Second National Stadium

Any way to get a winter "tunnel" between the change rooms and the bubble? That's how it's done in Catalogna's complex in MTL.

Not where the stadium currently sits. The change rooms are all under the west (main) grandstand, which sits fairly close to quite a few buildings.

The only space for an extra field is in the south and east parking lots, which would mean tunnels of at least 200 metres on either direction, snaking either through the stadium or around its circumference.

The idea of renovating Lamport with new artificial turf and replacing it with grass at BMO is pretty intriguing. And it's a bit of a win-win for the city and MLSE. We get the surface needed to attract and keep top-quality talent, and the city gets a recreational facility with new turf.

Lamport just did get a new fieldturf installation completed. Mo more crappy, torn up astro turf at Lamport.

That is great. Now can Lamport use the bubble from BMO? If it can be re-used at Lamport put in the grass now at BMO and have the 2008 season on the real stuff.

This discussion is somewhat moot. The Canadian National Team has always been very poorly supported in all parts of Canada. The only place that has been solid has been Edmonton, but even with 30 000 people there(like in the U20 World Cup), it seems cavernous.

The rest of the country is so quick to sump on everyone else, but we can't seem to realize that the MNT is just poorly supported. These illusions of grandeur... 30 000 in Vancouver, 18 000 in Montreal, or any amount anywhere are too much for me.

All you have to do is look at Toronto for the Costa Rica game(what was the official attendance?). We all talk big, but when push comes to shove, there is just no support in the major cities. Blame the CSA all you want, but we can't ignore the truth of the numbers.

I am sorry to say, but it is true. There is almost no coverage for the National Games. I mean, should there not be coverage on the news about upcoming matches. Unless you look at these forums or follow the FiFa schedule it's pretty hard for someone who is not in contact with the sport to know there will be a game.

I do believe CSA is to blame for that, especially the marketing section of it.

I never heard of the Costa Rica Game until I saw the results online.

We need better coverage. And that is why BMO and TFC was such a success, People new about it!!!

You are correct. There is no other city that is even worthy of comparrison at this point. The fact is that there have been dozens of national team games in Edmonton over the past 15 years, and generally all have had solid support and are pro-Canadian to boot, regardless of whether it's the U-19 girls or senior men.

PS- I'm not from Edmonton.

Really?! When did they do this? The last time I was at Lamport was October 2007 and the...

Oh hold on a second. It's all falling into place, now. A couple weeks back I was at Shoeless Joe's on King/Dufferin and thought I saw rolls of turf covered in tarp just outside the stadium. I actully did think that they were resurfacing, but I dismissed the idea because I figured it would have been too cold to do the construction work so far into winter.

But now it makes perfect sense. :D

Bingo! We have a winner. MARKETING. If people have to find out about things like MNT games on forums then get some better ideas & people to do the job right!

By the way Edmonton has done a good job supporting the games that were there. The U20 had some games poorly attended because they were scheduled at the same time as other major events in the city. Most drew respectable crowds.

PS. I'm from Calgary so admitting that Edmonton does anything well takes a lot of effort [8D]

The biggest draw back for the Canada games in Edmonton at the World U20 was that they were scheduled at 5:00 PM to appeal Eastern Canada.

Well, only one was. The congo game was on sunday afternoon.

You people out west (Not you Vancouver) sure think highly of your support of the game. What's your club soccer team called again? I don't care about scheduling excuses. I don't even care about the rampant regionalism on this thread. I want what's best for the countries game. I believe that involves a strong support of our national team on real grass in a National stadium or two for seasonal climate reasons. Enough of this Commonwealth HAD good support in the past. It was dire during the U20's and you have no club soccer to speak of. If you had a team as strong as TFC and the bollocks to call it a SSS then I will gladly concede and save my money for the journey to Gretzky's town. I'm glad you like soccer there. Now get a team so we can be real rivals in this issue.

Your timing is bang on. I don't know if the installation is actually completed yet or if they are waiting for a thaw but the old green carpet (and all its torn up sections) is gonzo for 2008 and Lamport will apparently host a fair share of CSL games.

