Second National Stadium

Recommended Posts

I've really been disappointed with Commonwealth and I hope we do not have a game there for awhile.

BMO has potential, but CSA needs to encourage a more TFC like atmosphere. Personally, I think if they let the Voyageurs somehow work on filling the South End with supporters instead of making it half soccer families and half supporters, then I think it will be different next time around.

I would love it if they made the Mexicans play out on the Rock in Late October or November. We should use our geography to our advantage in times like that :)

Below are the stadiums cropping up in MLS. TFC, whom is already the class of MLS in terms of fan support and wealthy ownership, isn't going to remain in a second rate grassless BMO for long. They will either expand and upgrade, or move. Then we'll have our true NSS.

Nice pictures unfortunately all those stadiums STILL don't exist and till then BMO is only SSS and RBNY,DCU and RSL are still playing on NFL/MLB stadiums.

BTW Next WC2010 might be played on turf since FIFA is not happy with grass quolity in SA.

Tuesday, 12 February 2008

FIFA top dog Sepp Blatter has said the 2010 World Cup in South Africa could be played on artificial grass pitches.

"We have envisaged, though it's not yet a final decision, that the 2010 World Cup could be played on artificial turf," Blatter told BBC Sport.

"An artificial pitch gives you the same conditions during the whole year," said Blatter, who expressed his concern over the quality of the 2008 Nations Cup pitches.

RSL's stadium is almost finished and will be opening in September of this year. NYRB's stadium will follow a year later.

God I hope the players voice a loud opinion on this one via their players' union/association. If you can't even grow grass in Africa I think you should forfeit the World Cup.

I mean the yanks had grass in the Pontiac Silverdome for their world cup didn't they?

Aye carumba. :(

Ideally, You get yourself these following stadium:

Vancouver when built: 30 000 seats when expended

It has the potential to be the nicest stadium in Canada. Only if the deals get threw. I don't see why Asian team's could not host friendly there with the Whitecaps or the National team at any time of the year. What we need is more exposure.

Saputo: 18 000 seats when expended.

Until it is expended to its full size, I don't really see the appeal of having a summer match there, instead bring the match to BMO. I do think it is somewhat small for big soccer venues. Yet I must say that National games are not very well attended, about 11 000 people went to the last Canada Jamaica game in Montreal, but there was a good support at the U20.

BMO Field: 30 000 seats when expended.

I really wonder how long it will take for it to be expended to its larger self. Ha! I bet it will be expended to 30000 seats before the Vancouver waterfront stadium is even in construction!

I have never been to BMO. But it looks awesome. Man I never though I would ever say this in my life, but I wish I lived in Toronto just to be part of the soccer frenzy, and support TFC.

Commonwealth: 60 081

The stadium is great! If you ever happen to be there for a Stampedes Eskimos game when every seat is taken, the crowd is cheering non stop and you have the beautiful prairies sky closing on to the Saskatchewan River and Downtown. It is something everyone should do. Just as much as going to Centre Bell for a Leaf vs Canadien game.

The thing is, people in Edmonton wont go see any soccer match. Just like in Montreal.

God, for the U20 there where 25 000 Mexican flags in the Olympique stadium. Or 30 000 Chili flags for their games or .....

If you want people to turn up don't set up a friendly with Jamaica or South Africa. Set a friendly with a country at a place in witch there are a lot of minorities from that region of the world.

For example: If you make a friendly with Ukraine, Edmonton is your best bet.

Japan and Korea to Vancouver

China pretty much anywhere

Middle east countries to Edmonton, Toronto, or Montreal

Haiti, Belgium, France, Tunisia, Egypt, to Montreal

Australia, England, Italia, and the big names, to almost anywhere, but preferably the largest stadium.

What De Rosario said is thrue. The national team should be playing big country's if it ever want's to improve at that level. If we have friendly with a country that is ranked 100th in the Cola Ranking we wont be improving much. I don't care if our player's loose badly a bunch of games, but I believe there would be a great improvement after a while.

But you wont have a friendly with England or big name country's until you get decent sized stadium's, and that is why any improvement in that field is worth it.

There have literally been dozens of national team games at Commonwealth over the past 15 years. Games at every level for Canada. The vast majority have been extremely well attended and completely pro Canadian.

Commonwealth is a great venue for a major exhibition like Brazil. But the last few games have had some pretty terrible attendance records.

9600 for the last WCQ game against Honduras in 2004, and not much better at the U-20's.

There is a lot of bad blood between local Edmonton organizing folks and the tools at the CSA, which is part of the reason for the poor U20 showing.

I would bet that the Edmonton attendance was still better than any other home game in that WCQ semifinal round.

I was also under the impression that they intend to install fieldturf in the new Vancouver venue.

not sure where you heard this, it has always been emphatically said that the field would be natural grass

6600 square yards (110x60) of grass to keep growing in winter with the lid on BMO field. 6600 sq-yrd = 59400 sq-ft

How about LED grow lights for 8 hours a night?

These are some rough numbers I've pulled up.

Number of Lights needed for each 4 square feet is 2 full spectrum lights. So about 30,000 full spectrum LED grow lights. At $50 each it would cost $1.5 million for just the lights. Add in mounts and setting it up every night it would be over $2 million initially with ongoing storage and maintenance of about $500,000 a year. The energy is only 6 watts per light so that is negligible.

What about "big roll" sod it in the spring and use it all spring, summer and fall then take the sod out pull up the plastic and use the Fieldturf for winter? Sod at $1 per square foot would be $60,000 for the sod plus installation and the covering of the Fieldturf. So lets say $200,000 a year.

Just some ideas, guesses and assumptions on my part but I would say it is doable, especially the big roll sod in the spring.

Anyone else have any ideas or info on growing grass indoors? I know Arizona has the grass grown outside and then moved inside for games like the Superbowl.

Or... you know, put a fielturf field next to the stadium (for $1m or whatever) and put a bubble over that. Crazy that that never seemed to be in the plans. Is there NO place?

Not if you want the bubble attached to the change room facilities under the main grandstand.

The idea of renovating Lamport with new artificial turf and replacing it with grass at BMO is pretty intriguing. And it's a bit of a win-win for the city and MLSE. We get the surface needed to attract and keep top-quality talent, and the city gets a recreational facility with new turf.

Any way to get a winter "tunnel" between the change rooms and the bubble? That's how it's done in Catalogna's complex in MTL.
