CoachRich
Sure hope she did her budget & got a commitment from the CSA BOD otherwise it's going to be a battle off the field for her. Notice no mention of contract length. Anyone got some info? ------------- Canadian Soccer Association • l’Association canadienne de soccer Media Release • Communiqué For Immediate Release / Pour diffusion immédiate - For more information please contact: Pour toutes autres informations, veuillez contacter : Richard Scott - 613.237.4580 x237 / 613.818.0305 La version française est ci-dessous -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Carolina Morace named new women's head coach The Canadian Soccer Association announced today the hiring of Carolina Morace as head coach of the women’s national program. Mrs. Morace, who was unveiled today at a press conference in Toronto, assumes control immediately before the team’s two-week camp in California which begins this Sunday. “We have embarked on a new era in women’s soccer in Canada,” says Canadian Soccer Association General Secretary Peter Montopoli. “Coach Carolina Morace’s hiring underlies our determination to put forth one of the best programs in the world. Mrs. Morace has but one direction: to lead Canada to victory.” Mrs. Morace inherits a Canadian team that came within an extra-time goal of knocking off the number-one ranked USA at the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. The team has participated in each of the last four FIFA Women’s World Cups, finishing ninth in 2007 and fourth in 2003. She will also head the program’s U-20 team, a team that recently won gold at the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship over USA. “My objective is to lead Canada to an Olympic or FIFA Women’s World Cup medal and to ensure that Canada plays at the highest level of international football,” says coach Morace. “We must all work together to achieve this one common goal. Everyone must do their part in this so that our goal will become a reality.” Mrs. Morace is the former head coach of Italy’s national and youth teams, a post she held from 2000 to 2005. During her tenure, she led Italy’s top team to two second-place finishes at the European Championships (2001 and 2005). Mrs. Morace was also a fantastic player, scoring 105 times for the national team in 153 international games. She took part in six European Championships as well as the inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup China 1991. Most recently, Ms. Morace was named a world ambassador for women’s football by FIFA president Joseph Blatter. She puts on countless clinics around the world and has been teaching football at the University of Motor Science in Rome since 2007. Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and presenting sponsor is Teck, has an all-time record of 89 wins, 30 draws and 103 losses since 1986. It has a record of 33 wins, eight draws and 20 losses in FIFA and CONCACAF competitions, including top-10 finishes at each of the last three FIFA senior women’s events. Notice no mention of contract length. Anyone got some info? She's not naive...she knows that money will be an issue in the short term but I have a feeling that over time, money will be less of an issue. She's been given a long enough mandate to be able to do what she needs to do without the pressure to win tomorrow. She was also given the lattitude she wanted to get the staff she needs. She's going to do a great job. I have supreme confidence in her. I have a feeling that a lot of new faces will come into the program now. I expect that everyone will be fighting for jobs, which is good, and "outsiders" will be brought back in.
Joe MacCarthy
The CSA Italian Mafia have hired an Italian. Quelle surprise! The only outsider worth bringing back is Latham (converted to a defender). Maybe KK, BT and VM will be more visible.

CoachRich
The selection is awesome & I hope it really works out for all in moving the game forward to the next level for our WP & helps our youth structure too!!! The big question for me is where was/is the discussion about where the CSA is going to get $ & make up for the lack of Kerfoot $ for the WP. VPjr
By the way, her official coaching staff is as follows: The official WNT coaching staff consists of the following: Carolina Morace (Head Coach) Betty Bavagnoli (Lead Assistant) Rafael Carbajal (GK Coach) Andrea Neil (Assistant Coach) Paolo Paccione (Strength and Conditioning Coach) As I understand it, Ms Morace will occassionally invite some guest coaches to certain camps to assist her staff. Joe MacCarthy
quote:Originally posted by VPjr they hired the best candidate. believe me, this is a huge improvement. A retarded mosquito would have been an improvement over Even in the final days, but exactly what are her qualifications aside from the fact she is a change. She coached a 3rd div men's team for two games or two years, I'm not sure which, and I don't remember the Italian women's team setting the world on fire. Can someone enlighten me on her Italian WT record? And we'll never know the story about Bridge, what style he would have used or how he would have performed. We do know Ms Morace will do the same thing as Even and impose her system over the entire structure. History repeating itself?

The negativity she endured was unbelievable but she perservered and the club did relatively well. The Italian NT's record was middling but the state of female soccer in Italy is awful. If the Italians had it their way, they wouldn't even bother with it. I'm quite certain that she'll find the situation here in Canada very refreshing (great athletes, huge player pool, women's soccer is viewed positively in Canada, etc...). She'll have some issues to deal with (i.e. our players are very naive tactically) but they can be overcome. Furthermore, she is one of the most respected soccer analysts/commentators in Italy. She has the respect of many of the top coaches in italy and in Europe for that matter. The coaches I know who have had dealings with her are totally blown away. Joe, I know you tend toward being a cynical curmudgeon but your cynicism is misplaced here. Believe me or don't but I'm confident this woman will bring major improvements to the women's program that will have a positive impact for a very long time. I'm a believer that she will leave a positive legacy If she imposes her style on those below her, we should thank our lucky stars because, lord knows, we don't have a history of skillful, attractive football. AlanDouglas
VPjr is correct. She appears to be an excellent choice. Hey, it may even be *several* weeks before we start seeing the "Morace OUT" threads showing up here. As for playing style, didn't she say that they will play "the Italian way". That could be a problem, as I'm pretty sure the CSA doesn't have money set aside for bribing refs.

VPjr
Be sure to listen to the Fan590 Soccer Show podcast tomorrow folks. The show is about 70% dedicated Morace's hiring, including interviews with Andrea Neil and Carolina Morace herself (her English is better than I expected). It isn't posted yet but you can count on finding it there by 10 or 11am EST on Friday http://www.fan590.com/onair/soccer/
Bill Spiers
One of the more interesting questions from the media was about playing style which, I think, was hoping to draw some comment on 'long ball' versus 'possession soccer'. While Morace may not have appreciated the significance of this question - and did comment about playing the 'Italian way' - she also commented about playing systems. She expects her players to be able to play any system and the system she adopts will depend on the strengths of the available players. It certainly sounded like she is willing to be flexible and to try different approaches before deciding on the most appropriate one. She also made some comments about Marcello Lippi (not sure if she tries to model herself after him) but Lippi is known for his flexible approach to coaching and that would be a welcome change to what we have seen recently with our national teams! Richard
I am not a coach but would think that ideally players should be flexible and capable enough to use a variety of different playing styles so that the team can adapt to whatever their opposition is doing on any particular day. Believe me or don't but I'm confident this woman will bring major improvements to the women's program that will have a positive impact for a very long time. Who me? Anyway, the one thing I like is that she looks like one tough broad, something that is sorely needed in Canadian soccer. Some of our athletes need to be told/shown a few home truths. Not keen on bringing the assistant but I can live with it and bringing Andrea into the fold is good. Not sure if she brought the conditioning coach but I would be definitely against that. We have lots of people who'd be starving for a job like that and with the Own the Podium and Top Secret programs for Vancouver 2010 I know we don't take a back seat to anybody in the sports science department. Which means that we will settle that long standing argument here over whether the playing tactics was by product of the players ( the game that they grew up playing and enjoy ) or if it was all the doing of Even Pellerud.