It is funny how TFC has brainwashed the minds of people in Toronto and made them forget recent history. Your city's record of supporting soccer was not a good one prior to TFC. Yet you have the balls to come on here and rip Edmonton cause they don't have a club. Hell, you didn't have a legitamate club 1 year ago. Look at the size of their city dickwad! If T-O is so damn hot, how do you explain the crowd at the Canada vs Costa Rica game? You can't! Don't blame it on marketing cause the CSA has done the same measly advertising for years. I would bet my mortgage that Edmonton would have done better.

And just to clarify, TO had 19,500 for the U-20 against Chile (and there were thousands of Chilean fans).

Edmonton had 31,579 for Austria and 32,508 for Congo. Those were all Canadian fans.

Sorry, but when it comes to the national team, TO should be the last city to brag.

They probably would have had 50,000 fans on the July 1st game if the CSA had not bailed on the original Canada opener location.

Ahh, so my comments have brought out the more liguistically gifted among you. Perfect. I wanted to promote consistency for future MNT game sites. Even conceded that Vancouver is the best option for winter dates to utilze the entire FIFA international calendar thereby promoting the game and improving the team chemistry. Then it always has to degrade to " This where I live and this why the MNT should play here". I'm not an apologist for my city. I want whats best for OUR team and it deserves and could achieve more attention then the once or twice a year its getting. Yeah there's new fans here. I hope there's new fans every where this year and years to come. It's my frustrated take on the direction of what I consider to be a continually squandered potential. Lastly let me reiterate I want what's best. i want to go to the CMNT games and FEEL when I walk in the ground that this is where my nation comes to play soccer against the rest of the world. That can't be Commonwealth, or Olympic Stadium or bloody Rogers Centre.

If one wants to discuss "Dire" attendance at the U-20 please explain the <12,000 who (partially) filled BMO for New Zealand - Gambia. Of course I am being facetious. That wasn't dire at all. No rational person would even suggest that even if the stadium was only 60% full because it was still better than that game would have drawn almost anywhere else in the world, except New Zealand or Gambia. In fact, attendance was fabulous at all 6 venues and the record set would have been even greater were their a larger venues in Vancouver/Burnaby and Toronto. I find this bashing of any venue a bit tiresome. Toronto is Toronto and at every Canada game it is going to sound like an away game because the 3-5K fans who attend to support the old country are going to be singing and chanting and drumming and dancing and making more noise than the 13-16K Canadian fans. And in Edmonton, unless there are 50K fans in the Stadium, we are going to hear about how "poor" the support is because the stadium "looks" empty.

Just curious, how many matches have you attended at Commonwealth ?

FYR, please, STFU.

One of the downfalls of TFC's success is uninformed loudmouths such as yourself lecturing the rest of the country on how ****ty they are at supporting soccer.

It's all well and good that TFC is creating a buzz in Southern Ontario, and as a fan I could not ask for anything more (well, except for maybe a more competent GM), but for all of the new found soccer fans that have crawled out of the woodwork over the past year here I ask, "where the hell were you guys 2 years ago? 10 years ago?"

When the Lynx were struggling to draw crowds equalling that of our upcoming roadtrip to Columbus, Canadian soccer was being supported by others across the country.

We here in the GTA have done NOTHING to be cocky about when it comes to national team support. I was pleased by the number of hardcore supporters that turned up at the Costa Rica game, and it's a start, but FFS let's not look down our noses at everyone else simply because we struck gold at the club level.

STFU? I'll be hard pressed to improve my standing with you that way. Perhaps my phrasing was unrefined but you must agree the topic inspires strong feelings from us all. Let me come at this from a different angle. It appears the largest attendance for CMNT games is at Commonwealth, agreed? Fine then call it National stadium when the team plays there and make it the only place they play till it snows. I still ask if its possible to have a stadium in Vancouver for at least winter dates.

As 2, 5, 10 yrs ago I was in the woodwork like you said. Now I'm looking forward to going to all the Lynx games at Varsity. i hope you'll permit me to attend and cheer loudly.
