youllneverwalkalone
Hey, now that we're back, was that incredible or what? In spite of the worst back bass in the history of football, Jules was completely dominating the match for at least 10 minutes there. Klukowski was awesome in all respects, Friend dominant, Serioux amazing with his poise. Considering the chances we generated and the fact that Brasil don't appear to use defenders (which clearly coincide) I'd say a 3-2 defeat is a very acceptable result given the opposition. Johnnyranger
could have easily been 4-3 for Canada if not for a bit of luck or lack of luck depending on who you talk about, De Guzman's left footer into the breadbasket of Cesar... De Rosario's failed chip attempt on the mini breakaway... Those are two clear instances that come to mind right away where we could have had more. Brazil was shocking at the back. Bertuzzi44
I was lucky enough to be there, and I thought Canada played great. Some things that really stuck out for me: 1) I thought Seriuox and Kluka played awesome. Serioux brings more ball skills and mobility to the CB position than a hainalt or McKenna. Probably good seeing as we were playing Brazil, who seem to like to keep the ball on the ground. Deserved props to DM here, i think. 2) De Guzman is a monster. He once again controlled the midfield when we had possession. His goal was class. the backpass was an abberation. 3) Friend also played well IMO. Held up well. Although Caesar screwed up on Friends goal, Rob will always try for balls like that, and at 6'4, that is a good thing. The Supporters section was great. Props again to Massimo for dealing with the tickets. Oh, and how the hell did Issey miss that breakaway?!? Robinho got'er done with basically the same chance... I guess issey is no Robihno
VPjr
wow...it was so crappy not to have the V's board up and running after the game. I am very proud of the players. Onstad was not stellar and Hastings is not a CB but other than that, no complaints and just mounds and mounds of praise. Only word of caution....now everyone else in the world knows we have the talent to compete with a very good Brazil side. No one will be taking Canada lightly. Our players need to bring that same level of intensity to all their games. If they do, this is not a 62nd ranked team. Having watched the US v England and Canada v Brazil, I'm left wondering which national team is better right now (Canada or the Yanks?) I don't want to draw too much from just 1 game but the Americans were really quite bad last Wednesday and Canada should have had, at minimum, a tie from their match with the Brazilians. fengshui
The quality of the pitch looked like it was a big equalizing factor. Just to throw a bit of cold water on the mostly well deserved enthusiasm regarding the Canada performance.
youllneverwalkalone
I would imagine there are much worse pitch conditions in Brasil. Qwest was actually an excellent venue for football and I even give some respect to security for letting us hang our bannners unmolested and letting us have a good time. Other than the guy who threatened to throw piltdownman out until he pretended to be a German tourist.
Footy
A great treat for all the supporters who made the trip down we made a big difference in many ways ... for those who sat in the Voyageurs section remember that dick wana be Yank Brazilian that tried to hang up his Brazilian flag over the Canada Flag ! about 3 rows of supporters stood up and gave the what for ! A good night for our boys and supporters !
marktci
There's a photo gallery on the Seattle PI website with a few V's scarves visible (in particular, in photos 4 and 11). BrennanFan
It was an excellent showing. What a game. No other team in Concacaf can play Brasil like that right now. We are that damn good. Onstad was good, the second goal was preventable though, he couldve done better. We have three good keepers but all three are prone to big mistakes every once in a while. I'd still play HIrschfeld, hope his back heals soon. Did anyone catch that when talking about the keeper situation, neither Dobson nor Forrest even mentioned Hirschfeld's name? Wonder what that was about... Defence did ok. Stalteri was HUMILIATED on the first goal, but otherwise did fine. Serioux was insanely good and has earned himself a spot on that backline. Hastings did ok like always and im fine with him there, but maybe McKenna and Serioux is the way to go, for now. Kluka is our starting Left Back now, no doubt about it. Maybe Brennan can slot in at CB, either way his presence on the bench and his versatility will no doubt prove useful going forward. We have the best midfield in concacaf. i think we lined up like this: ----------deRo Issey----------------Radz ------deGuz--Hutch deRo did well playing centrally, he should stay there. deGuz did well, but couldve done better. If you look at the first goal, he was in no mans land, ball watching instead of tracking back to cover diego. he could have prevented that goal. and that backpass, wtf? he wasnt even under that much pressure at the time. Issey did well, but too many poor crosses. Friend owns the striker position. He was dominant, in addition to goalscoring he showed excellent creativity and playmaking- something we arent going to get from Gerba or Occean. He convinced me. The subs all played well. Nsaliwa is starter material. Bernier is better than he lets on. Against Panama, id like to see this: ----------Gerba Hutch------deRo------Radz -------deGuz--Bernier deJong----JB-Serioux----Paul ----------Sutton Oh yea, and the V's definitely represented. Banners and a clear supporters group could easily be seen on the Sportsnet telecast.
tmcmurph
quote:Originally posted by Johnnyranger Brazil was shocking at the back. It has always been their Achillies heal. We are as ready as we are going to be! Bring on StV&G!!! I'm sure the other powers in the region were watching a bit in awe and a lot of "we have got to cover that guy"! The Ref
Is it me or is Stalteri's contributions to the whole team a big lagging. Do we have somebody else who can fill his position better. Are his days now counting down?
