CSL 2009 - Pre-Season News/Rumours/etc Thread

Hi Guys

Its January...the new season feels a long way off.

I thought it was a good idea to start a CSL News and Rumours thread to possibly get a little discussion going.

I can start it off by sharing a few tidbits of info that I've stumbled upon over the past two weeks:

1. CSL 2008 Coach of the Year Rafael Carbajal will not be returning to North York Astros for the 2009 season. What his future holds is not 100% certain at this moment but he has some irons in the fire.

2. 2008 Vaughn Italia Shooters coach Carmine Issaco will not be returning to that club either for 2009. There is apparently a new investor joining the fold at the Shooters so that club might be gunning to do big things in 2009.

3. Shane Lammie of the Astros is recovering very nicely from his serious leg injury incurred at the end of last season. He should be back ready to go for 2009.

Feel free to add any other information you might have gathered. For those of us who like the CSL, its time to shake off the cobwebs and start talking about 2009

1. Oh well, is too bad Carbajal won't be coaching the Astros next season, is he coaching an other club in the CSL? him and his stuff were directly responsible for the outcome of the last two seasons, I hope the Astros owner can keep running the same competitive team Carbajal put together.

2. Is this investor bringing real italian players from Italy?

3. Happy to hear about Shane, he deserves a break.

4. And where is Dos Santos going? will he become De Santis assistant coach?

^ I think I read somewhere that the TR Attak coach from 2008 is definitely moving up to be an assistant to Limniatis at the Impact.

I have no idea about what the new investors at vaughn shooters have in mind. if the league REALLY believes that this international division is something more than a silly gimmick, maybe the team should field some players from the "old country". Somehow, I doubt it.

There will be expansion in 2009. How many teams will join the league for 2009 won't be announced for about 1 month (they have their AGM in February)

I highly doubt the Open cup will resume

I am led to believe that Rogers will continue broadcasting the Game of the Week each and every Friday night.

Thanks VPjr

Hopefully big cities like Hamilton and Ottawa could get a team.

I really think that they should have done an Open Cup, not having one is a mistake.

I know its a long shot, but they should try and get a game or two on sportsnet or something. That can really help the profile of the league and get more people aware that it exists.

it has been discussed here on the forum that there is alot of talk that Hamilton will be in CSL for 2009 but I guess we won't know for sure until the CSL AGM. Ottawa would be great too, although the travel is one reason why i could see it not happening any time soon (despite the fact that senior soccer in Ottawa is pretty healthy)

Why is travelling to Trois-Rivières OK but not to Ottawa?

I made that comment based on my belief that TR will probably move over to the new Quebec semi-pro league that will commence in 2010 (supposedly). It just makes sense.

I think travelling from Ontario to TR for a game is a bit much for a league of this caliber. I'd rather see the furthest travel distanced for a game be 250 km from downtown Toronto (in any direction). just my opinion

^ where did you get that fact from? in many countries around the world, the pro leagues initiated in one city only spreading to the rest of the country after decades from their initiation. I think you should look more into this fact before spreading wrong info here.

People like bytown (aka jaydog####) like to think that soccer leagues are designed on paper (Just look up city populations and assign them teams accordingly)... They're the kind of guys that keep asking Cary K "Why doesn't Kingston have a team" and think that the league is somehow biased against cities outside the GTA.

They never stop to think about the reasons why teams exist where they are, such as:

- Who is putting up the money for franchises? Where do they live? (Answer: GTA Businessmen & soccer lovers)

- How much would a new team outside the GTA have to travel? How much would it cost? (Answer: A lot)

- Does the average CSL wage justify moving from where you currently live or work? (Answer: No)

- Where do the majority of potential players live/work? (Answer: GTA)

THANK YOU L.T.

The GTA is a geographically huge area with a very large population. I would argue that the GTA still has too many pockets that are not represented or under represented (i.e. Oshawa, Pickering, Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, Guelph, K/W, Richmond Hill/Aurora)

LOL ...then we better advise bytown to look into the fact that 2/3 of Canada's entire population is concentrated in two provinces only (Ontario and Quebec) therefore and based on his vision on how a pro league should start, then any professional league should have it origins in the southeast ....oh wait a minute, isn't the CSL doing just that?

Interesting news about the Italia Shooters. I think the 24th minute said as much (they were flush with cash by CSL standards). Considering how strong soccer is north of Toronto, I think if they set it up properly they have a chance to put more fans in the stands.

I'm hoping that in the future these clubs with money can start stealing players who are ready to play at a higher level from the OSL at a younger age.

So be honest about things and call your top local league the GTAPSL or something like that.
