Metro
This was mentioned in the Candians Abroad thread, but I thought I'd make a new one incase anyone missed the news. Tomasz Radzinski is moving to Lierse SK of the Belgian 2nd division to be closer to his pregnant wife and child. Luis_Rancagua
I understand that he wants to be real close to his wife and child, but do you think he's making a mistake of accepting 2nd division football.
trueviking
a mid table, second division belgian team?...yeesh.

It's time for Rad to throw in the towel, and let a new generation players step up to the plate. This is my opinion.
Bxl Boy
Lierse has new very rich Egyptian owners and huge ambitions http://www.lierse.be/nl/news/tomasz-radzinski-tekent-morgen-bij-lierse Click on the “compilatie” link, you can see some of his more beautiful goals (including in CL against MU... I was there, what a game !), and some with Ekeren, when he was very young, fun to see !
Bxl Boy
And when you read the reactions under the article on the Lierse website, people are very very happy with him ! They all congratulate the club manager for such a wonderful transfer
Keegan
Awful news. Radzinski loses his automatic starter status with me.
SeanKeay
Who cares? I dont, sure he wont be playing in the greek league but if the guy wants to be closer to his wife and kids.. then let him. When his form drops because of age or the fact hes playing in the belgian 2nd div. then we stop playing him.

VPjr
quote:Originally posted by Keegan Awful news. Radzinski loses his automatic starter status with me. that's an overreaction. let his play determine is fate, not the team he plays for. That doesn't mean I'm necessarily an unwavering proponent of Radz staying in the starting IX...he needs to be used differently than he was against Jamaica for it to be worthwhile. Running laps up and down the wing is not his game. In fact, against Honduras and Mexico, I want to see Hume or Issey
Grizzly
I think as always the determining factor of him playing should be his national team play. I still think he is a starter for us but he is starting to move from a sure starter to a player on the bubble. If his play declines because of the league it may hasten the process of him losing his spot but if not keep playing him as long as he deserves a spot. This is a lot less disappointing then McKenna's decision to go down a league last year, Hainault not finding a higher level team than the Czech 2nd division or some poor decisions made by young players. Radz is on the end of both his club and national team career, let him have his retirement contract.

Toronto MB
I agree with some of the more level head posts about this one. The man wants to be close to his wife and child, I wish him the best. We have Hume, Issey, Simpson, Peters and Johnson who need to really step up to lead us through the next 5-10 years. I still want Radz in the squad for now, and we will see how his quality is affected, if at all, by this move.
maccaliam
I agree, and I don't see this affecting his level very much, especially in this round of qualifying. He is not developing anymore, so that isn't a concern. His intelligence and experience are his biggest attributes that he holds above the other players vying for his position, and he will not lose these by dropping down to the Belgian Second division. Like others have said though, if his performance in a Canada top diminishes, then necessary steps will have to be taken. But only if/when that occurs. Soju
He also has the big D on his side, Desperation. This is his final chance to fulfill his dream of a World Cup appearance. The Radz is hungry.
Cheeta
Whoah. Don't know about that move. At Radz's age "next year" is always a wish and a prayer so being a big cog in a Lierse promotion play doesn't mean much in the long run to Radz does it? At the end of the day the prize, even should it be won, may be out of his reach. Well, if he rips apart the Belgian 2nd what are opinions around here going to be? Don't know. Maybe Radz sees the writing on the wall. Playing in 2010 was always a crap shoot for him no matter how well things go.
youllneverwalkalone
Bxl Boy or, dare I say Mpenza, could probably provide more info, but Lierse are a pretty decent club. I'm reasonably sure they won the Belgian title in the 90s and played quite a bit of Champions League at that time. Radz has indicated that he wants to get into coaching, so this could be the ideal opportunity for him. You need to be in a place that makes you happy if your wages are going to be slashed from that of a player to that of a coach. I'm all for it, and wish him the best. Having said this, I have been very unimpressed with his performances for Canada for many years. He's been an automatic stater for some time and I don't recall any great performances in recent memory. I thought he looked very old and tired against Jamaica and that Hume would really give us much more in attack.

JoeSoccerFan
Should David Edgar be an automatic starter because he plays in EPL and should Serioux sit because he plays in MLS? This logic isn't the way to build a successful team. I agree that his form should dictate his playing time for the MNT.

The MLS is a good league though and has players who play for England, Mexico, USA and us. I am just saying it might be tough for him to adjust to the different speed of the game. International vs. Belgian 2nd division is quite a jump.
Javier
i should retain his position, as long as he performs, he is a class act, though, and he will be important is an icon of canadian football, show some respect, and he stil has it was the best player of his team, ad one of the best of the greek tournament, w big foreign players from argenitna /brazil and the rest of the world
redhat
Congrats to Tomasz, for this decision. This is NOT a career decision, but a family-motivated one. He has reached the high levels of club football: EPL (Everton and Fulham), Championship League (Anderlect), and a Belgian Championship (Geminal Ekeren). After competing well in the Greek League, Radzinski has to prove nothing to anybody. At his age he can even do well at his new club, but really we should accept that this is a pretty good decision at the latter stage of one's career. He's a class act, and we seem to forget that he was one of Canada's best footballer internationally, like Alex Bunbury. (Even better than a few recent so-called Canucks.) I could still see him play for our MNT and perhaps subbed off at the half. The last goal by Julian was the result of Tomasz' play ...

One game that stands out is the Spain match, where he took Sergio Ramos on a merry jig a couple of times in 1 v 1s down our left wing. But as I am sure many will agree, it's not what you've done in the past, it's what you are doing right now that counts. Father Time is catching up to him.
