Vic
^ Man would it be great to see that team in Canada. Kelly Smith and Alex Scott? Stunning. Christine Latham and Candace Chapman? Angela Hucles and Kris Lilly? ARod? Those are players you drive a day to see.... But doubt there is a Fury team together this early in the year. The team pretty consistently arrives in town in the Summer for the season. There are usually 1 or 2 token players that come out of their youth system on the full roster, but that would be it. Playing them now and playing them in the Summer are two completely different things. One has consistently been a top 5 W team, and one would be a Super Y team. Breakers have 26 in camp but are paring down to travel to Florida mid-March for a week or so and then pare down after that to open the year early April. So the only two windows would be this weekend or after they come back. Billy you're the King of the town now... what's the scoop?
Vic
No big deal at all on the result. We didn't hire her to beat NZ, we hired her to turn the program around. I wonder if the staff even know half the players by name yet. NZ program is such a great example and so well run. Small staff, limited gene pool and player talent pool. Just a great job of coaching. Nice win for the Dutch.

Vic
http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/2009433/Football-Ferns-begin-Cyprus-Cup-with-draw Football Ferns begin Cyprus Cup with draw Last updated 08:34 06/03/2009 New Zealand opened their Cyprus Cup women's football campaign with a 1-1 draw against defending champions Canada in Paralimni, Cyprus, this morning (NZ time). Christine Julien put Canada ahead in the 10th minute but Betsy Hassett equalised for New Zealand in the 34th minute and sparked a strong New Zealand push for the win over the world No 11 side. While pleased with his side's performance against more fancied opposition, New Zealand coach John Herdman said the final score was ultimately disappointing. "In the past, we would've taken a draw against Canada, just the disappointing thing is that this team are looking to win football matches. "We're learning how to win, but it still eludes us," Herdman said. " I think we controlled possession for long periods, and Canada struggled to get out of their own half at times. "We piled a lot of pressure on but with little reward. Right up to the 92nd minute it was backs to the wall stuff for them. "What was really pleasing today was that one of our key players, Betsy Hassett, ran the show today. It was an absolutely standout performance." Elsewhere in Group B, the Netherlands beat Russia 2-1 to top the standings, while in Group A England thrashed South Africa 6-0 and France beat Scotland 2-0. New Zealand face Russia on Sunday morning before meeting the Netherlands on Wednesday. Scores: New Zealand 1 (Betsy Hassett 34th) Canada 1 (Christina Julien 10th). Halftime: 1-

Joe MacCarthy
Some nice video of the girls training and playing in Cyprus and a good quick interview with my ex gf Carolina (CM is a ten year older, blonde doppleganger for an ex). Canadian soccer needs more of this type of thing. Really nice motivational video of the girls (training like Rocky Balboa). One thing though (to the video makers). Can you please not use gawdawful b/g music over your b-roll. Much of the contemporary music does not fit, ruins the nice footage. Tks
VPjr
^ Agreed...good little videos. they don't have to be "professional" quality to be informative. Joe...Agree about the music...not necessary IMO.

Vic
1-1 New Zealand (24) 2-1 Holland (17) 2-0 Russia (15) FINALS: Canada (11) vs. England (10) Pretty much as expected so far, including the lowe-ranked Kiwi's giving the most trouble. Not a bad matchup and with Faye White not on the field we're probably the slight favourite. Kelly Smith is a days work... should be interesting to see who Powell runs her at. Guest Ed
Didn't see this posted, if so, sorry for the redundancy. Article after the loss to England last week. http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/soccer/Optimism+high+despite+Cyprus+loss/1382589/story.html Optimism high, despite Cyprus Cup loss By Peter James, Canwest News ServiceMarch 12, 2009 Canada’s top women’s soccer players appear to have taken an immediate liking to new head coach Carolina Morace. “The players are so excited about the future under Carolina,” Canadian captain Christine Sinclair said in a phone interview Thursday from Nicosia, Cyprus, after Canada lost 3-1 to England in the final of the Cyprus Women’s Cup. “We’ve only been together a month, and to be in the final of a tournament is a huge success for us.” Canada was the defending champion at the eight-team tournament and were undefeated through group play before meeting England. Morace took over the program in February after longtime coach Even Pellerud left to coach Trinidad and Tobago. She was a standout player for Italy in the 1980s and ’90s and coached the Italian national side from 2000 to 2005. “Just having her around, day in and day out with this team, everyone is going to get better,” Sinclair said. Canada, ranked 11th in the world, tied New Zealand 1-1 to open the tournament then scored a 2-1 win over the Netherlands and blanked Russia 2-0 to earn a trip to the final. The team has shown great potential in recent years, but has failed to reach the semifinals at either an Olympic Games or a World Cup since 2003. Morace hopes to change that and Sinclair said the players have taken the initiative themselves. “Starting this year, players are playing in Europe, playing in the U.S.A., playing in professional leagues,” Sinclair said. “I think everyone is going to be in a better soccer environment day in and day out when they’re not in (national) soccer team camp.” Sinclair got Canada on the board 14 minutes into Thursday’s game with her 99th career international goal, converting a feed from Melissa Tancredi. “Melissa Tancredi got the ball and she saw me running and she was putting the ball over top (of the defenders),” Sinclair explained. “The goalie came out to the top of the (penalty area) and I was in on a breakaway. She came out and I lofted the ball over her.” The lead was short-lived as England struck three times in the final 13 minutes of the first half. Lianne Sanderson, Kelly Smith and Fara Williams all managed to get shots passed Canadian goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc. “England is one of the best teams in Europe. They’re at their peak right now,” Sinclair said. “We were able to take a lot away from the game. We have our heads held high. . . . It was probably our best game of the tournament.” Sinclair will have the chance to score her 100th goal for Canada on home turf. The women’s squad has a rare home game coming up when Japan visits Toronto’s BMO Field on May 25. “We’re so excited to play in Canada. We love playing at home when we get to,” Sinclair said. © Copyright © Canwest News Service
