VMSL 2008/09

For anyone in the lower mainland, there is a good game today at 6pm at SFU, with the Whitecaps Prospects vs Westside and Westside just signed a bunch of UBC players.

In the last Whitecaps Prospects game, Neindorf got ejected, but he refused to leave so the ref abandoned the game. Hopefully today's game will last 90 minutes.

I was wrong, it wasn't close, the Whitecaps Prospects won 6-0.

There could be an interesting match tonight, Friday Dec 5, as the Whitecaps superyoung prospects ( aged 16 and 17) who play in the VMSL U21 Division will play against Columbus from the Premier Division. The younger players are filling in for the Prospects who have gone to Florida.

Columbuis shoudl win, but it will be interesting to see which of the young Whitecaps propects steps up and shows they have what it takes to be a pro. Its a golden opportunity for them.

WestVan have moved to within 1 point of first place Coquitlam, and they have a game in hand. It will be a good battle to see which team picks up the $2,000 first place prize.

Last years 1st place team Portugese Sporting is in last place and will likely be demoted.

Likley candidiates for promotion are the 2004 Canadian champs Pegasus, although totally rebuilt, as well as the 2006 BC champs, also totally rebuilt.

Marcus Haber is now suiting up for the Whitecaps Prospects team in the VMSL.

He played on the same SFU team as my youngest son......

A certain player named Howes is in second place in scoring in the VMSL Master Division. Any relation Richard?

Also playing in the VMSL Masters is the CSA Vice-Pesident. Apparently he got a redcard 3 minutes into a gamne recently for slapping an opponent across the head.

In which VMSL division do the Whitecaps Prospects play? In the summer the Whitecaps Prospects (men and women) play in the PCSL. In 2008 the Prospects men were thumped in the PCSL, finishing second to last in the standings.

They play in Premier under the Delta WFC name. Home pitch is SFU. Don't you read your Azzi cut 'n' paste jobs? :)

The Delta spot kinda opened when Randy Samuel left and took over the VMSL Div 1 Lobbans team whom now play out of MAP in Langley.

They may play in West Van but I think you'd be hard pressed to find many players on that squad who live there.

In any event, Columbus 2-1 over the former Trollups.

Sporting finally got their 2nd win of the season, 1-0 over Surrey United Firemen (now coached by Niall Thompson - they could cause some damage in the second half of the season with some players returning like Vinnie Stewart, Paul Shepherd, Jeff Skinner, and some SFU signings)

Westvancouver is alone in first place with a game in hand. This weekend they play against a team that combines the best palyers from last years Surrey United, last years Firefighters and this years SFU team. It features some ex-Whitecaps like Niall Thompson, Jeff Skinner, Paul Shephard and Chris Criveiro, plus whitecap trialist Brad Peetboom, and former Canadian U20 Cam Wilson. The taem has lots of talent but is doing poorly.

Next week, Westvan plays RCIU which has Jason Jordan on the roster.

The rich kids from West Vancouver clinched 1st place and the cash prize last night.

Next up is the Provincial championship and a berth in the Nationals.

Lots of talk in the local amateur leagues about the possibility of the 3 leagues, VMSL, FVSL and VISL creating a Select division where the best teams from each league play against each other, and relegation/promotion battles to stay in the Select league.
