Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency recorded a second-straight victory on their 12-day tour of Japan, as they defeated Takigawa Kobe U-19's 4-1 on Monday.

Despite going behind early, Thomas Niendorf's side went on to score four unanswered goals and claim a second victory in as many days in the Far East nation. American striker Drew Russell contributed to the result with two of the Residency team's four goals.

On a cloudy and cool afternoon in Kobe, Japan, it was Takigawa that took advantage of Vancouver's slow start by taking the lead after just two minutes.

Undeterred, the Whitecaps settled down after the opening exchanges and leveled matters on 14 minutes. Sahil Sandhu finished Kevin Cobby's fine cross following a good passing sequence from the traveling Canadian side.

Nine minutes later, Russell gave Residency the lead following a Whitecaps corner. The Mount Vernon, Iowa, native headed the set-piece home to make it 2-1 to Vancouver at halftime.

Though the technically gifted Takigawa side were quick and physical, the Whitecaps took control of the friendly contest in the second half and had numerous chances to score more goals, especially from several breakaway opportunities.

They extended their lead on the hour mark, as Russell converted his second goal of the game before substitute Russell Teibert capped Monday's win with a fourth goal on 80 minutes.

The 'Caps second-half performance from proved pivotal in the result, as the entire Residency team contributed to what was another good day on the pitch in Japan.

Niendorf's squad will now prepare for the third game of their Japanese tour on Wednesday, as they meet the U-19 side of J.League Division One club Kyoto Sanga.

i know this comment belongs more in the U20 threads than this thread but considering how impressive Randy was on this tour, you would have to believe that he would deserve SERIOUS consideration as a starting striker for the MNT U20s.

At the Switzerland camp last month, he seemed to be rated below Haber on Fonseca's depth chart (he only came in as a sub in both games).

I'm not looking to criticize coach Fonseca but just state the obvious that it would seem Edwini-Bonsu is further along as a striker than Haber (especially considering that Marcus has not been able to find any club that he can stick with and is now back in BC)

I'm thinking Randy has a real playing chemistry with his Caps team mates that hasn't developed yet at the U20 MNT level. With more than 2 goals a game you've got to have him play serious amounts of time.

This type of performance is amazing. I can't remember when the last time someone scored 11 goals in 5 games. What a roll to be on! [8D]

I'm also getting excited about Edwini-Bonsu. But let's not get carried away.

When a team overmatches their opponent, they win. And the quality isn't close, they win big. Someone needs to get the goals. The fact that Randy got most of them just tells me he is the best striker on the Caps residency team. It doesn't say anything about how he stacks up against other Canadian strikers, including those playing in Europe or even Haber.

The thing I noticed about Randy in the few senior teams appearances is his decision making. Against the more experinced USL defenders he was still back them up by running at them. However, randy shoots himself in the foot when he doesn't know where to go with ball. When he gets the ball on the run he's lightning quick. However, in the USL that quality through-ball won't always come. Sometimes you're playing with your back to goal. Whe he starts from a stand still his decision making is questionable. He may still runa t defenders instead of look for the pass out and use of flanks etc. It's something he has time to grow out of though. Kid has speed to burn. Something the Caps haven't had up front since Joey Gjertsen, and Joey was fast but not a speedster like Bonsu.

Whitecaps: Soccer on the brain pays off

He thinks! He scores!

By Marc Weber December 17, 2008 10:01 AM

Randy Edwini-Bonsu credits 10 minutes for his 11 goals.

The Whitecaps residency program's diminutive dynamo -- who will play for the senior 'Caps this coming season -- scored a stunning 11 times as the squad piled up a 5-0-0 record on their recent tour of Japan.

Before the trip, program director and head coach Thomas Niendorf talked to Edwini-Bonsu about being more focussed for 90 minutes.

So the Ghana-born forward brought back a mental preparation method he'd last used at the under-14 level: 10 minutes of visualization.

Three hat tricks and several turned heads later, he's sticking with it.

"Ten minutes to train my brain, I haven't done that in a long time," he said. "I tried bringing it back to see how it goes and it worked. I just couldn't stop scoring.

"Usually I can't last a whole 90 minutes with the right mindset. I start off slow, or start quick and drop off at the end.

"Thomas put a lot of pressure on me, he said the younger guys look up to me and everything I do talks to them. I think I've developed a lot with my abilities, and I've developed mentally."

Niendorf didn't have enough good things to say about his side, which adjusted to the quick, technical Japanese style and knocked off three under-19 J-League first division teams. And he was elated by Edwini-Bonsu's performance, calling it a key moment of growth for the 18-year-old who only took up organized soccer when he moved to Edmonton at age 12.

"I can truly say after this trip that Randy has matured," said Niendorf, noting that the knock on Edwini-Bonsu was a need to remind him to work.

"He has grown out of this. He wasn't just scoring goals, he was very busy on the field, he was consistent with his performance, not just having moments."

At just 5-foot-5 and 140 pounds, Edwini-Bonsu relies largely on his speed and a well-timed through-ball to generate chances. He played 36 minutes in four appearances for the Whitecaps' men last season, but practised with them for much of the season.

The transition, he said, will be easier because of that.

"The style is different; we [residency] play with a diamond midfield and they are more direct," he said, "but you have to adjust quickly, and I'm excited to see what I can do."

He could also be part of Canada's under-20 team heading to the March CONCACAF championship with an eye on the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Edwini-Bonsu wasn't selected by Tony Fonseca to this week's Florida camp, but he attended the previous Canadian camp in Switzerland.

"Tony ensured me that he was pretty satisfied with what he saw from Randy on the last trip, and he's looking at as many players as he can," said Niendorf. "I think Randy has a good status on the U20s."

No doubt Fonseca has read the statistics from Japan and that can only help. Edwini-Bonsu's dominance was such that he attracted serious interest from at least one J-League first division team.

"I've never really thought about playing in Japan," he said, "but I'd play there. They pay pretty good money and the soccer is good. We went to a game and the whole city was into it. Just a great atmosphere, like you see with Manchester United."

I would love to see the residency play in the Remes Cup in Poland went there last year it was a blast. I even managed to get Podolski's autograph while he was visiting. Last year there were 11countires that took part and 264teams. Quick fast pace action and cheap enrollment price.
