Back to Basics
Just finished viewing another thiller on rodgers. The Serbian White Eagles vs Portugal FC... High stakes this weekend with shooters playing croatia a busy time in the International Division. With a win from the serbs and a loss from shooters the white eagles could take pole position of the division and Portugal in the playoff hunt led to a great atmosphere. Portugal struck first.... A shot bobbled by the serbs keeper lead to Gomez pouncing on a rebound puttin FC up 1-0. Dragan on the serbs looked quite off form he had multiple chances in the first to score which appears to be uncharacteristic seeing as he has 10 goals this season. It went to the 2nd half with portugal still leading 1-0. Of a dragan slip in the midfield (the grass looked horrible players slipping everywhere and was very bumpy) the ball was coughed up and captain amiral played a through ball to Bailey and he out paced a streching jankovic and slotted the ball right of the goalie with the outside of his foot. Now two nothing serbian fans getting chippy with the onslaught of many "injuries" from portugal it didn't take long for the serbs to show why they've been in the last to finals. Niki Budalic was subbed for a fresh of vacation Sasha Viciknez. Didn't take long for Sasha to make an impact the super left footer drove a cross into Milos Vucinic who redirected it to the goal, the portugal keeper made a the first save but couldn't stop the rebound attempt. 2-1 The game from the beging had hard tackles but from what i could see many cheap shots late tackles where being made. But the serbs not to be out done, looked for a bit of magic and it came from Darryl Gomez 25yrds out opened up and just hammered a ball TOP CHEESE! Absolutely shelfed it. The serbs picking up the pace attacking led to a quick counter from portugal resulting in a corner and Danny Amiral got his head on the ball and it took an awful bounce infront of the keeper and rolled in the net. Viciknez had a freekick just outside the 18 and HIT THE CROSSBAR and the header was sent over the net. I could have argued that if the goal post at centennial weren't square it would have went in but thats just me. Any results from Shooters v Croatia game? Rocket Robin
Result of the Friday August 22nd, 2008 CSL game between Toronto Croatia and Italia Shooters played at The Hershey Centre in Mississauga at 8:00pm. 13 min…Shooters Kadian Leckie GOAL…Shooters Luca Zucal freekick from 20 yards through players in box has flying goalie Roy Blanche block ball in middle of goal and Leckie kicks in the 8 yard rebound over the fallen goalie. 20 min…Shooters Kadian Leckie GOAL…Leckie kicks in 12 yard rebound between a crowd of players to left side of net. Final Score:……Toronto Croatia…….0…………Italia Shooters………2…… Attendance was about 150 on this hot humid evening with mosquitoes flying around from the swamp on the East side. This stadium has no scoreboard. Tonight the east side fence which is the player’s entrance was still locked during the team warm-ups. Both teams had players climb the six foot fence and risk ankle injuries from landing. Camilo Benzi earned the shutout for the Shooters and he had to be sharp on a few occasions. Best chance for Croatia all night was a 6 minutes when Mario Pupic sent in a cornerkick from the right that had Ante Brkic head from 5 yards and goalie Benzi flew over to make the save. Another Croatian player kicked in a 3 yard rebound over the fallen goalie who was injured when this player looked like he stepped on him. The goal was called back on the offside. Both teams had a few goals called back on offside calls. Roy Blanche had to be aggressive in the Croatia goal to break up through ball passes. He picked up a Yellow card at 57 minutes when he ran out of the box and tripped Shooters Murphy Wiredu who was trying to check him off the ball. Kadian Leckie had both of tonight’s goals. He had a few chances to get more and was called offside on most but at 56 minutes when he got behind a defender to take a short pass and booted the ball wide right from 12 yards when he stops and shoots. Referee Mike Lambert gave out a few Yellow cards to keep the game under control. Shooters kept the ball in the Croatia end for much of the second half and really limited the Croatians attempt to comeback into the game. The Shooters listed Jodi Forno as assistant coach and manager as Luca Forno. Head coach Carmine Isacco was behind the fence cheering his team on. He answered me later that he was serving a suspension. I’ve seen Toronto Croatia use this tactic in prior years. I had not seen the Shooters since May but read about them winning league game after league game and beating the MLS Toronto FC Reserves team 4-0 over the months in between. There have been changes to the team since I saw them but there’s a lot of experience playing for other teams. Murphy Wiredu and Tristan Murray played for the PDL Toronto Lynx in 2007. David DiPlacido and Rick Titus played for the USL Toronto Lynx in 2006 and many years before that. Richard Assante was a Toronto FC draft choice in its inaugural year in 2007. Robert Fran played the first half of tonight’s game for Croatia. I haven’t seen this veteran play this year but he’s been with the team for a decade. One of the few cheers of the night for the fans was when the halftime score of the Serbian White Eagles and Portugal FC was announced. PFC held a 1-0 lead (they would eventually get a 3-2 upset win). All going well I should be at the Italia Shooters vs. Serbian White Eagles on Sunday afternoon which may well settle the International Division title as they are the leading teams. Something has to be done about this. if this is Croatia's "home" field, they should be fined by the league for this. Shooters are a really good team. I'm starting to think that they are the team to beat in CSL this year. Robin, did Frank Jonke play tonight? if so, how did he look?
