Was not called up to the MNT for years. He had been paired up with Serioux, once? before the Jamaica game.

Hastings played 12 games in 2007-2008 prior to the Jamaica game as a CB for us.

Mckenna played 2 games in 2007 (South Africa and Bermuda) prior to the Jamaica game.

Serioux and Hastings played 90 min together 3 times (Panama, Brasil and SVG) prior to the Jamaica game.

Serioux and Mckenna have never played together as CB prior to the Jamaica game.

^ Ample proof that Mitchell and Yallop could not find their asses with two hands. McKenna, prized by the coke fiend, can't buy a game with Canada.

lol

most of the caps we're talking about happened during "The Great" Stephen Hart interim....

Mckenna was called for the GC but declined due to an injury.

TBH, I never felt comfortable with any of our centers back. It was always going to be our main issue but it's not what killed us in the first 2 games....so talking about a major fcuk up, I don't think so.

Pat and Lars weren't tested that much during those two games and the central defense looked OK IMO. Getting caught on the counter against Honduras can't be blame on the back 4.

I'd also add that the winner in Honduras came about when our central mids challenged the same guy yet were unable to prevent him from getting his pass through to Costly, who had a clear run and time to tee up his shot (albeit, an outstanding long range effort).

what ed said.

Hart brought Hastings back into the program for the 2 pre gold cup friendlies in 07 and then the gold cup. before that his last game was the ireland friendly in 03. What was going on between 03 and 07? Oh yea, McKenna was scoring goals and was CAPTAIN of the team.

Was McKenna given a fair shot by Mitchell? Nope.

dont try to obscure the real point, which is the following:

club career pedigree, positioning, concacaf experience, CB experience, speed, familiarity with the squad, leadership, offense... ALL areas where McKenna AND Jim Brennan are Superior to Hastings.

You are kidding right?

Concacaf experience? 53 caps for Hastings vs 38 caps for Kevin.

Familiarity with the squad? In 2007, Hastings started most of our games as CB while Kevin played in only 2. Of course, it must be said that Kevin was injured during the GC, it cost him the chance to prove himself.

Speed? I'm pretty sure Hastings is quicker than Kevin.

Look, I'm not saying Richard is superior to Kevin in those areas but making it sound like Kevin is far superior to Hastings in those areas is a misleading at best.

Jesus, I'm not even a fan of Hastings but I didn't know Mckenna had been so good for us in the past. As far as I'm concern I would play him up front instead of Friend.

Hastings was recently brought back into the team for 07. McKenna had been an undisputed starter since 2003 and captain since 2004. Im talkin about years of familiarity and respect with the squad. McKenna was a core member of the new generation of players that were to lead us to the promised land. Hastings was an outsider, and getting games in 07 and becoming a mitchell pet project doesnt change that.

Not having McKenna's leadership and vocal organization in the back really hurt us. It bothers me that you are trying to gloss over one of the most obvious reasons why Mitchell should have been fired months ago.

Serioux to def mid with imhof out + McKenna and Brennan at CB + hirschfeld = Hex. End of.

Well, our team wasn't that much active after the 2005 GC until the 2007 GC, so things were always going to change.

Your still ignoring that Hastings and Serioux didn't played bad games or cost us points in the first 2 games. Not sure that was Mitchell worst choice. Yup Kevin gives you another option on set pieces but we still scored on one and had other tall players on the field. When choosing your CB I doubt offense is the top priority of any coach.

Hastings got the benefit of a good GC while Mckenna was out with an injury. McKenna got a chance against South Africa but played like a U-14 boy, not sure Mitchell was too impress.

I would agree with the fact that he should've maybe been given another chance after that game but we play so few games that it becomes tricky. Do we give time to our favourite CB pairing or time for everyone to make us forget about their mistakes.

Among our players I can only see 2 players above the rest, Radz and JDG. The rest are just guys that will battle for their spot on the team.

It all comes down to the fact that Mitchell (and Yallop before him) have no f*ing clue as to who is in form or out of form. If there is any evidence that either of those geniuses has ever even seen a Bundesliga 1 or 2 match in Germany involving Cdns, let's see it. They see Bobby McMahon talking about Inverness or Ipswich or some equally poor MLS side (TFC, Dallas) and the eyes bug out with excitement. Clowns.

True.

