Men’s U-20 Team

Canada to face Switzerland on Wednesday

For more information on the CAN-SUI match, please visit the following fixture link.

Canada’s men’s U-20 team will face Switzerland this Wednesday 26 November in an international friendly match in Bern, Switzerland. Canada has been training in Bern since Saturday, although the snow has determined much of what the team has been able to accomplish to date. Still, Canada came together for a 2:2 draw on Monday against local club U21 Berner Sports Club Young Boys and will now face Switzerland on Wednesday.

“I am happy with the performance,” said coach Tony Fonseca. “There have been difficulties in training because of the snow. We will try to have another session (on Tuesday) and then after that will play our game (against Switzerland).”

The Wednesday match will be Canada’s second U-20 international match of the 2008 season, the first since a 1:1 draw with Argentina on 11 May. It will also be Canada’s first match against Switzerland at the U-20 level since a pair of matches in March 1985.

Coach Fonseca ensured that all 16 outfield players on the trip saw action in Monday’s 2:2 draw with BSC. Goalkeeper Roberto Stillo played Monday while Adam Street will play on Wednesday.

The preparatory matches will be played with an eye toward next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009. The 2009 CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship will take place first from 5-16 March in Trinidad & Tobago. This will mark the first time since 1996 that CONCACAF schedules a men’s U-20 championship, whereby in recent years the final group of teams have been split into two separate locations. Including its champion, CONCACAF will send four teams to the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009.

Canada has participated in eight of 16 FIFA U-20 World Cups, including each of the last four. At UAE 2003, Canada reached the quarter-final stage before losing 1:2 to Spain on a golden goal. Along with a pair of CONCACAF U-20 championships (1986 and 1996), Canada also finished first in its group of the 2001, 2003 and 2005 CONCACAF Under-20 Qualification Tournaments.

The FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009 runs 25 September to 16 October. Twenty-four teams will participate in the tournament, of which host Egypt and European nations Czech Republic, England, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Spain have already qualified. The most recent FIFA U-20 World Cup, of course, took place in Canada this past 30 June to 22 July 2007. The FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 set a tournament record by drawing 1,195,239 spectators for the 52-match event. It also generated $259-million in economic impact and some 469.5-million cumulative viewers from around the world.

Loyala correct me if I'm wrong but are they not being critical of our coachs plan?

"Les Canadiens, forts physiquement mais limités sur le plan technique..."

No, the line you quoted is the one I translated in my original post:

"Apparently we were strong physically but limited in skills."

^ Straith is a player to watch. He is a defender but has a nose for goal. He has scored a few times for Energie Cottbus U19's as well, in the top U19 league in Germany.

Has he got in with the reserves yet?

I chatted with a couple of the players post game and they re-affirmed what was said in that game report, namely that the Swiss team was strong on the ball and very organized. However, according to these players, the game was there for Canada to win but their inability to finish late in the game cost them the victory.

Let's also remember that the Swiss were one year younger. It wasn't the U-20 Swiss team, all players were born in 1990 or after.

Most of the players we played against are listed in the M-19 (90/91) team announced for 2 friendlies back in Sept.

Yes it's true the majority of the Swiss player are

Yes it is true that most of the Swiss are '90s with a couple of '91s, but we had two '91 keepers, three '90s and the rest '89s

That's not that big of a difference in the whole scheme of things. When do they all get lumped in together? We can't be talking about

"they had 5 more 24 year olds to our 25 year olds". Anyway, didn't this same Swiss team recently beat the Spanish team 2-0?

That's what our boys were told.
