EDMONTON - Canadian national team coach Dale Mitchell said he won't have to sell his players on the merits of meeting Mexico in Edmonton in the middle of October, with advancement toward the 2010 World Cup of soccer at stake.

But he couldn't have said it with any certainty a few months ago, before Edmonton secured the Oct. 15 match at Commonwealth Stadium.

"One is travel, the other is the surface that's in Montreal, the players, I think it's safe to say, would have preferred to play all the games in Montreal," said Mitchell, who was in Edmonton yesterday.

"I think given the fact the team is going to be together for a week before, they're not going to have to fly right in from Europe and play the game here in Western Canada, I think that makes it a little bit easier on the players. ."

It's the final home game of three in this qualifying round for Canada, which played to a 1-1 draw against Jamaica in Toronto and meets Honduras in Montreal on Sept. 6.

"I think we've worked with the players … in terms of a lot of things to get us ready for this round of qualifying," Mitchell said. "Business class flights, charter to Mexico, where we play the games. … They have accepted that people within the association are trying to do everything they possibly can, within their power, to try and give us the best advantage."