N-A
Great game having read the reports online. Would have been greater if we would have won or draw. I take a 3:2 loss as not a bad result overall. Heres to the WC games against St Vincent.
El Hombre
quote:Originally posted by BrennanFan Onstad was good, the second goal was preventable though, he couldve done better. I actually thought Onstad played pretty poorly (and from some of the close-ups on TV, it looked like he thought the same - seemed frustrated with himself). He should've been closer on the first goal, the second was decent reflexes but one hopes that those are palmed over the net and I was hoping he'd put up more of a fight on the third as Robinho rounded him a bit too easily. No way do I expect him to stop all 3 but a little more solid performance and the game goes Canada's way. There was also the the 4th goal that was scored that got called back on the offside. He's a loyal soldier and he was pretty good during the Gold Cup, but I think this performance knocks him down a few rungs in my mind.

I've ripped Stalteri a lot lately, but other than the first goal he was very solid, particularly his passing. Klukowski was the MOTM in my opinion, but I think we need to keep in mind the quality of the opposition coming forward and say the the backline as a whole was very good. I also disagree that Onstad was at fault on the second goal. That header was a bullet. He did well to get a touch on it at all.
BearcatSA
Glad to hear that Serioux had a strong game (won't be able to see my recording of this match until the weekend). I thought he did well vs CR in Toronto last September and with this match hopefully he can keep the positive mojo going into WCQ.
forthegoodofthegame
I thought all the boys played really well except for two people. Hastings should have stepped up sooner on the first goal and his starting position on the second goal caused his man to beat him to the ball. And I didn't think Stalteri contributed much either.. got burned on the first goal and just wasn't very effective for a captain.
villus
What a game. We really played with them, I was so proud of how they played putting on a show, playing with confidence and style and really living up to the potential everyone on this board sees in our MNT. -Friend is our Striker enough said, he has great playmaking abilities is strong in the air and has good touch as well as clicking really well with all our offence players. -Serioux played great, has good skills and is powerful, if he can keep his compusure I think he is in the top 3 of our CB's depending on the opposition I think he starts -Deguz played amazing except for the backpass which was bad -Issey too many wasted crosses -Kluka played great, first time I've seen him show his real quality -Stalteri looks shaky at the back, players with a little pace and skill seem to eat him alive -I don't think Pat should have gotten the nod, and I don't think he should be the go to guy in WCQ, I think its time for Sutton or Hirschfield, Pat had his time and has always been there when we need him but the younger guys should be given the chance to step up now. -When the Guz came out we looked very different, no doubt he is the heart and soul of this team, without him I think we are half the team that we are with him out there. Makes me sad that we could'nt have 2 Deguzmans patrolling out there, but enough of that Julian is so so important to us its inconceivable seeing Canada without him. -Did'nt see much from Radz or Julian, nothing bad nothing great either -Bernier and Tam looked good for their short period of time out there -The real test will be if we can carry our form and play well against Panama, if we play well in that game I think it will show if this team is really ready to Beat out Honduras and Jamaica for the HEX. Gian-Luca
Stalteri was fine. Yeah, he got burned on the first goal but probably every player on our team would have well with that move by Robinho, and I doubt we'll be seeing much of that from Concacaf opposition. What's more of a concern to me was the lack of closing down on Diego on that goal, he was wide open and had all day to pick his spots. Not sure why we are blaming Onstad for that goal under the circumstances. Going forward we do need to tighten up at the back, and I wonder about trying Brennan at CB rather than making one of he or Klukowski sit. And we've got Jazic & De Jong as cover at LB. Obviously an encouraging performance from Canada, the only frustrating thing was we could have won that. We've all mentioned the bad back pass and the miss by Issey, how about that play a minute after Julian's goal where the ball sits perfectly for DeRo to smash it in from the centre of the goal from about 20 yards out but the f'ing turf gives way underneath him and he slips on the shot instead. Aaarggghhhh!!!!!
Winnipeg Fury
The V's did a great job with the banners. We owned the one end. Who has the banner's and are they on the way to Montreal for June 20 ?
Gordon
This game went a longway towards alleviating my concerns about Mitchell. At least, as far as his abiliy to get the team playing attractive soccer.
