fishman
If Canada does NOT qualify for 2010 in South Africa, what costs will we incur? Off the top of my head, I can come up with the following: • Much-needed revenue: while I certainly don't have firm numbers, I have heard that the CSA could expect in excess of $10 million if the MNT qualified • Association image boost: need I say more? • Stem the loss of players: would we see more defections à la OH or JDG2? Would we see the retirement of our (sort-of) golden age of players before the next campagin? • Additional MLS franchises: qualifying would certainly push the MLS to bring in Vancouver and Montreal - would failure to qualify have any impact (pardon the pun)? • Slow-down in the growth of the grassroots: getting into the WC would surely ignite interest, and perhaps compel stronger athletes to consider soccer...if we once again are left on the sidelines, would we be left with the soccer-is-as-a-recreational-sport mentality? I don't know what other negatives come to mind, but one positive would be acceleration of the Sack-the-CSA movement.
Eric
But think of the positives: • There will be a riot from the fans. • Heads will rolled and finally we'll get rid of those incapables at the CSA and believe me that will happen. • New blood will be getting in the CSA coaching staff instead of the same british oriented style of play, we will have variety. • Most of the MNT players will still at the right age but more experienced for sure. • BMO will have grass and the canadian fans will be 90% majority at each home game. I don't know what other positives are out there but the main one as you said would be acceleration of the Sack-the-CSA movement.
Daniel
Eric's post is why we need a "sarcastic" emoticon. I'm sure some people will take your "positives" as actual things that might happen...
beachesl
The more things change, the more they remain the same. We have met the enemy, and they are us. Those that do not know history and heed it are bound to repeat it.

We haven't qualified for the past 20 years, so none of those points (except the MLS) applies. Besides, why should those points be impacted anymore now than in 2000 and 2004? Take the the example of player defections, it hurt us more in 2000 (when we failed to qualify and lost Hargreaves) than it could possibly hurt now or in the next four years. As it stands now we dont have players like Hargreave and Jon DeGuzman in the pipeline unless you believe Jon DeGuzman can still be persuaded to change he mind. As far as the bit about MLS? It didn't stop TO from getting in. All that matters as far as getting into MLS is to sell tickets and make money. I dont see a connection there with how the MNT performs. In short, we have already been at rock bottom for the past 10-15 years. We cant go any lower.[8D] Or can we?

I would add that Canadians' (especially 1st and 2nd generation Canadians from soccer-fanatic nations) impression will continue to be that we can't play this sport. Its the classic chicken and egg situation. To change impressions of our team, we need success. To be successful we need better fan support and our talented players to play for Canada. You could put david hoilett (what happened to his brother?) in that category.. Sure he may turn out to be just another what could have been, but until then, he is a player with a bright future (I heard blackburn rate him quite highly) who hasnt committed to us yet.