I guess you were agreeing with Yallop when he didn't call a certain Heart defender in 2004? That was by all accounts the only good move by Yallop in 2004....

Ed, I understand it hurt your feelings not to see a local boys starting for us but unless you have some evidence (MNT play) that he was a deserving starter at the back I will give the benefit of the doubt to Mitchell for that one. To his credit, the CB didn't cost us the first 2 games and the players who played there weren't some clowns with no international experience.

I'm not sure I can see a bias toward MLS or Great Britain by our coaching staff in the selection they've made. We had players coming from a lot of different leagues.

I wouldn't mind seeing a 4-1-3-2 formation tried out (assuming all players are healthy and everyone agrees to play) maybe in the next friendly against Cyprus.

------------------------------Sutton-----------------------------------

Stalteri------------Hastings---------McKenna------------------Klukowski

----------------------------Serioux------------------------------------

----------DeRosario---------DeGuzman------------Hutchison--------------

----------------------Friend-----------Gerba---------------------------

Oh and hello to all I might add :D. Been reading the forums for awhile and finally decided to start posting.

Welcome!!!

It's a pretty solid lineup but like you said if everyone agree to play.

I would make two change, Hirschfeld instead of Sutton and Serioux at the back instead of Hastings with Imhoff playing as a holding mid.

Thanks for the welcome guys ;). In terms of your suggestions loyola; I was thinking of using Serioux with McKenna and having Imhof in there as defensive mid but to be honest I haven't seen him play too much so I can't really judge his play. Plus I figured that Serioux prefers playing defensive mid and since Hastings was relatively solid for us during qualifying...

As for Hirschfeld, I like Lars but to be honest he didn't really overly impress me in the qualifying games that I watched. Definitely a better option than Onstad at this point but if Sutton gets a good run of form with TFC, might be time to give him a run as #1.

Agree about Lars, he wasn't impresive during the WCQ games. But Sutton will be in the middle of the season when GC time arrive while Lars will be in his off season, so that's why I wouldn't call Greg.

Anyways, let's hope we can have a nice mix of younger and more experienced players for this GC.

Maybe something positive will come out of a bad situation(Mitchell staying on)! If several of older established players turn down an invite to the Gold Cup we may finally get a good look at players such as Edgar, Jakovich, Johnson and maybe the likes of a guy like Jackson! I agree Sutton, if he is in good form should be given a run, whether he will even accept a call remains to be seen! Just trying to stay positive!

If Canada plays in seattle on Saturday, july 4......methinks I'll drive from Edmonton to Calgary on Thursday night. Drive to Vancouver Friday. Down to Seattle Saturday, then drive back to Calgary Sunday and finally home, cured from any hangovers on Monday....details to follow....

According the ticketmaster a group containing: Mexico, Panama, Guadeloupe, and Nicaragua are playing in Houston.

http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0C00427E742F4E39?artistid=960349&majorcatid=10004&minorcatid=11

If we take that to be true:

First Round

July 3 – The Home Depot Center (Los Angeles) (Group 1)

July 4 – Qwest Field (Seattle)(Group 2)

July 5 – Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum (San Francisco)(Mexico Group)

July 7 – Crew Stadium (Columbus, Ohio)(Group 1)

July 8 – Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium (Washington)(Group 2)

July 9 – Reliant Stadium (Houston)(Mexico Group)

July 10 – Florida International University Stadium (Miami)(Group 1)

July 11 – Gillette Stadium (Boston)(Group 2)

July 12 – University of Phoenix Stadium (Phoenix)(Mexico Group)

Of course the draw takes place tomorrow so all of this will be irrelevant tomorrow, but Canada will either be in group 1 or 2 and therefore will have at least one game on the east coast which screams for a roadtrip [:P]

Im just wondering why Issey? Johnson has been starting for the best team in MLS, is 3 years younger and seems to have always played well at every level. Issey isn't starting in denmark.

Where is De Rosario? Simpson is a left sided mid or striker.

Besides that great write up. Would have been nice to see write ups and comparisons with other players who are vying for a midfield position such as Imhof, Johnson, Hume and Ledgerwood

I talked about Johnson about I week ago I'm putting him in a forward pool, because Canada rarely play two upfront usually a striker with a withdrawn forward or attacking midfielder ie. Johnson.

As for Hume I don't think he'll be fit for the Gold Cup I think he will opt to wait for the start of the Barnsley season