Rocket Robin
Frank Jonke was not even listed as a reserve. Everyone gets the idea that the CSL teams 'own' their fields. They just rent them from the city parks and rec departments. Sealed gates? It's like the Flintstones after the caterer sends the Rockettes to Pebbles birthday party and the clown to the Lodge meeting...and the caterer says "Who cares, I'm the only caterer in town". There've been incidents over the years of cities double booking their fields and at game time they're on voice mail (Toronto Croatia at old Memorial Park)....or letting minor kids game chew up the field on a rainy day before the big playoff game. (old Brampton Stallions team) What are you going to do about it?
VPjr
^ Robin, I wonder what's going on with Frank? That's strange. He didn't make the roster the last time I saw Shooters play either (about a month ago) I know that most fields are not owned by the teams but a certain level of professionalism should be expected. You may not own it but act like you do. Imagine if a plyayer got hurt hoping a fence to take the field? I've got serious concerns with Lamport too (lights not working, scoreboard not working, the place desperately needs a coat of paint, etc...) Maybe my expectations are too high. When it comes to Croatia, I really don't like their choice of home ground to begin with. Iceland is fine for youth soccer but not good enough for a league marketing itself as professional. How can you play somewhere without a scoreboard/time clock? Part of the blame rests on the shoulders of the city of Mississauga. How does a city with 700,000+ residents not have a single proper stadium? I hoped like hell that when they put in the two new fields at Iceland (on the north side of Matheson) that at least one of them would be set up as a proper stadium but no dice. As a resident of Mississauga, it's something that annoys me to no end.
hamiltonfan
VPjr, your expectations are in no way t high. In order for the CSL to continue gaining respect and recognition, they must put higher emphases on stadium standers. However, since teams do not own the ground, pumping money into something that is not theirs would be difficult with an already low budget. Teams are going to have to start stepping up and putting money into facilities. The Charleston Battery of USL I build an ideal stadium with practice field, locker rooms and concessions. Maybe something for the league to think about doing with the large number of teams in the GTA.
