Match Summary:

The Toronto Lady Lynx won their fifth match in a row to open the 2008 season with a victory over the London Gryphons at a cool and damp North London Stadium this evening. The win gives the Lady Lynx a season sweep over the Gryphons and raises Toronto’s record to 5-0-0 (15 points), while London falls to 2-2-0 on the season. Alicia Donaldson and Nicole Markowitz, in her Lady Lynx debut, scored for Toronto in the victory, while Elise Kuhar-Pitters recorded her second victory of the year between the pipes.

London opened strong on their home field and created a couple of chances in the first five minutes, but the Lady Lynx defense held fast and Toronto weathered the storm. Toronto quickly took control of the match and Donaldson opened the scoring in the 11th minute on a brilliant individual effort. She took the ball on the left wing just inside the London half, and dribbled towards goal. The rookie striker beat a number of Gryphon defenders and shot just inside the box, beating the London keeper with a low blast for her team-leading fourth of the year.

London equalized in the 18th minute when Devon Beach was left all alone between two defenders deep in Lady Lynx territory. Jessica Salgado lobbed a deft pass over the Lady Lynx midfield to the London forward, who then volleyed it past Kuhar-Pitters into the Toronto goal. The marker was the first goal conceded on the season by the Lady Lynx, and levelled the match at one-all.

The sloppy pitch slowed play down as the game progressed, and neither team was able to establish themselves following the halftime break. Toronto dominated the possession and spent much of the early part of the second half in London territory, but they were unable to manufacture many scoring chances on the heavy field. The Gryphons had two great chances to score in the 77th minute, but huge saves by Kuhar-Pitters kept the score even. The stops energized the Lady Lynx and three minutes later, Markowitz gave the Lady Lynx back the lead on a breakaway goal. Alyscha Mottershead fed a through ball to the rookie, who took the pass and sprinted past her defender. Markowitz then calmly slammed the ball home for a 2-1 Toronto lead. London pressed forward in the waning moments looking for the equalizer but the Lady Lynx stepped up their defense, led by an outstanding game by Kelsi Landry, and managed to preserve the lead and ice the victory.

Toronto’s road trip continues for three more matches, stopping in Hamilton, Ottawa and Laval before returning home on June 22 against their bitter rivals the Ottawa Fury at 4:00 PM at Varsity Centre. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Lynx ticket hotline at 416-251-4625 x 31, or at the Varsity Centre box office one hour prior to kickoff.
