VPjr
I missed the live broadcast of the show last Thursday so i just listened to it on demand. I think there is a little for everyone who visits this site: - John Limniatis talks about the Impact and the CSA - Rohann Ricketts talks TFC, David Beckham, and other things - Cary Kaplan of the CSL talking about the finals and possible expansion. its a good listen...here's the link http://www.fan590.com/onair/soccer/media.jsp?content=20081023_215220_18184
Fort York Redcoat1555362293
Limniatis talked sense but I'd like to see him with another year experience in Champions league before he's handed the keys to the Men's national team. The CSL must fight tooth and nail to keep as many teams in their league as they can in this time of growth of our sport. London City turning PDL means the CSL needs a replacement. Agreed- after listening to the show I like him even more. Level headed guy, good with the media. But I also think another few years coaching Montreal would be good for him. I know that a group in London has been granted a PDL franchise but I understood it was a completely different group from London City and the Gauss family. A new group from London bought a PDL franchise. What I'm curious to know is if the people from North London (not exactly best friends with London City) are involved in the PDL program. I think its possible that there will be 14 teams in CSL next year. However, if it was my league, I'd prefer to see them suspend both London City (for not fielding a competitive team and having unqualified people running the team) and Windsor (for inexcusably showing up at games without enough players or without a coach). I'd rather have 12 well run clubs than 14 clubs with 2-3 really weak sisters. What I found most interesting during the Kaplan interview was that Kaplan mentioned that TFC might fill their CSL squad with "older" players. what that entails exactly, I'm curious to see but it seems that TFC management see the value in a proper reserve team getting regular game action in a competitive league (I truly believe that the CSL is a better quality league than the MLS reserve league and TFC's youth would benefit tremendously from playing week in/week out in the CSL)
jpg75
MLS mandates that teams have U18 and U16 teams, but couldn't TFC start an additional age group sqaud (say U20's) and use players from both to compete in the CSL? I wonder if MLS would recognize the older squad and allow TFC to sign players to DEV deals if even 1 year of service was post-U18?
Guest ccopela
I think TFC Academy (u-18) had at least 1 player play for them last year that wasn't under 18. Lloyd Grist played at least 1 game for TFCA and for the reserves. He's a player from Wales, I don't know anything else about him. I think that TFC are trying to decide what to do with players who are no longer u-18 next year, which is where the comment about using older players most likely comes from. Toronto Ruffrider
I know this has probably been debated a bit, but what if TFC fielded teams in both the PDL and the CSL? TFC could field its u-18 team in the PDL while fielding its reserve squad in the adult league (CSL). Would this be feasible?

Given it is probably an 11 hour round trip for Windsor to play most of their away games and many/most of the players and coaches involved will have regular jobs to hold down and relationships/marriages to maintain as well the problems shouldn't come as a huge shock. The Border Stars will no doubt go the way of the Windsor Wheels eventually. City are able to linger like a bad smell because London is close enough to Toronto to make it doable on a sustained basis for a small subset of the top amateur players in the London area but will never be successful because most opt to play for top WOSL teams like AEK, Croatia, Benfica and Portuguese instead. If the CSL were ever to usher the Gauss family to the exit I suspect it might be a long time before anyone else in London would take it on. People scoff at PDL for using so many NCAA scholarship players but it probably is the best way to operate a team at a quasi-pro level that does a lot of traveling between cities in a similar sort of way to how junior hockey works on a provincial level but senior hockey doesn't. Massive Attack
What happened to Windsor? Did they not start off as a model franchise? Lots of fans in attendance for home games. A supposedly well run team. What caused the change?

VPjr
^ its a good question Massive but really hard to pinpoint. Maybe its simply a matter of losing interest and not willing to make the commitment anymore. Re: Blizzard's comments I think London is an important market for the CSL and I'd like to see the city remain in CSL. I do agree with you that London is as far West as the league should extend. I don't even care if the Gauss' own the team although a new ownership group would not bother me in the slightest....the issue I have with the Gauss' is that they simply can't be so hands on in the day to day management of the team, especially the sons of Gauss. Its an absolute joke to see one of the the Gauss boys coaching that team. You look around the league this year and there were really good, professional coaches in charge of 8 or 9 of the clubs. Then you had London with a rank amateur on the sideline (and it showed because the team, by all accounts, was not nearly as bad as their record implied but they were horribly organized) and Windsor (whose coach just couldn't be bothered to show up at times). As for PDL being the best bet for a city like London, you might be right but I can never really fully embrace PDL (not because it uses NCAA players but because its such a short season league). I think CSL is a league worthy of support, the quality of play is very good and I think that the league has the potential to establish itself as a viable stepping stone league for top young players in Ontario (and hopefully in Western Canada starting in 2010).
