Guest Ed
FC St Pauli's friendly with FC Schalke 04 has been called off due to a frozen pitch at Millentor stadium. Looks like Daniel Imhof is working his way back to the starting holding midfielder for VfL Bochum. Started and played the first half in that position today in a 1-0 loss to FSV Frankfurt. With Zdebel released, the position looks like his to lose for the relegation threatened Bundesliga 1 side.
Guest Ed
A good opportunity for young Adam Straith and Eddie Sidra the other day as they were part of the Energie Cottbus amateur (U23) squad that took on the senior Energie Cottbus team in a test match. Sidra came out towards the end of the 1st half but Straith got a full 90 in the back line. FC Energie Cottbus: Tremmel (46. Piplica) - Angelov, Radeljic, Cvitanovic, Ziebig - Rajnoch, Rost (54. Vasiljevic, 73. Burca) - Skela (54. Adi Filho), Iliev (75. Shao) - Rangelov (63. Jula), Sörensen (68. Jelic) FC Energie Cottbus U23: Pentke - Bittroff, Hackenberg, Straiht, Birk - Thielemann (46. Kanik) - Sidra (43. Mentes), Krieger (67. Huth) - Lerchl - Zimmermann (62. Galm), Petersen (37. Verkic) Tore: 1:0 Rangelov (17.), 2:0 Rangelov (20.), 3:0 Iliev (27.), 4:0 Rangelov (37.) Guest Ed
Season reopens this weekend but in the meantime there are still 16 teams alive in the German FA Cup (DFB Pokal). Only 1 Canadian player remains in the hunt. Tuesday: Hamburger SV - 1860 München (Nik Ledgerwood - in rehab for tendinitis) Jena - Schalke 04 Freiburg - Mainz VfB - FC Bayern Leverkusen - Cottbus Wednesday Dortmund - Bremen Wolfsburg - Rostock KSC - Wehen Wiesbaden
Guest Ed
David Hoilett in action from the weekend. FC St Pauli lost 3-0 to top tier club VfL Wolfsburg.
Guest Ed
Kevin Mckenna played the second game (0:0 draw with Fortuna Dusseldorf) and, in fact, scored the winning penalty as FC Koeln won the 'WinterCup' in Dusseldorf. They also advanced via penalties over Hertha Berlin in their opener. In this tourney, games are only 1 half long. Watch Big Kev score the winning PK here: http://www.fc-koeln.de/index.php?id=2313
Guest Ed
1860 are knocked out of the Cup; Nik wasn't dressed today as he is still rehabbing tendinitis in the knee. Not Canuck related, Donovan makes his debut with Bayern Munich as he replaces Toni with 30 minutes to go in a 5-0 blowout over VfB Stuttgart. Looks like Schalke 04, Bayern Munich, Hamburger SV and Mainz 05 are through to the quarters from today's action.
Guest Ed
Kennedy Owusu-Ansah is on trial with Real Salt Lake of MLS. Good move for him as he was getting next to nothing in playing time with Hertha's reserves. http://keepinitrealsl.blogspot.com/2009/01/preseason-roster.html
Keegan
KOA played some friendly games with the Galaxy in 2006 with Yallop before going to Europe and impressed at just 16. Around the same time he made his U20 debut. Very impressive player and promising player then, at the 2007 U20s versus Congo he was one of our best players if not the best. I think he is a perfect player for MLS I always thought he was better than Nana who is one of the best young defenders in the league. If he doesnt catch on in Real Salt Lake then Im sure Frank would like him in San Jose. Toronto should want him but they have a whole other agenda.... ag futbol
Great news. I thought he was extremely entertaining in the time i saw him play at the U-20. Honestly he's probably better off at RSL in anycase (than Toronto). They pay a pretty good possession game by MLS standards and their player work extremely hard off the ball to get open. Prognosis for playing in Toronto would be the bench in my opinion (deserved or not).
nolando
KOA probably deserves his own thread - I almost missed this one myself. OT - but what is the highest number of Canadians we have had in the MLS in single season? It must have been during TFC's time, no?
