^the american announcers were all over him...they both said that the 'man of the match' could have gone his way as well...he was awesome defensively...a one man wall....an excellent performance.

it amazes me that he plays such a great defending role for his club when he is so skilled running an offence for his country...

^ as a coach who knows JDG well told me via email today: " Julian is a true Footballer. He has matured into a versatile player..."

With his club side, i think we will see him play a bunch of different roles for the team, depending on opponent and other factors. last year, toward the end of the season, Lotina let him play in a more advanced role and he was effective (too bad he didn't manage to bag a couple of goals when presented with better than average chances). However, I think he is so valued as a holding MF for Deportivo that they're almost afraid to let him stray too far. Their designated "skill" guys have far less work to do to get the ball because of Julian's tenacity and ball winning prowess. Plys, he's so defensively aware and responsible...a coach's dream.

If you watched the game yesterday, there was a play in the 1st half where Diarra sent a long ball out to Robben streaking down the right side of the field, after a botched Depor corner kick. The only Depor player who read the play correctly was JDG. He anticipated what was coming and did his best to run with Robben while severely limiting his angle to the goal, making the Depor GK's job much easier. Robben is blazing fast so people might analyze that particular play and say "Julian got left in the dust", which is slightly true but I believe he knew he couldn't catch Robben so he made sure to limit Robben's options. Robben would have had to beat the GK shortside, through the legs or somehow bend a left footed shot around the keeper. All 3 options were quite tough and the GK made the eventual save on a shortside attempt. Julian gave him Robben no other angle to attack. It was a subtle but impressive play (to me at least)

Danish league action from the weekend:

Hutchinson plays 90m as FC Copenhagen lose 1-0 away to Brondy IF.

Bernier plays 90m (and Issey not dressed) as FC Nordsjælland win 3-0 away to AGF.

Neither Cann nor Ornoch see the field as Esbjerg fB lose 1-0 at home to AC Horsens.

In the end Occéan was the only Canadian in action in Norway this weekend as his Lillstrøm played to a 1-1 draw with league-leaders Stabæk.

I watched most of the game. Occéan was awfully alone up front for most of the game and as a result never really posed much a threat, but he showed tremendous work ethic. The guy never stops; this would be why he is so popular in Norway.

Bircham and Wagenaar starting for Yeovil in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Section Round 1 match against Brentford. Begovic on the bench.

There was almost one other Canadian connection for Yeovil in this match: Andy Welsh, formerly of TFC appears on the brink of signing with Yeovil but does not make the line-up for today's match.

Also, Terry Dunfield has started for Macclesfield against Crewe in a first round Northern Section match. Macclesfield currently trail 1-0 and are down to ten men after striker Martin Gritton commits his second bookable offence in the 13th (?!) minute.
