Radzinski Plaque/Future Player Appreciations

I for one think this could be a start of a long tradition. So many players deserve recognition where do we start. Do we stick to current players our could we included some past players that didn't get a send off for whatever reason.

If we were to give this to former players it'd have be for significant contributions or the cost and list would be too long (yes, I am serious - don't have a laugh!)

My vote is that we do this going forward. IE, sportsmanship/dedication award, caps award (75 caps?), goals award - 20+ (realizing the record is 19!), clean sheets award.

We could name the awards after former greats who we couldn't recognize.

QUESTIOn THOUGH - who pays?? Who paid for this one? Despite being a mod I don't even know if V's have a "kitty" of cash! :)

I'm not sure of the milestones...

I know I'll be hard there, but... I'll give the first example coming to my mind

I'm pretty sure Onstad has some milestones

But he also deserves a “blunders during crucial games” plaque

Pure stats shouldn't be lead these decisions, but more fans feelings

It's a fan trophy, after all...

The reason why this was special and special to Radz was becuase we dont hand many out. And we shouldnt start handing them out annual just for fun or else it will lose all value and meaning.

so did radz offical say he was done playing for Canada??? The 09 Gold Cup is just around the corner. I want another Cup.

Did anyone get a photo of it being presented to Radz?

Geoff, real nice move.

I agree that we want to keep these thing pretty special or else they begin to lose their meaning. What criteria we use to determine what is special I think can be decided amongst ourselves. We probably all have a good idea as to what are significant achievements worthy of our recognition (20 international goals comes to mind).

As for cost, I know this has come up before, but what about formalizing the V's and creating a non-profit and charge a membership to generate revenue?

I agree with Hamiltonfan above, these plaques shouldn't be earned with air miles. Nobody else active on the team is deserving at this point. Perhaps Stalteri is next in line. I can't think of anyone else with enough caps and/or great performances. Others will be obvious in due time.

Past players due recognition:

Forrest

de Vos

Bunbury

I agree.

What about players, like some of those from 84 to 86, before the Voyageurs got rolling? Too out of the picture?

Yes I bought this one. It's really not a big cost, this plaque was $30.00. We could do a lot more with it too like adding our logo, colours etc.

Some good ideas here. I really like the goal scoring milestones. 10 goals, 20 goals. We could recognize the 40 cap level or something. It's an honor to play for Canada, but there is definitely a sacrifice as well on part of the players, and we may want to recognize that.

When you think about it, we wouldn't be giving out that many awards.

And if we're going back....

Randy Samuel

Bruce Wilson

Most caps?

1 Randy Samuel 1983–1997 82

2 Mark Watson 1994–2004 78

Paul Stalteri 1997– 72

I don't think Paul has the speed for defense any more but he looked real good at mid in Edmonton (darned crossbar, would have been so nice).

Does he have 10 more left in him? He is 31 so he probably has a couple left. Jamaica will be 73 caps.

He is definitely a long term trooper for us and has given us 11 years of play in very difficult circumstances.

I don't like the idea of going back but this was an excellent idea. Radz deserves it. Going forward, my suggestion would be a "player of the year" award that is voted on by all Vs. I know the players really appreciate awards that come from the fans. I'm not sure how we would award it if we don't have any matches though [:P]

lol they already have player of the year awards. Julian was presented it at the St. Vincent match in Montreal

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but when exactly did we give Radz the plaque? I'm a little sketchy on the details. We didn't just toss it at him during the post-game t-shirting did we?

As for the rest of the discussion, I think going backwards and handing out retro awards may be a little hard, but I like the idea of naming the award after someone in a specific "area". Like the "Craig Forrest Award" for consistently being bulletproof. However, doesn't the CSA Award the players for caps and whatnot? (If not, they should... but that's a different discussion.)

This being a fan award, it should be based on less "tangible" criteria... it should be about more than just the numbers, just like the fans are! Lord knows if being a fan was just about the numbers, there's no real reason for any of us to be fans... we'd all be walking around with Italian or Brazilian shirts.

...

Yep. That's pretty much it or my eyes were deceiving me.
