Canadian shirt number 10

i was wondering why the can manager selected a sub striker with number 10 shirt , since the numer 10 shirt in international football is so iconic, if u have played football at any stage you know that the number 10 shirt should be for an important player of the team, or a flair player since it is iconic

maybe de guzman needs to have that shirt, even thouth i agree that using the 10 puts pressure on some players

one thing that Capello has done great with England is giving the shirt to Stephen Gerrard, and he said and asked why remove that shirt from owen`s he said that it was a decision between Gerrard and Hargreaves to get the 10 shirt when both available , and he selected Gerrard over Hargreaves

ffs it is a shirt number. Michael Owen wears #10 for my Newcastle, Canada also has a striker Ali Gerba wearing #10. Who cares?

De Guzman's favourite number is #6 he wears this number for Deportivo and Canada. Do you want Dale Mitchell to change his number? "Hey Julian listen, I know you like 6 and all but you are going to wear #10 now"

no, no , i mean that iit is odd very stranged that nobody had taken the shirt 10, and U know that it is the number that any kid in the whole world dreams to wear when u play soccer/football... what i was saying is that Capello did correct, to take off the number 10 shirt from Michael Owen, and gave it to a flair midfielder between Steven Gerrard and Owen Hargreaves, it was a football decision

how would you feel keegan if u have J de guzman with a orange number 10, and also Hargreaves playing w the number 10 for England ?

He'd likely feel that he could care less over something that's been discussed ad nauseum, ad infinitem and very few still care about and have moved on. Not that I would want to speak for him :)

I'm sure he'd think, 'What the f**k is Jules doing wearing an orange shirt when Canada plays in red and Deportivo play in blue and white?'

There's only one J De Guzman...

I agree. Thanks for raising that point because i have been meaning to in the past.

There is a tradition with that number that is understood around the world and at all levels of the game. Anyone who has played the game at any level including recreational soccer understands what it means hence very very few players have balls to request that number. And if you do request to wear that #, and dont live up to it you are, in an spoken way, considered to cocky or full of yourself. Bottom line, you ask to wear that number if you a good ( best on the team) and you know that you are.

That number is usually worn by a player who is the cog in MF for whom all the offense revolves around. The number 10 on our Mens National team is a back up striker on our squad, plays at Milton Don Keys and has bounced around in various lower leagues in Europe. Only Julian Deguzman should have a claim to that number. Otherwise it should not be worn.!!

You need to appreciate or understand some of the traditions in the game.

It would be like a thirdline player on teh leafs choosing to wear number 99 or 66.

but check now

u have landon donovan/ robbie keane*/gerrard/ riquelme/ the spanish kid from arsenal/ france`s problems rely on the lack of a 10 user, portugal/brazil/ even japan with the celtic guy, litmanen/ kewell, totti , recoba/

roy keane was asked by Jack Charlton in USA wc to use number 10, because he was not ready for that shirt and then the shirt was taken back for J Sheridan

You mean Fabregas with Arsenal. Of course all those players are recognized around the world by anyone who follows soccer. At one point in time, many on the list were up for the FIFA player of the year award. The list is quite long, but I cant think of a player who wears that jersey number who doesn't start a match. Especially in international soccer.

Anyways, nobody is going to die or starve because Gerba wears number 10. And obviously, this will not have any bearing on whether we advance. But since these are discussion boards and we do discuss things of aesthetic nature here all the time, its fair discussion.

To me it is pretty clear that the player who best fits the number 10 description for many reasons is De Rosario. He is more of an attacking player than JDG, is our offensive leader and is one of the few MNT players who has "earned" the responsibility of the number. Also, when you add the fact that he plays in the hole in a 4-5-1 lineup, he should absolutely be number 10.

Too bad he prefers number 14, I would love to see a number 10 on his back...

^Agreed DeRo should wear our #10 he fits the mold. It might also put the right kind of pressure on him to REALLY step up since he didn't last game against Jamaica. We need a flawless DeRo if we're going to South Africa, a bit of superstition might turn his crank.
