Iain Hume

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Hume recently signed for my team, Barnsley. i was just wondering if any of you had an opinion on him.

i see he's been called up to the national squad, has he had many games, scored many goals etc...

he scored on his debut for us and looks a decent prospect, but he does seem to drift out wide alot which does'nt really make sense when we have 2 of the best wingers in the league, in campbell-ryce (jamacian) and el hamouir. he does play for us up front

he did get sent off in his second game too

am not sure about that beard either,

cheers

He's very intense, is a good late sub due to his energy, has good finish, and yeah, he is typically at wing but can play striker. He has 21 caps and 2 goals for us, and is currently about 4th choice at wing and about 5th at striker I'd say. He does have quite a reputation for reds though, bit of a temper.

I (and I think most others here) rate Iain much higher than Keano said. He isn't exactly 5th choice striker, as he is totally different type of player than the players (I am guessing) Keano says are ahead of him. Also, of his 21 caps, I believe the majority are for substitute appearances.

I do agree that his temper is sometimes questioned, especially in games here in CONCACAF, as his physical style play is generally frowned upon much more so than it is in the UK.

EDIT: silly spelling mistake.

I didn't comment on his quality but on his place on the Canadian national team. As per the question from BigFella. He is probably a better striker than anyone except Friend in our system, but as you say completely different styles hence why we don't see him start much.

I rate Hume very highly. If I were a Barnsley supporter I'd be worried about a bigger club picking him up. He hasn't had too many fantastic performances for Canada, but he is effective coming of the bench. His club for with Leicester was very good though. I'm looking for some big performances from Hume coming off the bench, he can be our solskjaer (well maybe not, but he can impact games off the bench, something Canada will need)

Iain Hume is certainly a favorite of a lot of our fans. He has a really good work rate, and never quits. He will feature a lot during our WCQ run but probably mostly off the bench unless we have some injuries.

Here's a clip from the 2007 Gold Cup where he scored against the US and really played well. edit: About the 5 minute mark.

Iain Hume has the main thing you want in a footballer. HEART.

He was amazing vs. the USA and really won a spot on the national team in that match coming on as a sub he scored, cleared a ball off the line and assisted on a goal that was called offside (wrongly) to knock us out. He was pretty unimpressive up until that match.

Also very good vs. Costa Rica in September I thought coming on as a sub he had some nice runs.

He has been pretty unimpressive since that game. I'm yet to be convince he's an automotic call up for our MNT but I wish him well against Jamaica because he has talent and a big heart.

Does he play right wing or left when not at striker? If so I'd definitely take Radzinski over him at this point.

Usually, the left is DeRo spot. The right belongs to Radz and Hume could come in as a sub for the aging winger.

Yeah sorry that's what I meant, I'd take Radz over Hume at RW. As for left wing I really liked DeRo in the middle with Issey on the left against St. Vag and the Ginas but we'll see what they do.

Ya, Hume is definately a substite - if for no other reaason than his temper. The unabashed enthusiasm he brings to the pitch can cause defenders a nightmare in combination with his fitness, speed, and danger of long-range/spectacular goals and assists. ... a nightmare for any defender and a tactic I try to use as a coach myself - high energy off the bench.

EDIT: WOW, I just realized my horrible grammar! I edited my post

He became a favorite while with the U20 team at the 2003 U20 World Cup.He scored a very memorable goal against Spain(who had the likes of Iniesta playing for them)in a quarter final match that went to extra time.

i think he is rated pretty highly amongst canadian supporters because he was considered a hot prospect a few years ago...most of us thought he had a chance to be a premiership player one day...he hasnt quite met that expectation, obviously.

he is a streaky goal scorer...he will pot 5 golas in 8 games and then go cold for 5 games...overall, i would love to have him in my team for his energy and passion...he will be a fan favourite for sure....he is here.

^ yeah, i also think we all love him because he is a character and seemingly a quality guy off the pitch.

it should be qualified that those who are saying that he is a good sub, are talking about his role with canada, not barnsley...he is certainly CCC starter quality, but hasnt quite been able to supplant some of the stronger players on the national team...if canada does make the world cup however, it is possible that he will be a starter by then, depending on the form that radz can maintain over the next two years...i dont see too many others knocking on the door up front for us at the moment.

The game vs. Jamaica is an excellent one for Hume, at least as a sub. He does well against very physical sides--like he sees in the CCC all the time--and will relish the opportunity to knock over a handful of strapping Boyz tonight. We'll see him tonight for sure. This is his type of game, and we need him.
