MLSE give the green light to acquire a DP

Does the economic downturn which is likely to drive the price of players down from this point on expand the pool of players that TFC might be able to sign? Or do the same economics limit what they would want to spend outside of the cap in any case and keep the pool relatively the same???

^ With the flood of former Newcastle players thanks to John Carver, Owen as DP is probably as good a guess as any.

Also he's an oft-injured, perennially-overrated poster boy, which seems to be the prerequisite for MLS DPs (Becktoria, Ljundberg)

The Latin American DPS and internationals have worked out a bit better perhaps. You need an image, but you also need someone who can really play.

Probably what TFC needs is a talented defensive mid with a bit of offence, a team leader, but what do the real fans think? I know you would prefer a killer striker, but it is hard to figure out who to get and the better ones tend to have good contacts elsewhere.

I think MLS is a bad move for older players with injury problems. The league is blatantly more physical than any major top flight league in Europe, and the referees are horrible at protecting star players. I think it's been the experience of every import player that they leave the pitch with a lot more bruises than they're used to.

It will interesting to see whether TFC is selective about finding a DP who can help them, or if they just throw money at the biggest name who's interested.

pavel nedved at tfc is much more intrigeing than michael owen

Good one, anyone who saw him last week vs. Real Madrid (I also saw the Chievo away win) would have been surprised. He is a great leader on the field, great pace, all over the place, a fine overall talent. But since he has a chance to win another league and a Champions (very reasonable options I'd say), why would he want to go to TFC? Only for money?

I’ll throw this name out there - Hugo Leal. He’s 28 years old and is a creative mid. In his younger days he was to be the next Rui Costa. He’s played for Benfica, Atlético Madrid, PSG, FC Porto, and a few other Portuguese clubs. I think he may have just signed for Trofense in the Portuguese Liga Sagres. He’s a good age for MLS and even think he could sign for less than DP money.
