And the keeper for the PDL?? I think they went to press with misprints :)

"Diego, 22, joins the Whitecaps after being initially spotted with AC Corintians, who are a Brazilian first division club based in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, during a friendly match that was presented by The Soccer Paper last September at Swangard Stadium. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound goalkeeper was on a three-month loan from ABC FC, who are also a Brazilian first division club in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. As a member of ABC FC, he helped them win state championship titles in 2007 and 2008."

At 22 and playing in Brazil's Serie A with the Corinthians to the PDL? I don't think so.

Now at 6'5" and 205 pounds he is one nice sized goalie! That will cover a lot of net unless that is also a typo ;)

These Corinthians are a small(er) club from northern Brazil, not the famous one from Sao Paolo (although their uniforms and crest are somewhat similar).

The keeper in question isn't listed on their website, but it doesn't seem particularly up-to-date.

So perhaps PDL makes sense?

(although to be honest, I'm not just very familiar with the level of players in that league)

Ah that helps. Thanks for the explanation.

It still sounds weird signing a 1 year plus option with a PDL team? Unless that is to develop and check him out for a year then decide if he goes first team.

Interesting. We'll have to see.

Generally pretty unusual for a Euro or SA keeper to come to North America... tends to be the other way around. Kids here grow up with more hand sports (basketball, football, baseball, etc) than kids around the world. Ask someone to throw you a ball in Europe or South America and you will roll on the floor laughing at their form. Makes you wonder what in God's green earth would motivate someone to leave a soccer haven like Brazil to dance with the polar bears. Running from a shotgun wedding? Nagging spouse? Bill collectors?

Back in the day when I dealt with such things, I would get one or two emails a week from young Brazilians wanting to come play in Vancouver. The way they describe it, there are so many players in Brazil that it is hard to get noticed. You have to know the right people to get anywhere.