Rocket Robin
Result of the Sunday August 24th, 2008 CSL game between Italia Shooters and Serbian White Eagles played at St Joan of Arc Catholic High School in Vaughan. 18 min…Serbian Nikola Budalic GOAL…SWE Sasa Viciknez 30 yard freekick from left has SWE player miss flying header up middle but Budalic who is on right of net ducks his head and heads 7 yarder low to center of net behind goalie Camilo Benzi who’s guarding the left side of the net. 39 min…Shooters Doug Sereti GOAL…IS Murphy Wiredu feeds Sereti a pass from 40 yards up left and his sharp angle 15 yard shot from left rolls into right side of net beyond goalie Dan Pelc who’s guarding the right post. Final Score:……..Italia Shooters………1………..Serbian White Eagles……….1……….. Attendance was about 150 on this hot and humid late afternoon with a bright sun in the west. The crowd was about 50/50 for each team. Referee Vito Curalli kept control of this game. He didn’t give out any cards until 52 minutes and then gave out five Yellow cards within twelve minutes to curb the rough stuff. This seemed to incense one White Eagles fan who swore each time right in front of a group of children. What surprised me is he swore when a Shooters player was carded I suppose because he thought an ‘advantage’ situation would have let play carry on. Back to your sunflower seeds pal. The return of Nikola Budalic and Sasa Viciknez to the White Eagles lineup gave them some offensive power although Budalic as captain in midfield had him come back several times to make defensive plays. I had seen a few games with those two missing and Dragan Radovic as the lone striker and he tired in the second half of those games. Viciknez got many of the dead ball restarts while for the Shooters it was the specialty of Marco Termenisi. Both goalies Camilo Benzi and Dan Pelc had to be sharp to keep the game tied. It was a fair result with each team getting good chances and lots of long rushes and good passing but good defensive checking too with sliding tackles getting ‘all ball’ for knock-aways on the edge of the box. The Shooters were so ‘deep’ that they didn’t have striker Kadian Leckie (both goals on Friday night in their 2-0 win over Toronto Croatia) and defensive leader Rick Titus in the lineup. A reader on one of the message boards has been asking about the Shooters Frank Jonke for a few weeks now. Tony and Cindy DeThomasis (owners of the Shooters) say that he’s trying out for a team in Finland but they’re not sure which one. At least I saw one game today. I had started the day early trying to get to the MLS Toronto FC vs. New England Reserves game but it wasn’t held at BMO Field at 10:00am. I wheeled by the Ontario Soccer Centre as a detour on the drive home because I know they’ve played there before and their Academy team had a CSL game in the afternoon but they weren’t inside or outside when I was there. I could have avoided this if I had an answering machine (no cell phone either) as Greg from TFC staff did call late last night while I was still at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) probably at the time I was knee deep in a soap bubble machine but my old father couldn’t get to the telephone in time. Well more disappointed than me was “AtlanticTFC” who had seen last night’s game and this was his only other chance to see the team before returning to Cape Breton. Lucky for me there was no traffic that early in the morning. I was so earlier they hadn’t dropped the arm of the parking lot near Lamport Stadium (ah proved that they weren’t here neither) until five minutes after I’d parked (some future condominium site with a $4 fee). I also bluffed my way through the gates with last night’s ticket inside the plastic necklace they gave us at the All Star game, my TFC card, and picking the CNE gate with the 18 year olds and a 20 year old manager who waved me through which saved a $14 cover charge. Lamport Stadium is the home team of both TFC Academy and Portugal FC in the CSL but the game was rescheduled for the Ontario Soccer Centre I’d assume to stay away from the traffic chaos in the area while the CNE is on. On the Shooters were defender Jamaal Smith who was the 1 of 1000 players who passed the 2007 Open Tryouts with TFC who was then dropped in that first preseason and midfielder Richard Assante who was claimed in the 2007 MLS draft by TFC but left the team before their first game. The Shooters beat the TFC Reserve team 4-0 within the last month in a game at the Ontario Soccer Centre (oh yeah, that’s another reason why I thought of going there). SR
"The Shooters were so ‘deep’ that they didn’t have striker Kadian Leckie (both goals on Friday night in their 2-0 win over Toronto Croatia) and defensive leader Rick Titus in the lineup." The reason those two players were not in the lineup is because they played in the semi-finals of the Men's Ontario Cup for Real Toronto. The Real Toronto team has a roster stacked with players who are currently playing in the CSL. They are signed with Real Toronto but are used as affiliated players in the CSL. Take a look at Real Toronto roster on the OSL website (http://ontariosl.com/MyTeam_Statistics.aspx) Since Real won today they are off to the Ontario Cup finals and likely a trip to Nationals in October. This might cause problems for teams like Brampton who have four players on Real Toronto come playoff time. I know Brampton is looking around for some more players. Noticed on the CSL website it no longer lists players with an asterisk to indicate they are affiliate players. I would hate to be the guy on a CSL team that gets to play only because Real Toronto is playing.
