Result of the Sunday October 26, 2008 CSL game between Trois-Rivieres Attak and Serbian White Eagles played at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 5:45pm.

This was a one game Final.

1st Half:…biggest star was the weather with a hard rain starting at the 10 minute mark and the sign boards blowing away in the high winds from the west. Then hail started about 7 minutes later. White Eagles had trouble moving the ball in the gusts. At 37 minutes it stopped raining.

2nd Half:

61 min…White Eagles Alex Braletic GOAL…Braletic beats TRA goalie Andrew Olivieri to a defender’s back pass from 35 yards with Braletic able to poke ball by goalie at 25 yards and elude his check attempt. He shot low from left from 10 yards eluding a sliding defender.

70 min…Attak Nicolas Lesage GOAL…Lesage (who had come in 7 minutes earlier) blasted shot from 18 yards on the left after he received cross from the right and his shot is just inside the post of the top left of net with goalie Dan Pelc guarding center of net.

1st Half Silver Goal Overtime (15 minutes)

95 min…White Eagles Sasa Viciknez GOAL…Viciknez 25 yard freekick from slightly right of net bends into right corner of net deflecting off the underside of the bar and bouncing over the line.

103 min…Attak Jean-Phillipe Etienne GOAL…TRA Nicolas Lesage run on left has low cross stopped and Etienne’s low 15 yard shot into the left corner of net from up the middle.

105 min…Attak RED card…Ibrahim Baldeh draws his second Yellow card within two minutes when his sliding tackle at the Attak 35 yard line injures SWE Milos Scepanovic.

2nd Half Silver Goal Overtime (15 minutes)

no scoring but it starts to rain again for about 5 minutes at the start of the half.

Do these goals look familiar?

61 minutes…[think of TFC scoring on Red Bulls a few weeks ago on their road game].

95 minutes…[think of Dwayne DeRosario’s Penalty kick during the MLS All Star game this year].

Penalty Kicks (best of 5 chances):

1st SWE Milos Scepanovic low shot to left and flying goalie blocks near post.

1st TRA Massimo Di Ioia low shot to right and diving goalie blocks.

2nd SWE Mirko Medic show is low and wide left with goalie sliding to right.

2nd TRA Alex Suprenant shot to middle of goal and goalie dives to right but puts his hand up and blocks the shot.

3rd SWE Sasa Viciknez GOAL…low shot to right. Diving goalie gets hand on it but ball spins into right side of net.

3rd TRA Andrew Olivieri (the TRA goalie) GOAL…blasts shot just under bar in center of net as goalie crumpled downward.

4th SWE Nenad Stojcic low shot that goalie blocks in center of net.

4th TRA Jean-Phillipe Etienne shot is low and to left and diving goalie blocks.

5th SWE Dragorad Milicevic GOAL…shot is high and into left side of net.

5th TRA Davy Uwimana shot is high and hits football bar which is about two feet higher than the soccer crossbar.

Final Score:….Trois-Rivieres Attak………2……..Serbian White Eagles…….2………

Serbian White Eagles win 2-1 on Penalty kicks.

Attendance was about 1200 people. Almost all the fans were cheering for the White Eagles. A journalist covering the Attak said their fans are young and it’s exam day tomorrow so the 6:00am bus to Toronto didn’t materialize.

Fantastic plays by both goalies (Dan Pelc for White Eagles and Andrew Olivieri for Attak) especially on the Penalty kicks.

This was the third year in a row that White Eagles have made the finals but the first time they’ve won. League commissioner Cary Kaplan presenting the championship trophy after the game said Serbia last won back in the 1970s. (Must have been the NSL days before I followed the league).

I’ll make a separate post of the pre-game Awards Ceremony (there is no separate Dinner this year) and an answer of league expansion plans.

I watched this game with a lot on my mind. Last year the final was a two game affair because the league wanted to keep White Eagles supporters away from Toronto Croatia fans. The game was for all purposes over in the first game with Croatia winning 4-0 but I couldn’t make the second game as the hospital said my mother would not likely live through the night. This year not only is it near that anniversary but my father is in the same hospital, same floor and on intravenous as well. He is now exactly the same age as she was last year. I’ll know tomorrow the long term outlook for him but I wasn’t thinking straight.

In an on-field ceremony before the CSL Final game on Sunday October 26th, 2008 awards were given out in a number of categories.

The player awards were chosen this year for the first time by the coaches of the leagues rather than the owners.

Defender of the Year:…Carlos Zeballos of North York Astros

Rookie of the Year…Adrian Pena of TFC Academy

(Yes he was dropped by that team when his parents got into a post game altercation with players from Portugal FC).

Coach of the Year…Rafael Carbajal of North York Astros

Top Goalscorer and Most Valuable Player…Daniel Nascimento of Brampton Lions

Referee of the Year…Isaac Raymond (who called today’s game)

Goalkeeper of the Year…Andrew Olivieri of Trois-Rivieres Attak

International Conference Winner and Reserve Division Winner…Italia Shooters

National Conference Winner and Fair Play and Respect Award…Trois-Rivieres Attak

I asked league commissioner Cary Kaplan about league plans for next year. Most items will be decided at their winter meetings on February 7th. (Last year the TFC Academy team came into the league at the absolute last minute).

Expansion? African Icons are a likely member next year (they were delayed from entering last year)

……………..Quebec City are doubtful (they were delayed from entering last year)…Joey Saputo has territorial rights for the province.

…………….two ownership groups are proposing getting a franchise in Hamilton.

…………….Any teams West of Ontario are definitely NOT next year.

Very Good Game , Terrible weather , good thing, no fans left after the rain and cold. Two best teams in the final . Bratelic big goals in the playoffs (4) and Sasha big goal in the final . Congrats to SWE after 3 years . Best franchise in the league. Best 3 players Bratelic,Budalic, and 15 scepanovic. Those 3 are the best players on SWE and their goalie obviously had a great year and playoffs very consistent.

It was a really good game. These two teams are the best in the CSL.

It was an attractive game from the beginning to the end.

The SWE had a lot of fan support. Even though, the whole SWE team played well, Braletic, Budalic, Scepanovic and Pelc (goalie) were the best.

This is a very good sign for the CSL.The league has to expand.

All the best to the CSL.

nice to see the CSA giving the CSL Finals some attention:

Article trouble as the first sentence it says White Eagles won 2-1 on Penalties but at the end it says 3-2 on Penalties.

It was 2-1 on Penalties after a 2-2 overtime draw.

Toronto Star had it wrong too but better than the day before where they listed a 2-2 tie and no second line showing a result. Maybe they had some complaints and printed a CP wire story today. It was the league's fault as they list the penalty shootout result was 3-2.
