CSA Arranges Government Funding

Recommended Posts

The CSA has arranged funding from $3,00 to $24,000 for around 30 potential members of the mens U20 team and for 30 or so potential players on the national womens teams. The funding is from Sport Canada and the amount per player is on the Sport Canada website. The National womens team players get the most, up to $24,000 while the U20s are getting up to $14,0000.

Congratulations to the CSA for arranging the funding. Last year (2007) Sport Canada did not give any money to soccer players so this is a big improvement.

Paul Stalteri has a club and the CSA did something right, both in one day? What's next, Jack Warner returning money?

The money flows to all Olympic atheletes, the carded system has existed a long time ... to say the CSA arranged this .. is a bit of crock, it is Sport Canada money, the CSA part is to nominate the players and submit the signed agreements and plans.

What would be interesting is and access to information request to see the submitted documentation.

I checked the 2007 list of carded athletes and did not see any soccer players on it. When was the last time male soccer players were on the list?

Its interesting that players who we assume are professional, are on the list and getting government funding, people like Farran, Bonafacio, Gala, Vukovic and Gyan. Why would professionals be entitled to government assistace. Is it because they are not getting paid well. Is there a cut-off point, for example athletes earning more than $100,000 per year are not eligible.

What's funny about this is that all the players on the TFC reserves just doubled their salaries.

i noticed the same thing....well, at least some of these lads will finally be making something approximating a decent wage.

OK, let's see here:

1. The Sport Canada funding for carded athletes has been in place for decades.

2. The funding comes from Sport Canada.

3. The CSA's role is to submit a list of nominated players to Sport Canada.

4. Last year no Canadian male soccer players receieved such funding.

5. This is the first year such funding of Canadian men will occur.

Rather than claim this as a success for the CSA, it seems to me that we should be asking what happened last year and all the years before, when such funding did not occur.

Perhaps it took several years for the CSA Board to negotiate a Memorandum of Understanding which was acceptable to all provinces, and delegated the authority to an ad hoc committee to submit a list of nominated players? Well bravo, well done CSA! You managed to get a list of players typed up... congratulations on your great success!

Not quite true as I know that many players from the late 80's early 90's were carded, at least at the Olympic team level. Guys like Rob Reed, Mike Mosher, Scott Munson, Pesch, etc...
