Some surprises in Europe this week end:

Austria 3 France 1

Macedonia 1 Scotland 0

Romania 0 Lithuania 3

The Macedonia match was considered a toss-up beforehand so not really much of a surprise there. The France loss made my day though! LOL We'll see what they are made of now with Serbia then away to Romania in the next 5 weeks. The last couple of qualifying draws were somewhat kind to France. Now they have to do a little more than just finishing ahead of the likes of Scotland or Israel. The fact this group is so balanced means you might only see one team qualifying from it. [8D]

The Austrians are playing like a completely different side ever since Bruckner took over.

They are currently loosing 2-0 to Lithuania with half an hour to go. That group could be quite a fight with France, Austria, Serbia, Romania and Lithuania.

Good result for Scotland away. France still under the gun, 0-0 with the tough Serbs in Paris. Klose saves Germany some embarrassment with 3 goals in a 3-3 draw away.

England eking out a big result?

Iceland awarded a PK as McManus is sent off for a red card foul on the play (deliberate handball). Iceland 1-2 Scotland FT now. Holland hold on to win in Macedonia 1-2.

Thierry Henry just scored for France. Whatever happens, i hope they don't win both games against Serbia and Romania and the FFF is forced to fire Domenech....and Anelka makes it 2-0. A draw in Romania will usher in Deschamps, a win and France is well on their way - it's a win-win situation ;).

Ohhhhh, Kovac sent off for Croatia and now England are up 2-0 on Walcott's second. Rooney just made it 3-0.

Bosnia destroys Estonia 7-0!!

Switzerland 1 - 2 Luxembourg, injury time. Would be the biggest upset so far with Switzerland loosing at home to Luxembourg.

That kind of results (and Scotland winning 2-1 in Iceland) make me realized how some V's are a bit delusional when we are playing weak or average european opposition away. Thinking we should always win 2 or 3-0 in Luxembourg or Iceland isn't really doable for us.

^ The Croatian coach and players were talking about 3 in a row (no team had defeated England in major competitions 3 times in a row). Not a good thing.

I forgot to post that surprising Luxembourg result. All 14 citizens must be celebrating wildly!!

Wow! Lots of surprises today.

I thought Portugal dodged a bullet when Deco scored the penalty in the 86th minute to go 2-1 up. But once again, they blow a lead in spectacular fashion.

When was the last time we had such a clear-cut #1 country in the world? Maybe France about 8 years ago, but that might be pushing it. Right now it's Spain and then everybody else in a pack starting about 35 miles behind. [8)]

I think Belarus won in Andorra 1-3, what are you citing here?

Bosnia is in another group.

Of Luxembourg's few wins this was only the third to come in an official WCQ match, as indicated. Hitzfield came out saying how embarrassed he was.

If you had put 1 dollar on Luxembourg, you would have won 66 or something ridiculous like that.

True. It has to be one of the biggest upsets ever. Their last win in Belarus was in a match that meant nothing to both teams, so the odds would not have been anywhere near 65/1.

To put in perspective, the odds for Bolivia to draw Brasil was only 7/1 (and that's probably the second-biggest surprise of the day).

FIFA has eliminated Etiopia from South Africa 2010. Etiopia was sitting in a comfortable 3rd place in their group. All their games will be removed. Etiopia failed to install FIFA recognized leaders in their Federation after promising to clean their act back in February.

The didn't install a FIFA recognized leader like Jack Warner? Surely they could have found a criminal in Ethiopia who would have voted for Blatter and installed him to end this situation.

Euh???

You are really getting excited with a 1-0 home win over Bosnia and a 4-0 over Armenia?

Spain has a quality squad but I'm not sure they are that far ahead of everybody else.

I wasn't looking at Spain's 2 recent matches so much. More at their convincing Euro triumph combined with the complete inabilty of ANY other "power" nation to show some kind of consistency. Brasil, Argentina, Italy, France, England, Portugal, Germany: they all look very mediocre at the moment.

Actually I don't know why I said "France 8 years ago" in my last post. They were very good, but there were other very good teams at that time too. Right now there's just Spain. Can anybody even name the center-backs and goalkeepers of the other 3 Euro 2008 semifinalists? I sure can't...
