Being a bench warmer on WNY doesn't give her much of an opportunity to show Morace what she's made of to make the wwc roster. She'll for sure make a difference for the struggling Beat. We'll see how the gamegoes tonight.

Heard on the broadcast last night that Chapman sprained her foot. I'm no doctor so I couldn't say how long it will take to heal. Let's just hope for the best. The Canadian ladies will head back to Rome for good until the World Cup. 26 days, guys!

Dalsjöfors is winless with a goal differential of 2/44. Unless they find something up front to go with the back upgrade they'll be taking single points and unable to catch even Piteå who are on the relegation line.

Now that the Cup and W league are over there will likely be more players from different countries bolstering relegation-zone teams in Northern Europe.

The World Cup turned WPS into a bit of a muddle this year with some pretty wild results and attendance. Not sure how much things will improve with the Olympics next year, and possibly worse. But if the league has a plan and the individuals to weather 2012, they'll have three years of solid sailing in front of them.

Good start for our women in Sweden. Zurrer and McLeod played the whole match in a 1-1 draw at Örebro. The home team had 18 shots on target and McLeod assisted on the Dalsjöfors goal.

Meanwhile in Piteå, they win against Hammarby 2-1. Labbé, Tancredi and Moscato played the 90. Moscato scored one goal and assisted on the other which was scored by Tancredi.

Salient points:

  1. Sweden has a comparable climate to Canada
  2. The league runs early-April to mid-October
  3. There are no Swedish internationals on either team
  4. Toronto is over 5,000,000. Montreal almost 4,000,000. Vancouver over 2,000,000. Ottawa, Calgary and Edmonton over 1,000,000
  5. Dalsjöfors is 3,000 people, Piteå is 22,000

Very salient points Vic...

The Swedish women's league (Damallsvenskan) is doing ok, but not pulling in huge crowds... although I don't think that has ever really been the business plan.

Piteå happens to have one of the best attendance of all Swedish clubs. They regularly get 2000+ at their games, which S.Labbe has sometimes made mention of on her Twitter feed.

After Piteå it is Stockholm suburb Tyresö, followed by perenial favourite Umeå IK that are top3 in attendance.

The previous WWCs lead often to a huge attendance kick for women's footie and having had Marta playing in Umeå, drew big crowds wherever they travelled. The same effect hasn't really been seen post-WC in 2011.

Unfortunately Marta leaves a trail of destruction behind her off the field as well. If Mia Hamm was the saviourette, Marta is the antichrist. She's like the collectors item for wealthy owners, and it would be interesting to see how she did on a weak team. It's easy to get along when you're a collection of superstars and winning, but when you're losing it's gut-check and personal/group dynamics and skills time. Maybe one day we'll get to see that, my guess is it would be pretty entertaining.

How is Bachmann doing?

Saturday featured a sort of Canadian derby (Moscato called it a Canadian Stampede) in the Swedish league - Dalsjöfors at home to visiting Piteå (http://svenskfotboll.se/damallsvenskan/match/?scr=result&fmid=1577646).

For Dalsjöfors, a team that plays out of Borås, Emely (sp?) Zurrer and Erin McLeod played the full 90 and helped them win their first of the season, a 2-1 victory(!). For Piteå, Steph Labbe was in goal and Carmelina Moscato played 74min.

This match must be historic... when other have two Canadians started in goal for their respective teams in a foreign league?!!

Both teams have 1 match remaining. Piteå has already secured a contract in next year's Damallsvenskan while Dalsjöfors will be relegated to Div 1.

SIDENOTE: Stephanie Labbe's twitter feed @stephlabbe1 said the following: "Just drove up to the stadium here in borås,sweden and saw a guy wearing a #canwnt jersey waving giant canada flag! #proud"

and after the game

"We were taught a great lesson today. Doesnt matter if its the last team in the league you have to bring your A game. GD game @emme_z & erin!"

BTW, McLeod is in 3rd place in the goalkeeper standings, despite being on the Damallsvenska's last place team, Dalsjöfors. After 9 matches, Erin has held a shutout 3 times and has a save% of 86% (59 shots saved - 10 goals against). Prior to her arrival the other two Dalsjöfors keepers had save% of 60% and 54% and had allowed a combined 48 goals in 12 games.

By way of comparison, in 16 matches Stephanie Labbe has had 5 shutouts but only has a save% of 77% (72 shots saved - 21 goals against). Piteå had two Nigerian national team players anchoring their defense... but one incured a foot injured in game 3. That might be a clarification, though... who knows.

Nevertheless, full stats are available at: http://svenskfotboll.se/damallsvenskan/statistikligor/?scr=ml

Devastating. One of the biggest reasons we got schooled last night was the WPS but there's never any joy in seeing anyone who plays the game lose their job with the only way to keep their career leaving the country.

Dalsjöfors GoIF, the Swedish club where Melissa Tancredi and Erin McLeod play, has declared bankruptcy, and folded part-way through the 2012 season.

The club was traditionally a second-division side, but were promoted to the top-flight Damallsvenskan for the 2011 season. They finished last, and were relegated back to the second tier for 2012. All of the players had "proper" jobs on the side, except for Tancredi and McLeod, who were full professionals.

Emily Zurrer also played for the club during the 2011 season in the top-flight.
