Options at CB?

Given our recent National Team woes at CB, where do you think Nevio is on the depth-chart at that position? He's 11 times capped, is 31, is 6'2", has acquitted himself well in the 0-0 draw against USA in 2006, and has consistently been the rock around which the Impact's excellent defense is built. He was instrumental in the 1-1 draw at TFC earlier this year. He seems to me to be more mobile than McKenna and can get in the box on set plays. Given the recent proof that USL and MLS are not that far apart in quality, and the quality opposition the Impact will be facing in the near future during the CL, does he not warrant a look?

No, it is not Kevin. It is Ed. Ed, who watched Canada vs Guatemala last year at Swangard. Ed, who watched Koeln vs Bayern on the weekend. Apples and oranges.

Ha ha.

I've found he looks slow is all. Nevio gets around well for the Impact. The levels of play sure are apples and oranges though. Anyhow my question is how far down the chart do you think he is? I'd like to see Edgar, but for some reason Mitchell is allergic to him.

Pizzoliti has played for the national team before and was way out of his depth even though he was one of the Impact's best players at the time also. There is a huge gap between USL level of play and international. In fact, there is a huge gap between MLS level of play and international which is in my opinion why many of our MLS players disappoint for the national team including those who are far better individual players than anyone on the Impact.

I have him as 11th on my depth chart:

Kevin McKenna

Adrian Serioux

Richard Hastings

Andre Hainault

David Edgar

Atiba Hutchinson

Nana Attakora-Gyan

Adrian Cann

Andres Arango

Gabriel Gervais

Nevio Pizzolitto

Andres Arango ??? we are talking about the MNT here ...right?

I wouldn't even bother putting half those names on the depth chart.

Adrian Serioux

Kevin McKenna

David Edgar

Dan Jakovic

Richard Hastings

Andre Hainault

And if we need someone to cover at CB, then use Klukowski or Imhof (or whoever - even Brennan) out of position. Anyone else is too big a drop in quality.

My sentiments as well, especially regarding the first two sentences.

I'm not sure where the idea that Kevin McKenna is the slowest player in the history of the world came from.

He played rightback for Koln right on the weekend right? It reminded me of when he played wingback in the 0-0 draw with Brazil at the Confed Cup. It was unorthodox, but for a big man he did all right out there and actually was heavily involved.

I don't think his pace — or lack of it — is a problem.

I like Pizzolitto, but his time has past. We have better, younger options (Edgar, Jakovic and Hainault).

cheers,

matthew

Yup. Go back and watch the Canada-Guatemala game at Swangard in 2004. Nothing will change my mind about Pizzolito

jpg75 has it right.

Both Pizzolitto and Arango should give their place to younger players playing in better leagues. Ive seen Arango all of last year 2007, there is a reason why he was released. I woulkd take Nevio over Arango any day.

Seeing as how they are fighting it out for spots 9 thru 11 on my depth chart (and I didn't even include guys like Jakovic) I don't think it matters too much. Long story short: there are plenty of guys ahead of Pizzolitto.
