OK guys this year we have 2 new Canadian PDL team Victoria Highlanders FC and Forest City London. Now in your opinion which will do better? Of course they are in different divisions. Some weaker some stronger but overall which of the 2 will at the end of the regular season fetch more "points"?

And second of all which Canadian PDL team overall will do the best points wise this year? What's your ranking?

Well the Chill won it all last year so they have bragging rights. The players change so much from year to year it is hard to say. The longer established clubs have more support and in the Chill's case a great reputation as an organization so they attract better players.

I vote for the Caps residency to take it all this year!

Same with me Whitecaps Residency #1

while in the same division Victoria Highlanders FC (12Pts+) behind Whitecaps Res. Then last Abbotsford Mariners last of the canadian teams in that division.

Interestingly enough I recived the Highlanders newsletter stating that the first 1000 season's ticket holders will receive free scarf I belive it said. Wow they are thinking of attracting 1 Thousand season holders........

The Vancouver Whitecaps beyond a doubt, several players from last year's team are now on the senior roster, a few are on loan to European teams and all players are signed to professional contracts.

And that is after only one year of existence.

The whitecaps are one of only two pro teams in the PDL. Laredo is the other and they recently sold a player to Houston.

They are also the youngest team in the PDL

More importantly, which of these teams in the Premier DEVELOPMENT League are actually doing a better job of developing Canadian talent.

Highlanders just put out a very thorough new release, worth reading:

http://www.victoriahighlandersfc.com/news.php?newsid=37

Amongst other things the first 7 signings are all Vancouver Island players, a good start. I know we can't expect T-Bay to do something similar, but it would be nice to see them work on a bit more "nearby" talent, say anywhere from Sudbury to Winnipeg. Knowing how hard it is for a player to basically take off 3 months to play PDL in a different city I'll give them some slack, but this is what we'd like to see I think, a bit more local presence.

Edit: calling all Highlanders or Victoria residents: any pics of the new stadium being built on Langford Parkway? Doesn't appear on Google satellite. The artist rendering on the site looks okay, any official stat on capacity?

Cole MacFarlane is from the Victoria Vikes so qualifies as an 'Island Boy' (sounds like a cabana boy) in that regard but he is an Albertan and got a look with our U17's before heading to U Vic.

Re the Highlander's stadium, found out from another web that it is slated for completion in April, capacity 3500. The Victoria Rebels junior Canadian Football team will also play and practice there.

I suppose the Highlanders don't open at home until late, three weeks into the season, just to make sure it is done, to not get stuck in case of delays.

Perhaps worth noting that they are reigning PDL champs. :)

Also worth noting that there are approximately 3 Canadians on their roster (Yes, that's a dig).

That said I have nothing but respect for this organization. Thunder Bay (which I have seen many times playing matches in Winnipeg) have been in existence for 10 years now, making them one of the Canadian veterans of the pro game.

Hard to believe when one considers how small and isolated Thunder Bay is (and I expect most people on this forum can not appreciate the extent of either). Truly an unbelievable accomplishment for the Chill organization. This small isolated community has done what all the cities on the Prairies (and the rest of Canada) could not do.

Three cheers to Tony Colistro and the Thunder Bay Chill organization:

PDL Champions Chill Announce 2009 Schedule

January 28, 2009 (Thunder Bay)

The defending PDL Champions are pleased to announce the schedule for the upcoming 2009 PDL season.

Going into their 10th season of play, the Chill will start off on the season playing their first four games on the road against the two newest franchises in the Heartland division the Real Colorado Foxes on May 29th and 30th and the Rochester Thunder on June 5th and 6th.

The Chill returns home for four in a row in hosting perennial rivals Des Moines Menace on June 12th and 13th and Real Colorado on June 19th and 20th.

The Chill goes on a long four game road trip starting to visit all teams from Missouri

starting with the St. Louis Lions on June 28th, the Springfield Demize on June 30th, the Kansas City Brass on July 2nd, and the Des Moines Menace on Independence Day, where fireworks are sure to explode.

The Chill then comes home for four straight hosting the St. Louis Lions on July 10th and 11th and the Rochester Thunder on July 15th and 16th.

These latter two games will be played on weekday nights (Wednesday and Thursday) in response to the positive fan turnout last season during the playoffs, when the Chill hosted their first ever playoff game on a Tuesday evening against the now defunct Colorado Rapids Reserve. “We had over a 1000 people at that game” said general manager John Marrello, “and we want to see if that works again this year for our fans”.

Head coach Tony Colistro had mixed feelings regarding the schedule. “I am happy to see Rochester in the league which definitely will help us with travel with one shorter road trip, but having to travel to Denver is going to be a challenge”. “1600 miles will definitely be the furthest divisional road game in Chill history”.

The Chill will most likely play some pre-season games which have yet to be announced. Season tickets are $75 and are on sale by calling 623-5911 or visiting thunderbaychill.com

From the release:

"Logo Change: Originally our colors were blue, green and silver. The logo itself missed the mark with fans and soccer traditionalists. After two months of "test marketing", the decision was made to rebrand the club."

More like: "Those a-holes over at the v's site couldn't stop laughing when we first released our logo."

I remember that logo. It was like a shirt my wife bought me once. I refused to wear it because it was too ugly for words. As a decider we took it over to some friends for a vote. Burn it, wash the car with it and laughter settled the issue.

The new one is much superior! I love the sword for the 'I' in Highlanders on their banner page as well. Nice, very nice.

Hey Piltdown, thanks for the offer to do a picture.

I am going to try to get to one game at least, I think the only ones I could possibly make are any of the last three.

Any idea why games are announced for so late, a 10 PM match on a Friday, is that right? Why won't they play during daylight, I find that odd. Will crowds be good late night under the lights?

The logo change is good, glad they reacted to that problem, and properly.
