Chénard appointed to Olympic Tournament

Carol Anne Chénard

Canada’s Carol Anne Chénard has been appointed to the 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. Chénard will be the lone Canadian football official at the 2008 Olympic Games. The 2008 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament runs 6-21 August in China.

“It is a great honour to be selected for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament,” says Chénard.

Chénard is currently refereeing at the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship in Trinidad & Tobago. The eight-team tournament is the qualification tournament for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup New Zealand 2008. Recently, Chénard has also won appointments to the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament and the Nutrilite Canadian Championship.

Four years ago, there were two Canadian assistant referees at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. Hector Vergara was an assistant referee at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament while Denise Robinson was an assistant referee at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. The last Canadian referee appointed to the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament was Sonia Denoncourt (1996 and 2000).

I remember when Carol Anne Chénard, was playing U18 in Ottawa with the Gloucester club, a good player then but a better referee it was good she decided to specialize at an age she could become a FIFA appointed referee, its very heartening to see a young person is the sport advance to the highest levels on merit and hard work.

We can expect to see her doing men's and women's World Cup games in the future barring injury.
