LD Taylored
I think it's a fine thing as a 100% privatly funded thing, it's hard for me to say about Football/Fubol (what it has a right to be called all over - the other thing stole the name) when Hockey would get it from anyone but me among other things; but like I said it's better in the long run, at some point ticket prices are insane so a photo op seat is paid for in return for the Government Funding.[8D]

tmcmurph
Okay that makes 2 of us going "WTF mate?". I think he is from BC (land of very strong pot) and got sidestreamed before writing. [8D] Just kidding but I think he is happy with a stadium as long as it is privately paid for. I agree on that.

Bill
Can a grass field be possible under a Retractable Roof?
Johnnyranger
Yes. In all seriousness there are facilities, some that were compared with BC Place when the announcement was first made, that have a trap door, if you will, behind the seats and the grass slides out on a rather large dolly on a set of rails outside the stadium, to sit in the sun, get maintained and watered, then gets rolled back in for matches... I believe the University of Phoenix stadium in Arizona has this IIRC...also Schalke 04's park in Gelsinkirchen. But if PavCo is in control, the only real grass we will see will probably be palletted and installed that way (ala La Galaxy vs Caps at BC place)
Richard
^ The system you describe can only work if there is a full pitch sized space adjacent to the stadium available for the grass to bask in the sun and grow. Can't see that happening at BC Place as the real estate is far too valuable, witness squeezing in the condo towers on what space is available now. Tintin
The only real grass that will be anywhere near BC Place is whatever the guy was smoking who started this thread.

Calgary Boomer
There's also a new thing happening around the world with portable UV track lighting. Newcastle uses it because of the constant rain. It rolls around on the field and helps grow soggy patches. If you can grow PRIMO weed indoors, why not a pitch?

Richard has left is creative left mind thinking ... somewhere.. you put a Condo above where the grass slides into eight foot high space, set up with uv lights.. any competent turf management expert or North Van grow op can set it up... you get your Condos the stadia gets turf... you could even roll it out onto a field turf practive field... Now if you guys in BC would stop smoking up and start working you might get solution by 2012 in time to be in the pool for the next MLS expansion. Richard
Hmmm, I would love to see the engineering design for a condo that levitates above a football field sized area with no support columns except around the edges. Even a system where the playing surface is split up into segments would be an engineering marvel. Now if football were as profitable as growing BC bud then we might find a way but unfortunately it isn't. Dream on fellas, it isn't going to happen at government owned, financed and operated BC Place.
canadianfoot
Do you think if everyone did the same at BC Place it would colapse? Then we could built a new one...
