And Carroll may be set for move

NEWCASTLE United second string skipper David Edgar and young Toon striker Andy Carroll could be farmed out on loan before the end of the week.

Both of the United young guns were in action for the second string last night in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Whitley Park.

But with the window for loan deals to Football League clubs closing at midnight on Thursday, their quest for first-team football may come with temporary stints outside the Premier League.

The 72 Football League clubs have been on alert in the past week in a bid to secure loan signings, with the window not reopening again until February.

And both Edgar and Carroll - who netted a 93rd-minute equaliser last night - have been subject of interest from several sides.

Canadian under-20 skipper Edgar has attracted interest from Burnley and Norwich City, and Carroll has recently caught the eye of Dave Jones at Cardiff City.

Twenty-one year old Edgar has just returned from international duty with the Canadian national side after the Cannucks lost 3-0 to Jamaica in a World Cup qualifier in Kingston.

But it was back to domestic duty for Edgar last night after he skippered the Toon second string against Liverpool.

Yet despite five appearances for the first team this season, there is no doubt a loan stint would benefit the young defender.

The Kitchener-born star told the Chronicle: "We're waiting to see in the next couple of days.

"The deadline is coming up and we'll see what happens.

"It would be a good experience.

"I have always wanted to do it and I need to do it for my development right now."

Meanwhile, Carroll may be allowed out on loan by Joe Kinnear, with the likes of Oba Martins, Shola Ameobi and Michael Owen ahead of him in the firstteam queue, and the second string having plenty of cover with Nile Ranger, Fabio Zamblera and England under-17 ace Ryan Donaldson due back from ankle trouble.

Speaking on Carroll's performance last night, Edgar added: "Andy had a tough game as the Liverpool defenders were pretty aggressive.

"But he scored the equaliser and that was his answer.

"What more can a striker do than that? He will be happy and he can't have too many complaints.

"It was a good point for us - we had some chances in the first half and didn't take them.

"But it was a lapse of concentration to concede on our part just on half-time.

"We had a good first halfhour and were sloppy in the last 15.

"We're happy with a point - it was well deserved in rough conditions. Liverpool have paid a lot of money for their young players.

"So that makes it a good point, even though they haven't got much experience.

League One action:

MKD hosting Hereford. Ali Gerba on the bench.

Yeovil away at Colchester. Wagenaar starts.

MKD won 3-0. Gerba came in for the last 20 min and didn't score.

Yeovil lost 1-0. Wagenaar played the whole game and made a couple of good saves. Good match report here (Josh with SOTG...):

Klukowski played 90 for Bruges who could only draw St. Etienne 1-1 at home, in spite of carrying the play. They have two draws in two matches, St. Etienne 7 points on three, and Valencia is ahead of them, so they have it tough to go through to the knock-out stage.

Same with Copenhagen who did not play yesterday, but only have a point in the same group. The UEFA group stage really favours winning, not draws.

Depor beat Feyenoord 3-0 as the De Guzman's sat out, in their group CSKA is already through with three wins and Coruña will fight it out for the next spot with Nancy.
