.

Adrian Cann comes on in the 77th minute for Esbjerg down 1-0 away to Midtjylland. Esbjerg ties it up in the 89th minute. 1-1 final and no sign of Ornoch.

Ornoch is down with an injury he picked up during preseason training last month.

Here is a link to an interview with Marcel de Jong and a replay of his goal :

http://www.eredivisielive.nl/Video.htm click on his name down the page.

(I'm not sure if the website works outside Holland)

If it doesnt work you can watch his goal here without the interview :

Does anyone know why #10 (Anouar Hadouir) was so angry with his teammates before and after De Jong scores? First he pushes his teammate out of the way and then takes the free kick and then I think it's called back and he gets a yellow card, so De Jong takes it the second time and scores. Then they showed Hadouir after the goal when everyone else celebrating and he's still pissed haha.

Anyone know dutch that knows whats going on?

The manager gave instructions to the Captain (Marcel Meeuwis) to let De Jong take the free-kick.

Hadouir wasnt having it and got into a scruff with Meeuwis and just took the first one too quickly resulting in a yellow card from the ref. Then ofcourse De Jong took it and scored.

Mod Edit: Refrain from these types of commentaries - the portion above is fine, deleted the last portion..

Here's a look at De Jong's goal. I must say the barrier did a bad work, but the important thing is De Jong scored.

EDIT:

Here's another video:

We can see the #10 bad attitude toward his teammates, and he doesn't look happy after De Jong's goal when he missed badly his chance just before De Jong's free kick.

Yah - try editing yourself right off the forum, please. No room for that kind of nonsense here.

Aren't we being just a wee bit harsh with SCF08?

According to SCF08, those who don't take responsibility and feel mistreated for no good reason are great.ers. If even 3 players or so in the Dutch league behaved in this way in the recent past, and they happen to be Moroccan, isn't it human nature to think back to those past instances when commenting on this pathetic display?

Yes, it is a racist-ish comment and in an ideal world/forum, it shouldn't have been said. I just think we should be a bit more tactful in responding to it. SCF08 is a valuable member of the forum. Let's not make the guy feel unwelcome based on one post.

(If it had been a Chilean or an Argentinian, I might have made a comment stereotyping Chilean / Argentinians as whiny bitches because I have seen that type of stuff from those nationalities thousands of times. So although I don't agree with SCF08's comment, I can't judge him).

friend and stalteri both went 90 for borussia vfl in a 2-1 loss to top of the table side, hertha berlin....borussia now 4 points from safety....bradley got the lone goal (7 games without a goal for friend)

no easier next week home to hamburg, but then 5 of 6 against mid-lower table sides...that is where they have to make some hay if they want to avoid the drop.

edgar had a great seat on the second row of the bench to watch his newcastle side lose 1-0 to bolton....NUFC now only 2 points from being second last...at least they will get a good draft pick...err wrong sport.