pfc
TFC academy - PFC 2-5...men against boys simply put...some of those kids have a bright future...however too many thinks they have "already made it" just cause they made an academy team...I spoke to the referees and the general feel is that TFC are breeding a wrong culture among their kids where lack of dicipline and arrogance overshadows the raw talent.. Eric
WOW!!! more and more people out there are saying the same thing about the TFCA kids, specially about their parents. Some of them parents are convince their kids already made it into pros, but nothing is further from the true. As a matter of fact once the referees stop protecting the TFCA players at the games, reality sinked in for them and they started to have a hard time playing men. All that can be change if they come down to earth, get a doses of humbleness and get their parents to realize that the CSL is not the OYSL. pfc
Eric you touched on a key word there 'parents'...there was a major incident following yesterdays match, however I cannot get into details as I am a club official...all I can say is it was a farce... the match observer who is part of the referee team told me this has been brewing all season and tho TFC's addition has helped raised the CSL profile the referee teams are all opposing their future inclusion under their current behaviour... Eric
I just read this, posted in the U-Sector website by a member named "north york", if this is accurate, those parents should be banned for the duration of games as long as their child is involved with the program, as north york put it. Specially that hugely oversized mother who is always in the middle of every controversy as far as I hear, including comments by other TFCA parents. She doesn't do any good to the academy, the league and the sport. Here is the "blow by blow recap" as an other U-Sector member put it: "Yesterdays game between the TFC Academy and Portugal FC was a brutal match as Portugal had won 5-2, with some of the worst officiating I have ever witnessed on Canadian soil, and THAT is a statement. I sat with another U Sector member right in the heart of the storm and here is what went down. The parents of TFC Acad, who have grown game by game to be the absolute most disgusting of fans in the league were ripping an asshole into the ref and taunting the Portuguese FC keeper who had taken it all in stride. One of the older Portuguese coaches kept getting taunted by the parents as he walked around the outside of the pitch and after hearing a slur in Portuguese, turned around to a hugely oversized mother and called her a bitch. The parents just kept getting louder and louder and when the game was done (after 8 minutes of injury time- I mean what ref lets 8 mins of injury time go on when a team is up 5-1 and the mood is more than aggressive?) that is when it all went downhill. As the players were making their way to the OSA Building, that same coach from Portugal FC was though to have said something to a player from TFC Academy. The kid's parent then went ballistic, repeatdely yelling out "Don't talk to my kid like that you Portuguese mother greater, he's only 17." A meber of the CSL tried to seperate the irate parent from coming to approach the coach when the parent broke through and kicked the coach in the balls. The coach then went after the parent and a player named Bah (You may remeber him as the ugly dude with cornrows and bright yellow-now orange- boots that played for Tribal Rhythm Nation in the Supporters Cup, came in and smacked the parent in his face. Other TFC parents came in and hit the Portugal FC players and one older, and very stupid parent, tried taking on a much younger and stronger player from PFC and ended up getting hit harder than Heath Herring did from Brock Lesnar at the last UFC Pay per view. The oversized loudmouth soccer mom contiuned to yell at PFC players and provoked her husband to attak them some more, until her husband got his ass kicked when she then phoned the police. Everything seemed to be over after that as both groups of players went towards the dressing room when all of sudden a TFC parent, looking to win back some pride after getting knocked in the face, went up to a random player, who was no bigger than 5'5 and weighed 150lbs tops and sucker punched him in the face, causing massive bleeding to erupt from his nose and mouth. The tiny player, lost his cool and took a long, wooden-handled cleaning object that resembled a metal swiffer and swing once at the guy but it was blocked by the forearm of the same CSL staff member who had tried his best to prevent the fight earlier. The player then ran around and ended up clocking the parent in the head with the object right in the head and the parent was KO'd on spot. More parents of TFC academy got involved and starting attacking random players, while PFC captain and TFC acad coach, Jason Bent tried to get everyone away from the rukus. I have never seen a brawl like that at the CSL, even between the Serbs and Croats. In my opinion 2 of the PFC players should be suspended and many of the TFC acad parents should be banned for the duration of games as long as their child is involved with the programSimply put. it was disgusting." pfc
