Attendance was about 150 to 200 on this mild night. This game was televised on Rogers Community Channel. The cameras were on the east side so the crowd could be seen all sitting on the west stands. Both stands will be used on Sunday for the Toronto Croatia vs. Serbian White Eagles game.

This game certainly went different that what I expected for these two struggling teams. I expected after the first Red card, PFC would play the entire second half hanging on to their slim lead. Instead the PFC goalie compensated with long punts upfield so the PFC players wouldn’t have to work the ball out. His long kicks would mostly land near the center circle and bounce off the hard turf surface if the Wolves defense didn’t play the ball in the air. This would set the PFC forwards in on breaks with only a defender or two to beat as the Wolves were pressing at the other end for goals to get back into the game.

Michael Da Silva earned the shutout for Portugal FC and had to be sharp to keep the shutout.

Wolves had a tough night showcased by them having a two man advantage during injury time yet PFC Helio Pereira charging on left had had a 20 yard low shot stopped by Wolves goalie Claudio Perri. Pereira then plowed into Perri but came out the worse for wear. Pereira shook off all efforts to help him up, from teammates, the Wolves goalie and even the referee. The referee signaled for the game to continue with Pereira still lying in the box. The Wolves players now ran down field on a three man advantage and a cross into the box had players miss teeing up the ball to get a shot in and the ball just blooped out of the left side of the box. Long time leading scorer Carlo Arghittu was on vacation and not in the lineup answered a Wolves official.

Wolves did hit a cross bar and had some other good chances that were off target or saved by Da Silva but then Portugal could have doubled their score except for the goaltending of Claudio Perri. None of the four subs the Wolves brought made a difference.

At this game the first announcement was made of a Portugal FC organized international exhibition game at BMO Field on Friday August 8th. At 6:15pm a game between Portugal FC and Hispanic Selects (probably an all star collection of local players) will be played and then at 8:15pm, a game between Millionairos of Colombia and Barcelona of Ecuador.

Result of the Sunday July 13th, 2008 CSL game between Toronto Croatia and Serbian White Eagles played at Lamport Stadium at 4:00pm.

37 min…Serbian White Eagles Sasa Viciknez GOAL…SWE Dragan Radovic cross on right from 20 yards along end line has Viciknez head ball in from 5 yards on left into top left side of net beyond flying goalie Roy Blanche.

73 min…Serbian White Eagles Dragan Radovic GOAL…Radovic leaps over sliding defender at 18 yards and keeps his balance and pushes 10 yard shot under diving goalie into right side of net.

Final Score:………Toronto Croatia………0…………..Serbian White Eagles…………..2……….

Attendance was about 450 people with 150 in the East stands staring into the sun. These were the Serbian fans. About 300 fans in the Western stands cheered for Croatia. Toronto Croatia was considered the ‘Home’ team for this game. Lamport Stadium is the home ground of both Portugal FC and TFC Academy. Toronto Croatia usually plays at The Hershey Centre in Mississauga and Serbian White Eagles play home games at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke. This stadium was chosen before the season began because it is the only stadium in the league in the Toronto area that has stands on both sides of the field and therefore easy to separate fans. I asked league official Stan Adamson and he said there were about 30 security. I don’t know if that included the Toronto police as well. They just watched the people from the front like any Toronto FC game. The search was more thorough than TFC games though. They kept announcing that anyone found with flares would be ejected. The sun was so bright I don’t think we could have seen one if anyone lit one anyway. No security incidents as far as I was aware. The fans on both sides sang and swore at each other. I didn’t know what they were saying so it didn’t bother me. No fans were allowed to sit in the first row as the next row is a passage way and that’s where security was standing. An announcement was made that no racist signs could be hung up but I didn’t see any. I thought this was triple the average Croatia crowd but the Serbians with only 150 was only about one third of what they bring to a game. The Croatia supporters were delayed (as planned) after the game to let the Serbian fans out first even though they were on the other side of the field.

About the game itself, Toronto Croatia got off to a good start in the first 10 minutes but then play evened out. Croatia missed a lot of chances with bad passes and finishing. Dan Pelc earned the shutout for White Eagles. He had to catch a lot of crosses and long shots but was up to the task. Good to be tall!

Referee Isaac Raymond gave out only one card and kept the game on the field under control.

White Eagles brought in much traveled around the CSL Darryl Gomez as a 76 minute sub.

I was in the west stands so I’d be sure to see a copy of the game rosters. The Croatian fans jeered the White Eagle players missing scoring opportunities like bicycle and scissor kicks. One incident at 89 minutes, Nenad Stojocic had only come into the game two minutes earlier beat defender Ante Brkic to a ball at 35 yards and getting a clear breakaway shot much too soon and from 25 yards flubbed a shot as he fell wide left. I wouldn’t be laughing I thought as it just showed how the Croatia defense could be beaten. I heard the Croatian defense arguing amongst themselves for a few times in the last half of the game.
