CanadianTraveller
Since this got bumped, a lack-of-update on hotels. After getting terrible rate quotes from the first eight downtown hotels, I decided to turn the search over to a travel agent. My experience is that the agent won't get any great deals, but she can't do any worse than I was doing. I'm expecting something back shortly, but assume that anything I find would be a minimum of $99/night. Hopefully I can get a decent rate at a better hotel to make up for the increased cost. strobe_z
I've got a suggestion that no one else has pointed out. Grant MacEwan College has a residence with guest rooms that anyone can book. It's located at GMCC's main downtown campus, so it's centrally located. I talked to the guy at the front desk and asked if the guest suites were available year round and he said yes. http://www.macewan.ca/web/services/residence/services/detailsPage.cfm?id=4301 There's not a lot of rooms though, so be quick. If some organization is possible, maybe contacting the Group Accommodations Coordinator at 780.633.3623 might be a good idea... -- MacEwan Residence is also available for nightly rentals for visitors to Edmonton. We have a variety of suite options to meet your value vacation needs. Please call us at 780.633.8000 or e-mail us to inquire about availability or to reserve a suite. RATES (please click the suite type for a description)" Suite Type Rate Queen Guest Room $75/night Queen/Double Guest Room $85/night Bachelor Suite $65/night 2 Bedroom Suite $85/night 4 Bedroom Suite $169/night * Surface parking is available from May to August at $5 per vehicle per day. * Please add nine per cent tax (five per cent GST and four per cent Alberta Tourism Tax) * Check out the large selection of dining and catering options. strobe_z
I drew a map for those of you not familiar with Edmonton. GMCC residence is in downtown Edmonton, it's a three block walk to Corona station and a couple of subway (LRT) stops to the stadium. You might be able to arrange for the Sky Shuttle transportation from the Int'l Airport (probably around $15-20). http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=117461877620362533712.000453ebda6633d6ff445
Blue and White Army
Sounds great. Is anyone up for taking the lead on a group booking? If not, I received a 50%-off coupon from Hosteling International today, so I would be able to get a two-bed private room at HI-Edmonton for $27. Only problem is that it's south of the river, and a good 1.5km from an LRT stop (would need to grab a bus).
Reza
If I were to pick, I would go with GMCC definitely. The building is fairly new and the rooms are not bad. Its location is also fairly convenient with quite a few restaurants and bars nearby, not to mention the train being only a few blocks away as well. Blue and White Army
Accommodation: I've booked a 2-bed room at Hosteling International, which is just south of the river at 10647 81 Avenue NW. Including tax, private rooms cost $75 w/ ensuite or $59 w/o ensuite for HI-Hostels members, or $4 more for non-members ($79 or $63). After going with HI-Hostels in Montreal during the St. VAG match back in June, I received a 50%-off coupon for any HI-Hostel between October 13 and December 14, so it brings the cost of the room down to $37.50, or $18.75 each for a friend and I. A damn good deal. I had a look on the ETS (Edmonton Transit) website, and the HI-Hostel is serviced by four bus routes (including two that run until almost 1:00am), and is just a 9-minute ride to University Station on the LRT. Pubs (pre- and post-match) It's about time that we decided on a pre-match pub near Commonwealth Stadium, and possibly also a post-match pub located downtown. I'm sure the locals already have some good ideas...

I'm sure the locals already have some good ideas... The area around Commonwealth is questionable at best, so probably not the best place to have a gathering pre-match. Given that the LRT runs from downtown to the stadium in short-order, I'd recommend a downtown pub and then march to Commonwealth on the LRT... One of the downsides of Edmonton unfortunately is that the stadium area is a little decrepit.
Blue and White Army
No worries, we can frighten all of the locals on the LRT. So then, how about some good downtown pub recommendations that could host a large Vees gathering?
strobe_z
Last WCQ round (against Honduras) we met up at Sherlock Holmes downtown (on Rice Howard Way). First time I ever walked into a bar and everyone was wearing the same outfit I was... brought a tear to my eye. It's a good area because it's central, and there's not a lot of traffic right in front (Rice Howard Way is a kinda side street).

CanadianTraveller
Final update on hotels from my end. After going through a couple of different approaches, it does not appear that any hotels are prepared to offer a discount on group bookings for mid-week in Edmonton. As such, I'd encourage you to make your own arrangements. I would recommend a downtown hotel as the price difference isn't huge between downtown and outlying hotels. A downtown location is a 10-minute train ride from the stadium, and is located close to the pre-game and post-game festivities. Transportation from the airport (if required) will be easier. There was mention of Grant MacEwen college (now called "MacEwen") as an option. MacEwen is in session during that time and has all of about eight rooms to rent out during that time. Feel free to call them to try and book an individual room, but it's not a place with a significant amount of accommodation. If you're looking for a recommendation, I'll echo others in suggesting the Coast Edmonton House Hotel. Good price-value combination. An alternative is Century Casino - lower rate, not located downtown, but it is on the train line and just 5 minutes to the Stadium. (Note: For those driving up late on game-day and spending the night, you cannot park at the stadium, so having convenient access to the train is useful.) piltdownman
I just booked through Hotwire. I got Days Inn Edmonton Downtown for $107 all included. Its 2 blocks from the subway, and 8 blocks from Sherlock Holmes Pub. superbrad
I suggest the Elephant and Castle on Rice Howard Way for before and after. Right downtown and close to the LRT so we can hop on - 5 minute ride to the stadium, and then hit there after the match.
ESG Shawn
You mean the Sherlock Holmes on Rice Howard Way. I agree, it's a central location and easy to get to pre and post match.