thats quiet accurate...I feel sorry for the son of those clowns who should have a bright future (Adrian Penna)...in my opinion those parents and the father of the twins is the exact reason the officiating may be a little scewed...ride an official long enough and he may let 50/50s go the other way no matter how professional he is...we are all human...the 5'5 guy was knocked inside the lobby leaving the dressing room..."the we are better then everyone else" angle that TFC and their parents are taking is going to ruin a program with such high potential... VPjr
All I can say is WOW....I'm glad I skipped that match. When Astros played TFCA a couple of weeks ago at Lamport, midway through the 2nd half, I turned to the group of TFCA parents sitting below the press box and told them to shut up. It was offensive to hear these know-nothings harrass the refs constantly and bitch about every call that went against TFCA. It wasn't so bad the first time I saw Astros and TFCA play over at Esther Shiner early in the season. I guess they've become bigger whiners as the season wore on. That night at Lamport 2 weeks ago was ridiculous, especially as Astros made that big comeback to steal the win. I have no sense of whether these kids are behaving in a completely arrogant manner. On the sidelines, they seem ok and listen to what their coaches have to say. They do tend to play overly physical but that doesn't surprise me since they come from the Jimmy C school of soccer. To sum it up, these TFC parents have to realize that when you leave youth soccer, that crap has to end (it shouldn't exist in youth soccer either and I'd kick their kids off my team if I was coaching them...I don't care how good they are). I'm very curious to see what Cary Kaplan is going to do about this. I'd force TFCA to play in front of empty stadiums for the rest of the season. A thorough investigation is needed. This type of thing can't happen if the league is going to be taken seriously. If the CSL feels they need to suspend the players on Portugal FC for their part in the brawl, I'd also then suspend the players from TFCA whose parents were involved in the altercation. Its sad but at some point, the players need to suffer for the actions of the parents so that the message gets out loud and clear that this behavious is unacceptable. I've always believed that parents should shut the F--K up and leave coaching to coaches and refereeing to the refs. cheer for you kids, urge them to play their best but don't be a sideline nuissance/bully. No wonder people are hesitant to get involved in coaching. What I find kind of ironic is that so many people worry that TFC Supporters will turn into hooligans when the real hooligans are the parents of the Academy players. Ivan
Never mind the CSL, I cannot see the TFC organization standing for their Academy parents embarrassing the organization by getting involved in these kinds of situations. Wouldn't be surprised to see some repurcutions (sp?) in the near future.

I'm curious to see who won't be making the trip to trois rivieres next weekend...I assume Pena will be one of them. Eric
Hopefully the rest of the clubs in the CSL will support TFC's disciplinary actions and not invite the player to sign with any of them. I don't particularly agree with TFC's decision, because as far as I know the player was not involve in any misconduct, but I for sure would band the parents from ever attending a CSL game. Back to Basics
This of off topic for this forum... but ill proceed anyways. Toronto FC only have a 13 man squad for there game on saturday.. This is a great opportunity for them to call up some players from the CSL to bring some depth to there squad and wouldn't be to bad especially if they hold there own possibly could gain some respect for the players in the league.. I'm guessing that they will call a couple of Shooters players they seem to have a relationship with that team but possibly Shane Lammie, and some of the other players dominating the league. Just a thought though..... TFC u-16 academy vs shooters - tommorow at 8 Soccer Centre This is probably the only game i ever go leave my house to watch seeing as i have a son in the shooter academy they played one night after his practise and i was shocked by the game play. I would say the u16's are better then the u18 academy team.. But tell me if any of your are attending
Eric
^ If TFC uses CSL players again, I hope this time they will compensate the players or the clubs for lending the players. TFC and the CSL have to work something out for players to move up and down between TFC and CSL in a continuos basis. TFC has to respect the CSL and the league has to look at this as an opportunity for their players to prove them selves.
