How Do You Become a Voyageur?

You become a Voyageur by a secret ritual in the basement of club 99 in Montreal...first we beat you with wet noodles then you walk across burning coals...then you sleep for 1 whole year in a decompression chamber listening to but O Canada....then you arise to become a Voyageur.

Or you you can just come to a match and support Canada...which ever seems better to you.

A) To become a Voyageur, you need to suffer.

B) By being a Canadian soccer fan, all you've done is suffer.

Ergo, if you feel like a Voyageur, like you're part of something big, something that hurts so often but can feel so good, then you're one of us ;).

Daniel is refering to the wet noodle part...

I think Daniel is referring to the soccer equivalent of this.

You guys should link this thread to 'Join the Voyageurs' in the site nav.

Probably not anymore.

Funny I thought it was Hargreaves...

In all seriousness we should have some sort of informal joining process which should include a recommended donation. That way we don't discriminate against people whose funds are tight, but can still generate some funds.

A few months ago I was reading up about the history of the actual real life Voyageurs and was surprised to learn there were 3 classes of Voyageurs. "In the two classes of voyageurs you have three types, the avant (bowsman), gouvernail (steersman) and the milieux (middle man). Because of the skill and experience required, the bowsman and steersman were paid twice the rate of the middle man. "

So basically what I was thinking is that we can have 3 different types of Voyageurs. Any Canadian fan can be a "milieux", have one cap with the Voyageurs at a home game and you're an "avant", and have 10 home caps with the Voyageurs and you're a "gouvernail". By caps I mean attending a home game and cheering for Canada.

From there we can do other things. Patches for the scarves for example.

It's a bit complicated, but it would generate a lot of pride to really cheer Canada on our home turf, and that's the reason this group was started in the first place.

Sounds good to me.

Like being "cap tied" to your country like the guys on the pitch.

Well I have 2 caps then!

Look out world!

There is one other critical ingredient that sets up apart from all others and that is the willingness to travel great distances to support Canada. East or West, or international, we put Canada first. We do our best to minimize the petty regionalism that curses our soccer community and Canada at large.

The willingness to support Canada from coast to coast. To me this is the most important aspect, and what makes us the only true national supporters group. IMHO, it's more important where you have been to support Canada, than how many times you have supported Canada.

I remember the look on the face from various people within the CSA when they realized that someone had spent days on a bus travelling from the Yukon to support Canada (Yukon Mike-Montreal). Even the players were talking about it !

Introducing Grizzly (Montreal Ultras) and Jack (Prez of RPB) at the Madison, then sitting down drinking and having a laugh. Putting aside the club differences and working together to support Canada.

And that's what it's all about. Strengthening the bonds of this great country and building bridges across Canada. All for one and one for all. Anyone who was at The Rhino knows what I'm talking about............

I'm still sad I can't make it out to Montreal, but I'm looking forward to seeing everyone who comes to Edmonton.

As for the sort of "rank" system we've come up with, perhaps to gain a prestigious Gouvernail patch or whatever you should have to have gone out of country / overseas to attend one of our matches.

That was one thing to consider. I'm not so sure about the overseas part about it though as our primary goal as a group should be getting fans to turn out to games within Canada primarily. Although there is definite interest in seeing games abroad for sure.

Also we should call them titles rather than ranks, to avoid any problems with superiority complex issues. We're all equal in this.

I was thinking one of the patches could be Strobe Z's Killer Beaver Emblem. But I don't know what he would think about that, or how it would look attached to a scarf or whatever.

I'm really on board with this. It could end up looking like the college football helmets in the states. Assign a value to every game based on distance, frequency, organization. Some highly decorated, some working their way up... Beaver logo patch would be sweet
