Bill Ault
Hearing from a couple of places that Kerfoot has pulled his funding from the women's side (at all levels) - expect to see a completely locally based Whitecaps side for 2009....? Anyone else hearing this.
VPjr
would not surprise me. i heard that the Whitecaps made a proposal about partially funding the WNT but that wasn't accepted (likely because of some provisions that were attached to that money that the CSA was unwilling to live with). Richard
I believe you're right in that the Whitecaps 2009 W-League team will be comprised mostly local players.
CoachRich
^ Yep, no Kerfoot funding as of Sep/Oct when the CSA turned down the proposed 2 part program no reason for Kerfoot to renew & fund part 1 the new WP w/ the CSA. Also the window of opportunity on the Caps (MLS group, no CSA) funded WPSL team (part 2 of the proposed 2 part program )as the majority of the WNT Seniors are playing pro elsewhere now. MM2
I was surprised that Vancouver didn't go after a WPS franchise, they have the perfect sized stadium, and would have had a good core of quality Canadian players to recruit from.
Vic
Like last time hard to judge without seeing the proposal. With the changeover the CSA probably thought it premature to dictate to the new architect right out of the gate though. Glad to hear about using community players. Most of the other W teams do that and kudos to them all for furthering the pyramid and giving the opportunity and training to local girls and women. I guess the handful of teams that had a professional approach and didn't go WPS now have the same decision (Indiana, Ottawa, Pali, etc). Looking forward to seeing the QC Arsenal this year too. AlanDouglas
Traditionally the team has always relied heavily on local players, but the last two seasons had to look further afield because so many of the locals were tied up with national team duty. I have heard that the Caps want to focus more on player development this season. That suits me fine, as last year's young PCSL reserve squad had a ton of talent, and played some really nice soccer. They were my favourite Whitecaps team to watch last year.
The Ref
The Whitecaps women U19 is the only Canadian team participating in the Las Vegas showcase this year.
Vic
Now that Kingston's Busby has been hired from the L.A. Sol will the Whitecaps Women bring in a core of professionals this year to boost a WPS bid? It would be nice setup in the future if a locally-based W League team could enjoy the fruits of a WPS Sister team and become the feeder. Under that scenario it could become the girl's version of the residency and they could turn out a lot of great local players.
Richard
From what I have heard the Whitecaps will continue to draw locally for their W-League team and there has been no talk of a residency as there is for the men. Busby lives in North Vancouver as far as I am aware so this job brings him home. There is some interest in WPS but the 'Caps are focussed on preparing for their MLS launch. I wouldn't expect any WPS moves till some time after that.
hc1
Thats somewhat disappointing. I had been hoping for a move to WPS in 2011 in conjunction with their MLS start... but I can understand thats a lot to bite off all at once... Maybe 2012 I guess... Vic
I doubt anyone believes a girl's residency will ever happen, but with a WPS team there is a lot under it's umbrella that could provide a somewhat similar pathway for local girls and women. And I wouldn't count out any timelines. Without a doubt the conversations have already taken place and I doubt the WPS would turn down a solid franchise even under what by MLS timelines would be very short notice.
