Great to draw a group without any monsters to begin a new era. Group A has two Top 10 teams (England and France). At #11 we are the marquis team in Group B with Russia (#14), Holland (#17) and the Kiwis (24).

Most of the heavyweights are in Algarve in March. USA, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and China, Finland, Iceland.

Thanks Jonny.

^ don't count on it.

In fairness, I'd be shocked if these tournament games are shown on TV in any of the countries that will be taking part. I might be wrong.

I think the CSA certainly needs to give more consideration to providing webcasts of every match involving one of its NTs as long as a professional broadcast is available to tap into.

Carolina Morace will make her Canadian coaching debut this 5 March at the 2009 Cyprus Cup. Morace will lead the women’s national team in the eight-team competition from 5-12 March. Canada will play New Zealand on 5 March, Netherlands on 7 March, Russia on 10 March, and (hopefully) an opponent from the opposite group in the final on 12 March.

Canada is the defending Cyprus Cup champion, having won the last event last March. While much of the Canadian lineup should be the same, it will be led by the newly-hired head coach Morace. Should Morace reach the 2009 final, she will be up against either France, England, South Africa or Scotland.

Canada’s first opponent will be New Zealand (2 wins, 2 draws and 9 losses in 2008) on 5 March. In their last encounter before the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, Canada and New Zealand drew 1:1 at Queenstown Stadium in Singapore. Of note to this game, captain Christine Sinclair could set a national record by making her 123rd career start.

Canada then faces Netherlands (7-5-2 in 2008) on 7 March. Three years ago, Canada beat Netherlands twice in a pair of international friendly matches in Vancouver and Victoria.

Canada’s last group game is Russia (5-1-3 in 2008) on 10 March. The two sides last met a year ago at the 2008 Cyprus Cup (a 2:1 Canadian victory). After match three, the first-place team in the group advances to the Cyprus Cup final.

Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and presenting sponsor is Teck, is currently training in California in its first camp under head coach Morace. The team breaks 18 February, but then will regroup in Rome in the days before the Cyprus Cup begins.

Roster for the camp in Rome was released. Not sure if this is same one for the Cyprus Cup since there's some players missing I presume because of college commitments (Lang and Folingo)?

Staff used to be 9 people for a few years. That grew to 11 and now we are up to 14. For an organization that claims to have no money and is forced to leave people behind, I wonder how many more staff will the CSA send to international friendlies if they had money. A scary thought is beside the coach Ms. Morace, who manages all this slew of staff.

It's always a good sign when you can scrimmage your staff and they can afford to have 3 subs....

Everybody except for the Coach and Manager.

Your kidding, right?

If not, that's the most ridiculous thing you've ever posted....you are WAY smarter than that.

To me, this is actually a positive sign.

They have very high quality coaches working with this team. This is the type of support top football nations provide their head coaches.

People who think that a team can be properly by 2 people (coach and manager) are off their rocker.

Morace knows what she needs and is getting the resources she insists on. Its all about winning. With these types of resources, she can have no excuses, long term, if she doesn't get results.

As a soccer community, we need to stop thinking like misers when it comes to funding our national teams, especially the senior teams.

Who is the away team in a tournament in Cyprus? Do the Cypriots sponsor the teams to bring in the additional travel to their economy? And even if that is the case, it can't be much if the Kiwis are only bringing in a staff of 6.

I think the reason we think like misers is because we've been told for decades we have no money, and I think that's fairly accurate. And yes, that is the type of support top football nations provide their head coaches.

The reason the Americans send 14 staff is because they have a money machine that provides complete tip-to-tails across the board funding - athletes paid extremely and incredibly well, massively resourced youth teams and programs, hefty scouting budgets, and an enormous underlying amateur and professional framework.

We obviously aren't funded a tenth as well as the US, so unless there's been a big influx of cash from somewhere, our bringing 14 also is an obvious imbalance between the act and the reality of our program. I think it's great we are closing the gap on our staff support for women's team, I just hope we can continue and close some of those other more important major imbalances above like player funding, program depth, youth programs, etc.

It takes a lot more than competent coaching to revolutionize a program, and I really can't see how a comprehensive closing of the gap is going to occur without bringing in an extremely competent Women's Program Director to go after things like funding, partnerships, marketing, off-the-field business management, and laying the groundwork for professionalizing the women's game in Canada.

If you're looking at ROI on your money, that's a pretty good place to invest.