Guest Ed
After a long winter break, the Bundesliga comes alive this weekend with lots of Canucks in action. Friday Bundesliga 1 No Canucks in action but the Yanks will be salivating as Landon Donovan is in the Bayern squad away to Hamburger SV but expect him to be a late sub for either of the starting strikers - Klose and Toni. Bundesliga 2 Canadian David Hoilett starts as a wide attacker as FC St Pauli kick off the 2nd half away to VfL Onsnabrueck. The season opener was a 2-2 draw and a win by St Pauli could push them up close to the leaders. Saturday Bundesliga 1 The much anticipated return of Paul Stalteri to the Bundesliga occurs with Borussia Moenchengladbach away to VfB Stuttgart. The 'Gladbach home match vs Stuttgart was their season opener, a 3-1 loss, with Friend scoring the lone goal in the 2nd half (Lehmann robbed Friend - no pun intended - on a number of chances in the first half). That was a Sunday match and Friend started for Canada that Wednesday vs Jamaica. Looks like Stalteri will be slotting in at right back while Rob Friend will be flanked by Matmour (right) and Marin (left) in attack. The very highly rated centre half Geromel is out with a red card suspension so Kevin McKenna steps into the lineup for FC Koeln as they host VfL Wolfsburg. The Volkswagen boys came from behind to beat Koeln 2-1 in the season opener, so Koeln will be looking for revenge. Koeln (11th) are 4 pts back of Wolfsburg (9th). A win should will see Koeln stay with teams in the top half of the table. Sunday Bundesliga 1 Daniel Imhof will be the starting holding mid for VfL Bochum as they host SC Karlsruhe. Dani Fernandes starts in goal as they look to avenge their 1-0 loss in the opener. A win would see Bochum (17th on 11 pts) leapfrog Karlsruhe (15th on 13 pts) out of the relegation zone. Note that the relegation format has changed somewhat this year. The bottom two - 17th and 18th in the table - (not three as in years past) go down for sure. The 16th place team has a relegation play off against the 3rd highest finisher in the Bundesliga 2 for that final spot in the Bundesliga 1. Bundesliga 2 Kicker has Nik Ledgerwood back on the bench for 1860 Muenchen as they host the Schwarzwald side SC Freiburg. They lost the opener 2-1. Monday Bundesliga 2 No lineups announced yet as FC Kaiserslautern host FV Mainz 05 to end the week. That would be the game to see this weekend as it is a top of the table tilt with the winner moving into sole possession of first place. The season opener ended in a miracle 3-3 draw (K'town were down 3-0 at the half). Should be a great game.
frank
Great work ED. Looks like all Canadians in the Bundesliga will start for their teams. For the Rheinland-Pfalz Derby on Monday Fck vs Mainz, Kaiserslautern already sold 45,000 tickets, they are awaiting a sold out arena. Coach Sasic is thinking about lining up Josh as second striker, as Erik Jednrisek is still injured. The final line up will be announced monday morning
Guest Ed
David Hoilett starts for FC St Pauli, tucked in behind the striker. Has a couple of chances but is subbed out on the hour mark as FC St Pauli are losing 1-0 in Osnabrueck. Fast and furious action in Osnabrueck as FC St Pauli draw even through Hennings in the 65th minute, drop behind 2-1 a minute later and then tie it up at 2-2 as Bruns converts a PK in the 68th. My mistake on the formation; looks like David H was playing as usual on the left flank .
Guest Ed
I know it's February but to finish up on this weekend's action, Josh Simpson came on just before the whistle as FC Kaiserslautern come from behind to draw 1-1 with FSV Mainz 05 today. The draw knocks both teams out of the top 2, overcome by SC Freiburg and SpVgg Greuther Fuerth, who both won on the weekend. Not reported in Canadians Abroad, Kevin McKenna continues what arguably could be described as the best Canadian season in Germany as his FC Koeln hold out for a 1-1 draw with VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday to remain 11th in the Bundesliga 1. Kevin went 90 as a central defender.
