Birth of a Voyageur

My feet are killing me, my back aches, my throat is sore and my voice is gone...but I don't care at all because I just got home from Montreal.

Canada 4 St. Vincent 1

It was well worth it.

Thats right I just saw the mighty Canadian National team in action...live for the first time.

Here is my account of my baptism into to live Canadian football.

I arrived in Montreal at around 2 o'clock on matchday. After quickly checking into the hotel and grabbing a quick poutine. My friends and I made our way to Club 99 where the Voyageurs were set to gather.

Walking up to the pub I'll confess I was not expecting much, my fears were heightened when I saw the look of this pub...not bashing it just saying it didn't look like much. Until I walked in there sat about 20 (45-55 would end up there) other Canadian supporters 95% of them kitted out in the most beautiful display of Red I have seen outside of Anfield. As the cheers and greetings washed over my friends (TysonM) and I we could all tell not only was this place special but that we were home.

While at the pub we met many supporters from all across our great land. Winnipeg Fury entertained me for 15 mins or so with a scathing rant on the CSA about the allocation of tickets. Jordan (can't remember your handle) the guy from the yukon...the friggin Yukon. Not to mention Daniel and his megaphone. Also some crazy separatist who would creep far far to close.

After a few hours we left the pub to march to the stadium in the rain...chanting and singing the whole time...the pride swelling in my chest. I actually felt as if we were an army marching to conquer an over matched opponent.

Once inside the stadium things really picked up chanting and singing at the top of my lungs I honestly felt that if I screamed and sang just a little louder then Julian would push just that little harder and Gerba would run just a touch faster.

I won't go into details of the match since if your reading this post I assume you have already seen it...but I will say that when Canada scored I felt as if I was flying.

After the match we walked back to club 99 which I will say seeing for the second time it looked like a beacon of hope in a dark world.

We talked to more supporters and had some laughs then my friends and I left to go back to our hotel to freshen up for a night out on the town.

We went to a club called 1234 which just so happened to be where the MNT was having the after party. Which we crashed (thank you facebook) we got to chat up the players which included a funny exchange between a drunk me and DDR

Me: Great game today man

DDR: thank you

Me: should have had 3 though haha

DDR: haha I know

We had a long talk with Andre Hainault and I would like to point out that he is a first class guy. You got the sense talking to him that if he wasn't blessed with the ability to play the game at such a high level he would have been sitting with us shouting his lungs out. We also met his Girlfriend who referred to us all (the supporters section as Ultra's) and she confirmed that all the chants and songs were quite understandable from all around the ground. She is also quite good looking so let me say to Andre "Good on you lad"

Overall I met a lot of the MNT players and it was a near perfect day. near because we let St. Vincent score...><

Cheers

Chris

PS: sorry for the long winded post I get carried away.

I met so many people my head was spinning.

It was funny at the stadium, because everyone was talking and asking what there name on the Voyageur site was......

Make sure your buddies log-on and send Cheeta an e-mail. Our distribution list will be frozen shortly.

Heartwarming! Another fierce fan baptized! Now, let's keep spreading the word and get more lads and lasses out to these games. [it'll be sort of like on big swingers convention, without the stretchmarks and nasty STDs, of course.]

Vive le Canada!

I'm pretty sure the Yukon guy was named "Mike". Does anyone know if he comes on here, by the way?

Yes, it was Mike (it's now Yukon Mike) and he is another lurker. He said he had tried to log-on, but was having trouble.

I'm saving a poster for him, so if he doesn't log-on soon and drop me an e-mail, he will be out of luck.

He went to the U-20's in Edmonton. Said he was going to all the qualifying matches.

Mike was from the Yukon? He introduced himself to me about 1 hour before kick-off when the only people there were my brother and I and him and some other guys I didn't know. Thats dedication

Three days on the bus !!

He made the Julian DeGuzman 2007 Voyageurs Player of the Year Award presentation.

What's even funnier, is he has become something of an urban soccer myth. Right before the award presentation, GM Morgan Quarry came up to me and said, "is it true someone came from the Yukon ?"

And I replied, "he's red, he's white, he's f****n dynamite, Yukon-Mike, Yukon-Mike..........!"

I think that photo was taken seconds before security grabbed him and threatened to throw him out.

The security guy got really pissed at people moving the net. He wasn't a big fan of the spiderman song :)

Mike was right next to me for the duration of the game. Despite my constant reassurances that "it's montreal, no one's gonna ID you" he kept asking me to buy his beers for him (he's underage). Boy was he ever drunk by the end of all that. Also, since he was going sans chemise, I gave him a big slap on the belly when we scored :D

Don't be sorry, it was a great write-up. Welcome aboard and keep doing more of these! We need more stuff like this in the When Saturday Comes style but from a Canuckistani perspective.
