Guest Ed
As posted on their site. Good pick IMHO! And Julian will be on GOLTV live on Saturday as Deportivo la Coruna host Seville in a league match.
jonovision
Agreed. Still not sure how De Ro ended up #2.
BearcatSA
quote:Originally posted by jonovision Agreed. Still not sure how De Ro ended up #2. Here's the vote breakdown. Half the votes were by the Canadian media, the other half by the CSA's "A" and "B" level coaches: 1. Julian de Guzman (30.5) 2. Dwayne De Rosario (15.6) 3. Ali Gerba (11.3) 4. Atiba Hutchinson (8.9) 5. Tomasz Radzinski (8.6) 6. Mike Klukowski (6.4) 7. Adrian Serioux (6.1) 8. Rob Friend (5.2) 9. Paul Stalteri (3.9) 10. Iain Hume (0.3) 11. David Edgar (0.3) 12. Lars Hirschfeld (0.2) I see that Friend didn't get a whole lot of love despite being a key member of his Bundesliga promoted side.
jonovision
My own suspicions are that there is a GTA/England bias (would explain Stalteri ranking as high and Edgar getting votes at all), but it's hardly worth talking about since the right player won. CanadasBest
The CSA Vote should be renamed "CSA Senior Men's Popular Player of the Year Award" Ironically enough "CSA Senior Men's Best Dressed Player of the Year" also would be in the same order. And "CSA Senior Men's Partier of the Year." It's going to be pretty tough for JDG or DeRosario to lose this title until they retire, or we get an up and coming star. The only vote that matters is the Voyageurs vote. [^]
marktci
Of course the CP article buries the lede: quote:De Guzman came second in 2008 fan voting conducted by the Voyageurs supporters group, which named midfielder-striker Tomasz Radzinski winner of its Canadian International Player of the Year. http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/568282
redhat
quote:Originally posted by gwallace76 The only vote that matters is the Voyageurs vote. [^] Agree 100%. Not surprising though; these same polls named DDR as the top senior player in the previous year (2007), despite JDG having been named Deportivo's top player and Gold Cup MVP for that same year. Good for our Senior Men's Partier of the Year too!
Guest Ed
^ Actually Julian was not named Deportivo's top player in the 2006-2007 season and hardly played up until Dec 2007, so he was not in that elite category club-wise for calendar year 2007. I am surprised how ignorant the voters were as you would have to be brain dead to suggest that many of the players listed ahead of Friend were deserving of the award. Obviously, most are too focused on England. How can anyone of sound mind suggest that David Edgar was deserving of an award for calendar year 2008? BearcatSA
quote:Originally posted by dsqpr Congrats to JDG, but we need some kind of annual award for best player in Canada internationals. Ali Gerba deserved an award for his performances for Canada this year. He also got third place in the V's poll: I think that's a good point of recognition for his efforts. Eric
http://www.canadasoccer.com/eng/media/viewArtical.asp?Press_ID=3483 To have two defenders wining player of the year awards in BC is admitting that CATENACCIO is the game they play over there or am I wrong? Congrats Jules, no other canadian is competing at higher level than him, he deserves to be the best imo.
