Depor gets whipped at home by Sporting Gijon, 0-3, Julian playing 90. Their second 3-0 loss this week, as the same problems as last year raise their heads: Depor can't score, and if they can't get ahead in a match, they have trouble holding on at all. Especially at home, where they have problems taking the initiative.

The real question is why a team like Depor, with a decent budget and a history of signing really well, has fallen so far, with so many mediocre players and many young guys with no 1st div experience. Better one great striker, a Bebeto, a MacKaay, a Tristan in his heyday, than the three or four bits of flotsam they have out there now.

Fernando Aguiar played 90, coming off a knock, as Gondomar drew at home vs. Portimonense, their second point only in six matches played in Portugal 2nd div.

I did not see that Tyler Hemming has played in the cup or league this week with Tampere United (two losses), may have a physical problem. He has only had 4 matches with the team, who finish 7th in Finland as the season ends, except for those still alive in the cup with they are not.

Leven breaks out of defence with open space all around him before feeding Gerba in the inside right channel, the Canadian's shot is blocked as far as Wright, whose angled drive from the right is diverted in by Chadwick 10 yards out. Certainly an element of fortune about it but he'd picked up a great position in the box.

Looks like a good start for Ali in this game, there playing him the lone striker in a 4-5-1.

Maybe he'll have more luck breaking into Pompey under Tony Adams.

Night to forget for Crawley keeper

Boss Steve Evans admitted there could be no hiding place for goalkeeper Simon Rayner after his blunder condemned Crawley to a costly defeat at Salisbury last night.

Evans was hoping to celebrate his birthday by seeing Reds regain the leadership of the Blue Square premier.

Instead they remain two points behind leaders Kettering after suffering a third successive away defeat.

Rayner dropped a harmless cross from Brian Dutton over his own line four minutes into the second half and his side were on their way to their seventh defeat in a row in front of the live TV cameras.

Salisbury grew in confidence after that gift and full-back Sean Clohessy secured their first win after seven successive defeats when he struck from the angle of the box with 16 minutes remaining with a shot which took a deflection off substitute Sam Rents to wrong-foot the unfortunate Rayner.

Evans said: “You can’t legislate for a mistake like that. Simon apologised afterwards. In his words it was the sort of mistake a ten-year-old would make but it has given them a massive lift when there was nothing in the game.

“We had a great chance in the first half which Adam Quinn missed and Jon-Paul Pittman should have got us back into the game when it was 2-0.

“But confidence is low at the moment and the fact we haven’t got a league game for a fortnight might not be a bad thing.

“We had guys out there who were not fully fit and the break will give us the chance to get a few more bodies on the park.”

Evans threw strikers Steve Fletcher and Pittman into the fray with a third of the contest still remaining and Pittman squandered a great chance to reduce the deficit when he outpaced defender Jon Bass only to fire straight at Salisbury keeper James Bittner.

It summed up a frustrating night for Evans who must be grateful of the opportunity to regroup before Crawley’s next league game on November 15.

There was no shortage of effort from his players but Thomas Pinault’s craft was badly missed in midfield and Reds suffered another injury setback when Jake Wright limped out of the action a minute before half-time with a twisted ankle which his manager thinks could keep him out for three to four weeks.

Evans rung the changes with five alterations to the team which started Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Havant.

Right-back Jamie Stevens made only his third league start of the campaign, Lewis Killeen returned after missing nine games with an ankle injury while 19-year-old James Dayton, who has been signed on a month’s loan from Crystal Palace, took his place up front.

Salisbury came into the contest having lost their last seven in league and cup while there was speculation that they were the latest Blue Square premier club in financial trouble.

Both sides lined up with adventurous 4-3-3 formations but for long spells of a high-tempo but scrappy first half they cancelled each other out with neither side showing much quality when they had the ball.

In that respect Reds missed the suspended Pinault although they did create the best openings of the first period.

Bittner made decent saves low down from Danny Forrest Jamie Cook before Dayton gave the first glimpse of his ability on 38 minutes when he skipped past a couple of challenges before unleashing a powerful right-foot drive which missed Bittner’s right-hand post by half a yard.

Quinn squandered an even better chance just before the break when Simon Weatherstone’s free-kick picked him out but the defender sidefooted over from close range.

Salisbury rarely got behind the visitors’ defence although they were a threat from set pieces and Crawley keeper Simon Rayner had to push Charlie Griffin’s header round the post from a corner in their best moment of the first half.

Then came a moment Rayner will not want to see again in a hurry and although Salisbury profited from a bad decision by referee Bull, who penalised Pittman when he was the player fouled, to double their lead there is no doubt that the hardworking home side deserved a precious three points.
