Massive Attack
Nice find. Interesting news. Hopefully this will mean access to non-TFC MLS games in Canada.

squizz1402635577
Oh, goodie. Maybe a quarter of TFC's games will now be on a specialty channel that people need to pay extra for.
Free kick
What makes this news interesting is that it was already mentioned here on this very forum ( about one to two years ago ) that this was something that MLSEL was already contemplating back them. Cant recall by whom nor can I recall how much was mere speculation
Johnnie Monster
Hmmm. Remember when Don Garber said he was talking to MLSE about developing a national TV strategy for TFC and other potential Canadian MLS entries? Maybe the acquisition of Gol TV is part of that. If Vancouver and/or Montreal get in and partner with TFC on this, all three cities could generate content for the network. Example: The Caps used to produce a weekly show comprised of highlights packages, player features and USL news. Basically the same stuff seen on the TFC TV site. It ran for a couple of years, but it was generally shown on Shaw Cable (public access TV) so viewership was virtually nil. Vancouver & Montreal could both supply MLSE with this kind of content in addition to match coverage (we'd have at least 2, sometimes 3 Canadian matches per week). That, along with the existing Euro & SA programming & coverage, would make for a great pay cable channel.

It would be a departure from the way Raptors & Leafs TV operate, but there would be good reasons for it to be different.

Free kick
As mentioned in the piece, Tannebaum is the principle shareholder of Insight sports ( which owns GOLTV )and also sits on its board. They also own the Fishing network, NHL Network, Gretzky.com, and Grand slam curling. http://www.insightsports.com/about.php http://www.insightsports.com/properties.php
masster
Could you image watching a Whitecaps game on TFC TV? A bit ironic don't you think? If they want this to be a national network, they better think about not adopting that name.
tmcmurph
Leverage and a fallback plan! When Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver approach CTV, CBC etc about broadcasting games the fallback is always "we can show all the games on GolTV". This gives MLSE/Kerfoot/Saputo some minor leverage in dealing with the national broadcasters and a fallback plan. If CBC agrees and shows promotes the games nationwide great. If not then MKS can still tell MLS "we have a broadcast agreement to show all our games". That's my 2 cents on the reasoning and possibilities! TFC07
I don't mind MLSE buys GolTV and make it into TFCTV, but I hope they don't show Montreal and Vancouver games though. I rather watch TFC and European games over Montreal, Vancouver or MLS games in general.
piltdownman
I would rather it be banded BMOSoccer TV if it is going to have Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver Coverage.

I wouldn't diminishthe number of Euro matches on GolTV, but if MLSE buys it, I'd fully expect to see at least a lot more MLS coverage (as in matches not involving TFC), if not some USL as well. We need MORE of the local product available to the public. I'm positive that MLSE recognizes the need for MLS as a whole to be more accessible and familiar to the public, in order to further grow their own TFC brand. Johnnie Monster
As it stands, GolTV could do with more Canadian coverage and less crap from the Honduran and Ecuadorean third divisions. Lots of room for Vancouver, Toronto & Montreal content.

GolTV is only station in Canada that shows La Liga games. I don't want MLSE buying GolTV, then reducing La Liga games to show MLS games where there's hardly any interest in GTA besides TFC for MLS. Yeah, and it's host Charlie Fudgenuts didn't know a thing about the sport. No wonder he's now doing the local sports for CBC.
Massive Attack
The one thing that worries me is that the CRTC is allowing more freedom to cable sports channels. If MLSE is buying Gol TV with the idea of turning it into a channel that competes with TSN or Sportsnet, soccer fans will most likely lose. But if they turn it into an even better soccer channel by keeping the current content and including TFC, MLS, USL and other domestic games it will turn into the ultimate soccer channel in this country. As for naming, I think they should keep the same name.

ubuntu
So La Liga and Bundesliga between September and May and USL between end of April till September. I think there's place for all of them and there's still place for south american (why not brasil?) and even collegian football.
RustyTWH
I wouldn't worry about losing euro or sa soccer on goltv. this weekend's schedule, as an example, had lots of space. There were a few great games (boca v san lorenzo!) but a large number of hours of fluff like John Cleese's "the art of football". His comparison of supporters to 14th century monks was worth a giggle but a montage of coaches raising their hands to their faces could easily have been improved by showing us the NRB v HOU western final. i heard somewhere that setanta is buying more epl so that leaves quite a gap by my math. lots of hours to fill with mls and usl not to mention concacaf championship and WC qualifying games. i only ask that we pleeeeeeeeeze do not use those dreadful espn announcers who like to compare our beautiful game to baseball and other such travesties.
