BearcatSA
So I thought I'd stoke this discussion once again. Do we go back to Friend starting in Mexico or give Gerba a second consecutive start? What do you think of their relative starting performances? theaub
No one else seems to like Gerba, but I do.
massimo
We need two strikers as it is two games now, and 4-5-1 isn't working for us. So I'd Friend - Gerba or Friend - Occean. I'd be happy with either one.
Juby
I like gerba for being able to score, but the whole team plays better with Friend, I wish we could rely on our finishers being able to finish but really I think our 5 midfielders are far more likely to score in quality matches then the lone striker(even though he'd probably be involved). I'd start Friend, possibly add gerba around the 30 if nothings happening or wait till the end if your gonna sub friend for gerba.
I_AM_CANADIAN
We have to play them both up front. The lone striker thing clearly isn't working, but Mitchell insists on it. I'd sit Bernier and start two strikers.

I_AM_CANADIAN
I meant in general, but hopefully Bernier's absence will force Mitchell's hand.
Daniel
4-4-2, with Friend and Occéan, Gerba comes in as a sub.

paul-toronto
Start Friend. He is only 1 of 2 players playing in the top leagues of Europe. For some reason, Dale thinks he has a better handle on talent and ability than the top clubs in Europe. (I know some will say it is about team chemistry....anyone see the Brazil/Canada game with Friend in there? Forget Gerba, try to get Hume in to the lineup somehow as well. Low levels players might do well against low level teams such as SVG.
sinhaya
I say start Friend and Occean. Occean has been scoring goals as of late. Gerba has had his chances. I also feel that Friend would have scored on the header opportunity that Gerba hit the post on. I know it is a case of coulda, woulda, shouda... BearcatSA
To provide my own input, I think it should be Friend. Since I think we'll be sticking with the lone target man, at least push Hutchinson into a more attacking role in support. At this point of the season I truly believe that Gerba's physical attributes make him really good coming off the bench. I get the feeling that DM doesn't rate OO very highly. Guest Ed
Well who cares now? They are done. Mitchell's BIGGEST mistake Saturday was not starting Friend. I love Gerba but Friend had come off a very good performance the Saturday before, scoring again in his 2nd start for 'Gladbach. He was not coming in tired as he had for the Jamaica game. He was rested, full of confidence. A great opportunity for him to shine totally wasted.
Toronto MB
I think for this one next game we must stick with the 4-5-1 as we need to jam the midfield to stifle Mexico. They are looking very sharp under Sven right now, and if you take a look at their highlights against Jamaica we are going to have a diifcult task trying to shut them down. That being said, if Radz is heatlhy, we do have the ability to counter-attack going forward if we use Friend and his ability to hold up the ball. We have enough pace to hit back quickly. We must use Friend up front to make the most of our set-pieces, as these will be crucial in this match. Once we re-group for the dates in Honduras and Edmonton, I think it will be time for a 4-4-2 with offensive force being the goal.
sinhaya
Here is a sampling of the conversation Rob Friend has with his club manager upon his return from international duty: Club manager: Rob, How much playing time did you get? RF: I came on in the second half for both matches against Honduras and then Mexico. Club manager: Interesting, I didn't know that Canada had a better striker than you. What is the name of the chap who started before you? RF: Ali Gerba Club manager: Ali who? Which club does he play for? What is his playing history at the club level? RF: He plays for MC Dons in England. Before that he played for a B3 team but was not offered a new contract. Club manager: Who is your national team coach? What are his credentials??? RF: I am not sure. (RF is too diplomatic to answer this question as he knows where all this is heading...) ---------------------------- The bottom line is whether we advance or not, we need a manager and administration that will take us to the next level. We need guys who understand the game and the complexities of CONCACAF. ----------- I won't bother

Guest Jeffery S.
Play Friend with Hume behind him. DeRo has to play I guess so give him a wing. That is all for the attack. The rest defend and if Atiba or Julian can get onto to a rebound then great. If we need a goal late you take off a mid and put in Gerba, have Hume play attacking mid behind the strikers. Yes, guys, Hume is a quality player and great pro. What Dale did to him is unforgiveable, I am sure the guy is really steaming at that and would like to strangle Dale. Against Honduras he wasn't able to build upon his successful performance as a sub vs Jamaica. I'm not entirely convinced of his decision making in the passing/maintaining possession department but I think in the latter stages of a match against more tired defenders his skills shine more. And as we've seen in the previous 2 games, the defenders swarm the lone striker who has absolutely no support, thus it ends up being a long ball game. deschamp86
Friend and Hume up top. I'm tired of seeing Hume being played on the wing. The guy can score goals, put him in a good position to get them.
