I always liked to trace a list of champions in a given country or league. For example a list of Bundesliga champions reflects the history of soccer in Germany. In Canada there was no single league, and the history of soccer is quite complicated to trace. This is what I came up with wanting to come up with a summary of Canadian Champions over the years. It obviously is quite subjective and controversial. I would be interested in your opinions about it. Nevertheless, I believe it is interesting that some patterns are emerging where one team was stronger at one point and another later on. Also, it's neat to see what a deep and interesting history some teams active today had - such as the Whitecaps or Toronto Croatia. Most of the info for this summary was taken from Colin Jose's books and from the wikipedia.

Here is a second edition of the list. This time I included the NSL/CSL (thanks Erik!) Now it is really is a list of Champions.

For each year I identified the champion of the top Canadian league or tournament for that year. For example this year the Canadian Championship would take precedence over the USL, which would than take precedence over the CSL.

In the 1910s to 1950s the Challenge Cup was the most important Canadian championship. This is evidenced by the fact that in the “North American Championship” tournament between the Canadian and US champion, it was the Challenge Cup winner that represented Canada. In the 1970s it appears that the NSL became more important. In 1975 and 1976 the champion of the NSL was selected by the CSA to represent Canada at the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup tournament. I used the ECPSL to separate the two eras.

I included North American leagues where Canadian teams were competing (such as the NASL, USL, or MLS). I did that by listing a Canadian team only when that team became the winner of that league’s playoffs. This removed the hassle of counting season points or deciding which playoff spot was more important, which became very complicated. Also, a team did not make the list simply by playing in the higher league (such as the Toronto FC in 2007). This way really only the “Champions” are included.

Again, please let me know what you think!

You were doing a lot better in your earlier versions of this list. There is no way on earth you can tell me that any of those CPSL teams were 'Cdn champions' in the last 10 years.

Thank you Eric and Ed. Due to your comments I decided to reedit my list. Basically, I agree that you do need to split Canadian soccer leagues into two sections - Leagues A and Leagues B. If you do that, things make more sense. I decided to start with the first national tournament that was organized by the Dominion of Canada Football Association (the future CSA) - the Connaught Cup.

If a Canadian team did not win the championship, in italics I included the Canadian team with the best result (by playoff spot) in the most important league that included Canadian teams.

Here (http://canadiansoccerchampions.ning.com) I set up a copy of my list.

Hi Everyone! I want to improve my list even more. I would like to include the pre-2008 Voyageurs Cup. But I am not sure exactly how to do it. I always meant for this to be an interactive project...Therefore I have a few questions for you guys:

1. Should Voyageur Cup titles prior to 2008 be counting as a championship the same as say NASL championship or a CSL (original) championship?

2. In 2006 Montreal got the Voyageurs Cup and Vancouver got the USL-D1 championship. Should both of them get a point? Only one? Is one more important than the other?

3. This year (2008) Montreal won the Voyageurs Cup and Vancouver got the USL-D1 championship (again). Same questions as in #2 apply.

I am having fun with this. Thanks!

Hello Everyone! Here is the latest edition of my stats list. Thank you Cheeta and Raven for your comments/suggestions. The biggest changes in the new edition are the inclusion of the Voyageurs Cup (starting with its inception in 2003) and the inclusion of the Challenge Cup after it became a purely amateur championship (after 1963) - as "leagues C". In order to give credit to the Calgary Caledonians, I brought back the People's Shield. I noticed that (with the exception of 2008) the team that won the Voyageurs Cup was also the Canadian team with the best regular season result. Therefore, when there was no Voyageurs Cup and no Canadian team won the playoffs, I decided to include the Canadian team with the best regular season result (shown in italics). These results (i.e. those in italics) were not included in the championship count at the bottom of the list.

In order to incorporate the Voyageurs Cup and the Challenge Cup in their entirety, I had to include two champion teams per year on five occasions. In 1961 and 1962 teams won the Challenge Cup that still belonged to the old generation of that competition. In 1963 there was no Challenge Cup, and after that totally new teams started winning that tournament. A new era begun. Nevertheless, the ECPSL started play in 1961. Therefore, I included both the Challenge Cup and the ECPSL for the years 1961 and 1962. Since I wanted to acknowledge Vancouver's USL-D1 championships in 2006 and 2008, those years are doubled up to include both the Voyageurs Cup and USL-1 playoff titles. In 2007, besides including Montreal Impact as the winners of the Voyageurs Cup, I also included Toronto FC of the MLS (in italics). Toronto FC did not take part in the Voyageurs Cup that year.

I await your comments :-).

Guest Jeffery S.

Artoo, I think this will work better if you put your final conclusions on the top post, like with the Mother of Canadians Abroad thread. Just a suggestion. Hope you save your findings as at some point this would deserve a page on the site. Let speedmonk et al know and I am sure we can include it in a Can soccer history page.

Congratulations to the Montreal Impact on winning the USL-D1 championship!!!

I decided to remove the "one championship per year" idea from this table, and added one more championship for Montreal. I also decided to add another one for Montreal for the 2004 double where they were on top for both Voyageurs Cup and A-league.

This brings Montreal's Championship count to 9 - beating both the Vancouver 86ers/Whitecaps (with 7 championships) and New Westminster Royals (with 8 championships)!!!

Again...any comments or suggestions are appreciated!

Cheers!

Looking this over again, and great job. Shouldn't the CSA try and sort through this and designate champions based on this or other criteria? Everyone loves to hear about a team or city's history in sport.

Hello all! Today I corrected some of the NSL, CNSL, CPSL, and CSL (2006-) results based on the stats given in the "Stars Soccer Review (Volume 6) - Canada Soccer (Best of Answers)"  magazine.. The stats are on pages 32 and 33 and are associated with the article on the new Canadian Soccer League entitled "CLS poised for a Made-in Canada future".
