From BBC Football's 'Friday Gossip':

Middlesbrough and Bolton will fight it out for Deportivo La Coruna's £2m-rated Canadian midfielder Julian de Guzman. (Daily Mirror)

Since he's available on a free transfer at the end of the season, this would indicate that a January move might be on the cards. If he's to go to either of those two, I'd hope for 'Boro. At least they occasionally play some decent football and have a young manager with potential to become very good.

Why would he even want to go to Middlesbrough or Bolton? That would be a lateral move at best, plus Deportivo are in Uefa Cup are they not? Unless he leaves Spain for a top team, i'd be very dissipointed.

2 Million pounds? I would figure his value was more than that? Didn't Freddy Adu join Benfica for that amount. I would have guessed JDG was anywhere from 4-6.

The money and exposure is far higher in the Premier League than in any other league in the world, unless you're playing at one of the select few top clubs in Spain, Italy, or Germany. The fact that clubs would be willing to pay 2 million pounds for a player six months away from being available on a free transfer says a lot about the regard that JDG is currently being held in.

You hit the nail on the head. Deportivo aren't exactly a powerful team in Spain anymore. I'm willing to bet Bolton or 'Boro can pay Julian more. Plus there is always the chance of being coveted by one of the better EPL teams once you are there.

Also, Deportivo being in the UEFA Cup this season is meaningless. How many times have they been in Euro Competition in recent years? They even had to qualify this year through the now defunct Intertoto Cup.

Exactly, Middlesbrough and Bolton are the types of teams that players can really kick off at. Just in the past couple years, Anelka, Ben Haim for example moved on to Chelsea from Bolton. Viduka moved to Newcastle from Middlesbrough. Newcastle despite being losers are actually a big club and talented team.

2 million pounds is actually a bit pricey for a guy who can be signed for free come January. Basically paying 2 million pounds for not even 5 months of football from De Guzman. If he were on a say 4 year deal I think he could get 6-8 million.

If he is purchased by either club they would sign him to a new contract. Also, come January he would be free to sign anywhere outside Spain with the aim of joining the team he signs with in the summer. Maybe 'Boro and Bolton are desperate to get him?

^He's talking about a Bosman. Julian can sign with anybody outside Spain on January 1. Boro would only pay the 2m to ensure they secured his signature before that date. It allows the club a better negotiation, without external pressure to bid up the contract.

This might sound insane, but I think Julian would fit in very well with Arsenal. They need a box to box midfielder with a high work rate. He would be more than an adequate replacement for Flamini, who they are missing a lot IMHO. Of course, Arsene will only sign player who are 8 eight years old or younger.

You are right that he would probably be paid more in the EPL, but that is an unfair comment as he is still on his first and probably overly low contract at Depor. They will offer him considerably more to stay, I am sure, Lotina likes him and he is an important piece on the team. But probably not as much as he'd be paid in England.

Depor has been a regular in UEFA and was in Champions years ago. Since they had the best end of season in La Liga last year, and this year are sixth, their prospects are good. Perhaps their new policy of modest signings and building young players will work. My view is that they are one strong striker and maybe another attacking mid away from a possible Champions spot as they are very well coached.

As a Canada fan, I would be disappointed to see Julian go to Middlesborough (the better option of the two) or Bolton. Deportivo, from my limited exposure to their play, is a far more technical side - as most "average" sides from Spain seem to be versus their English counterparts - and this recent qualifying cycle has demonstrated how few players we (Canada) have who can actually play a technical, posession oriented game. With Radz retiring, we are down to what, maybe five players (JdG, Hutch, Kluka, Friend, probably Imhoff and an aging Diesel), who can truely play a posession game against an organized and motivated team. Of course, Julian is a professional player and is certainly entitled to maximize his earning potential so more power to him from that perspective.

Check out the actual piece from the Mirror. It claims Julian wants to leave due to racial abuse.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/2008/11/14/middlesbrough-line-up-2m-move-for-julian-de-guzman-115875-20894141/

I seriously doubt that has any basis. If Julian has made comments that he does not like to hear it, that seems logical, as most of the black players get it and hear it in Spain. Especially in some places, unfortunately in spots like Getafe, Zaragoza, Valladolid.

But I don't believe he would choose to leave because of racial abuse, that is an invention of the English press, who are on this campaign against Spain, partially justified and partially fabricated, on the racism issue.
