Toronto MB
Does nobody else find it weird that Esatdio Nacional Rod Carew is a baseball stadium with really no ability to be converted into a proper football pitch. Estadio Nacional Rod Carew: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/650648 If my memory serves me correctly, I remember us playing at Estadio Rommel Fernandez the last few times we've played down there, and yes, its always looked intimidating. Estadio Rommel Fernandez: http://www.fepafut.com/estructuras.asp Could this be a typo? I don't really see them converting that baseball facility for a friendly. Who knows. Toronto MB
Wow. Looks like something we would try and pull in Canada. I wonder why they dont want to use Rommel Fernandez. At least this keeps the water bombbs at a distance. Nothing like watching being in the front row....a 100 yards away. I don't see this helping the prosepct of TV coverage either. Third tier Hospitalet plays out of one of the baseball facilities from the 1992 Olympics, works fine though seating is a bit odd. The main grandstand curves around one corner. Trillium
Looks like any game played in the baseball stadia wont really give a team any sense of place or pressure, your just to far from the fans, and they from you to make it a worthy event. Which of course ... tells us why the game may well have been booked, a game for Panama at home ... what is the CSA getting as performance money ? I cant imagine any Canadian fans ..bothering to travel to watch the game in such a stadia.. which is eerily simalar to the SVG situation, with a game scheduled in a cricket oval.. the precursor to the baseball stadium ..they are playing in in Panama. Playing in a cricket oval can actually look pretty good, especially compared to that vomit-inducing configuration of the baseball stadium. Here's some shots of Westpac Stadium, a cricket oval in New Zealand, which is used for football by Wellington Phoenix FC. It's also used for rugby. It even looks natural when there's a sizeable crowd.
SthMelbRed
Playing in a cricket stadium is no worse than playing in a stadium with a running track. In fact, I find it better, as instead of the unattractive look of the track, the space is filled with grass in an oval. Here in Melbourne, the Victory play their home matches at Telstra Dome which is a cricket/Aussie rules stadium while the Socceroos play many of their home matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. ob1
I can attest to west pac as I did go to most “nix” games. For a first year team the fan support in Wellington was great (population of around 350K) and average attendance of 10K and the atmosphere was amazing. It’s all about the fans and energy they bring While nothing beats sitting as close as possible to the action, it’s not as if your so far away you forgot why came. Wow i didn't realize there was an actual phoenix fan on these boards! I've actually been following them via yellow fever since well before the season started, hence why I used the example. Hopefully they make a real run at the playoffs next year!
ob1
I think it’s going to take a few years, but that’s ok as long as they play well and try to get better, witch they are doing. Probable sacrificing a bit on the defense for some offence, but it was a great first season with lots of goals. they got a couple of quick Brazilians on the team that can really put on a show and the second leading goal scorer in Smeltz So what made you follow the phoenix from Calgary? Martyr
Using baseball stadiums for soccer is not really that unusual in North America. Many of the original NASL and pre-NASL teams used played at places like Comisky Park, Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium. Didn't Rochester Rhinos do it before their ill-fated move to Paetec Park? I think the major oddity here is that they are playing the game in the outfield instead of closer to the stands over the infield. I can see why since the surface should be much better. But tickets must be dirt cheap to compensate for being so far from the action... or you get complimentary binoculars!

When Australia left the OFC, leaving New Zealand as the "big dog" in the confederation I started being interested in NZ football, and following the 'nix came naturally since it's the only pro club and most of their nats play there. I also went to the NZ-Mexico game at U-20s, where Jack Pelter scored that late goal. Pretty entertaining match actually.

The Ref
Mitchell is being provided with the right games, good opponents, good venues, etc. all to prepare his team for qualification. If he screws up qualification, I will be very upset and will be condemning his coaching.

A squad of B or C teamers take the slow boat to some two-bit Caribbean host, followed by a game against a Danish club side in its off-season. Where are the right games, the good opponents, the good venues (mind-boggling statement that one)!!

The glass is half full. I will repeat what I said in another thread about this subject. People are complaining our team played Martinique and Vejle but int he end we should look at the result more than the opponent. 1-0 and 2-0 wins are usually and indication that the game was close and that it wasn't an easy walk in the park for our players that were called. Also, like you just pointed out, we've played with our A squad against Iceland, SA and CR and will do again against Panama and Estonia. Considering the number of FIFA dates between August 2007 and June 2008, I think Mitchell will have been presented with decent preparation to evaluate his players. The only negative would be the roster for the January camp who looked weaker than what we saw for the same camp in the last few years but maybe it's an indication of some of our players getting in better situation in Europe (see guys like Rob Friend, Patrice Bernier and Olivier Occean).
