tmcmurph
Scoreless draw. The only goal for Vancouver by (guess who) was called back for goaltender interference. Eddy Sebrango got a red card for arguing so he is out for the next game too which sucks. Nolly was shaky in goal but wasn't tested very much. Misplayed a couple but didn't cost them the game. The Caps had the majority of the chances and hit a crossbar as well. A point is still good but 3 would have been nicer (natch). Wednesday at Seattle and Friday at home to Portland (on Fox SW). masster
The loss of Sebrango hurts more than the lost points. Overall, a good contest. The goal was called back not for goalie interference, but the ref said that the keeper had possesion. I was standing right behind the net and had a perfect view. The keeper was flat on the ground with one arm extended and his hand on top of the ball. Does that constitute possession?
Guest Jeffery S.
I admit I do not know the rule on that: what is considered a controlled ball, one hand on a still ball sitting on the ground? Two hands on it? Anyone know the rule? Sebrango's two yellows came so fast that I missed the first talking to someone for a moment, while the ref was not man enough to even show the 2nd yellow, he went straight to red. Quite a cowardly performance by the ref, typical USL though. Caps played poorly overall and were coasting for most of the match, I did not like this performance at all. No communication, a midfield that took ages to get to the play, no support anywhere on the field. Good solid play from Charles and Jarun again today, and Hirano, Sebrango his usual self, the rest rather mediocre.

Hey Jeffrey, I was watching the whole conversation/discussion and I did see the ref show the yellow card twice. As per the midfield, the loss of Jeff Clarke in the first half really hurt. Plus, it shows the teams lack of depth at the CM position. They had to bring on Trafford, a defender, in Clarke's place.

Geez that was fast, I couldn't have had my head turned for more than 8-10 seconds. In any case, very harsh from the ref. I agree about Clarke, that probably explains seeing Nash trying to play BOTH defensive mid and creative mid with little help from the others. masster
^ It was amazingly fast. The time between the first and second yellow card couldn't have been more than 10 seconds.
Michael McColl1402635582
It was about 4 or 5 seconds just between cards. Shocking refereeing
AlanDouglas
If the ball is stationary and the keeper has a hand on it, then that is control. It was the correct decision. The double yellow was weird though.

Calgary Boomer
I can't believe no-one mentioned Freddy Valente. He was by so far the best player on the park it was silly. Every single chance the Whitecaps generated was through his left flank. If the Whitecaps could ever find a similar threat on the right side, the club would be very hard to play against. Because Martin was poor, Arze was inconsistent at showed his inexperience at times.
CanadasBest
It was a nice corner kick by Nash to set up that scramble that lead to the Sebrango Red Card. The announcers on TV said Sebrango will be out for 3 games. Is that correct?
Calgary Boomer
It wasn't a straight red...it was 2 yellows so they clarified at the end that it was 1 game. Lenarduzzi also said there's a week's grace period? Isn't that what happened to Andrew Gregor?
Richard
quote:Originally posted by GoF It was about 4 or 5 seconds just between cards. Shocking refereeing Not at all. Players at that level especially should know to stop mouthing off to the referee once they have been shown a yellow card or take the consequences as Sebrango inevitably had to do. His behaviour was just plain stupid, there was no chance the referee was going to change his call, he was supported by the assistant referee who called a no goal very promptly from the goal line. Sebrango's intemperate behaviour may yet cost his club dearly in the coming games.

I actually I don't think he deserved the red. from what I saw he got the first yellow and then asked for clarification. He turned around to ask and I guess the ref saw that as dissent and the ref showed the red. I don't think Sebrango even barely opened his mouth. I've seen way more blatant versions of dissent than that which never got beyond a first yellow. oh well....

piltdownman
Also it was funny to see the Southside seemed to get under the skin of Taiwo Atieno. After chanting "Tamworth reject" he turned around and wanked off for us. Not once, not twice but three times. No wonder he didn't cut it in the Conference North. Didn't take much to get him to react. Luckily my 13 year old niece who was with me missed all that. By the way she thought it was all pretty tame, guys, though admitted after sitting out the rain in our grandstand seats that the Southside was a lot more enjoyable. You realize sometimes that kids are a helluva lot cooler than their parents. Thought the PR keeper was very professional, a strong personality on the field and solid fundamentals, sorry to say but a step up from what we have. Calgary Boomer
Gaudette was pretty solid. Still think it was a goal though. I mean, having your palm on the ball from a fully extended arm constitutes "possesion"?
Blue and White Army
Yes, Gaudette had a good match. Gave us the thumbs up after the match, which I was impressed with, considering his antics last month down in Portland. Extremely vocal, which is something our goalkeepers rarely display. But to give credit to Nolly, he was much more vocal than usual last night. Take it from king anorak Alan Douglas, one hand on the ball counts as possession. Can't blame the PR players for getting pissed at Jarun for the late kick. Not only did Gaudette have possession, but Jarun smashed into Gaudette's right hand. Gaudette spent most of the 2006 MLS season on the bench for Columbus Crew due to a broken right hand, so perhaps a touchy subject. As for Taiwo, I think it was just a bit of banter. As Jeffrey noted, he was sticking his tongue out at us before giving us the wank, so I doubt there was any real anger there on his part. Plus, when he turned away from us, after giving the wank gesture, he was then grabbing his ass with both of his hands, which I assume was meant for us as well. I don't think he takes himself too seriously. I reckon he was amused that we even knew about his Tamworth history, in this rinky-dink USL-1 league. I did see genuine shock on Josh Hansen's face for a couple of seconds when we were calling him a "Whitecaps reject", although it did turn into a sh*t-eating grin rather quickly. Good times. The result could have been better, but enjoyed the atmosphere. Look forward to seeing you guys soon. Jeffrey, didn't realize who you were at the game...just picked up on it from your last post. I think I still owe you for a marca magazine that you sent to me a few years back from Spain.

"I've seen way more blatant versions of dissent than that which never got beyond a first yellow." Then they should have been shown a second yellow and ejected. Arguing with the referee is an exercise in futility with almost inevitably negative outcomes for the arguing players.
